Wizards dare Nocioni to beat them again
April 26, 2005
BY LACY J. BANKS Staff Reporter
WASHINGTON -- For the record, Andres Nocioni's birthday isn't until Nov. 30, but the Washington Wizards weren't being literal Monday when they wished the Bulls rookie birthday greetings.
On a playground, the talk emanating from the MCI Center after practice would be translated as, "Enjoy your career night, Andres, because it's not going to be that easy the next time.''
Nocioni scored 25 points and grabbed 18 rebounds Sunday at the United Center as the Bulls beat the Wizards 103-94 in Game 1 of their first-round series.
Game 2 is Wednesday, and Wizards forward Antawn Jamison basically dared Nocioni to do it again.
''Happy birthday,'' Jamison said. ''That's all I've got to say. Happy birthday. It was a present [from the Wizards].
''We're going to keep making him beat us. If he can [keep] doing that, I'll give it to him. Hey, he was feeling it. He was yelling and clapping and rebounding and shooting shots. I applaud him. But happy birthday.
''It was just one game. We had two main guys who did not play well [Jamison and Gilbert Arenas], and we are anxious to get back on the court and get that bad taste out of our mouths.''
Arenas admitted he inadvertently fired up Nocioni by implying he was a dirty player.
''He got a comment that fired him up, and he's ready to go,'' Arenas said. ''And he showed. If he plays like that the whole series, then congratulations.''
Wizards forward Kwame Brown is expected to play Wednesday after an MRI revealed a bruised right knee, suffered when Nocioni fell into Brown in Game 1. Brown left practice with a slight limp.
Arenas offered a plan to slow down Nocioni.
''You throw one of your wolves [at him], put an active guy on him,'' Arenas said. ''Unfortunately, Michael Ruffin is hurting. But if you throw an active Ruffin on him, you'll have two active guys going at it.''
Arenas said Nocioni did well simply because he was an active guy. But Arenas said it takes more than one game to make or break a best-of-seven series.
''I was always taught that it's easy to play one good game or one bad game,'' Arenas said. ''But that's why it's a seven-game series. And you see what you get from there.
''Can me and [Jamison] have a bad game all series while their young guys have seven good games? Anybody can have one good game and one bad game.''

Sound familiar? Now was that you or was it not? Forgive me if I didn't follow that entire thread to hear you say, "JUST KIDDIN' FELLAS, I JUST WANTED SOME ATTENTION".

Obviously, you're the one with the lack of reading comprehension. What was disrespectful in that article? That they wished him a happy birthday or that they stated the fact that they didn't believe a guy who averaged 8 and 6 ALL season long was going to consistantly go for 25 and 18 in the playoffs? Please, keep your garbage comments and articles to yourself.
Oh yeah, **** you too.

Um...I'm really kind of failing to see the disrespect here. All they are saying is that if he keeps playing the way he is and beats them then more power to him but it won't be easy next time. If that kind of comment gets you riled up then I dunno what to tell you heh.

You ask anyone who posts on this Wizards board and they'll tell you I am not a blind homer when it comes to the Wizards. I'll be the first to say something negative about them or point something they did wrong out. You must have done a bang up job on your Bull's website if you have to come here and try and antagonize people on a Wizard's board.
Thats right, you did have one little comment and you tried to blow the article out of proportion.
And don't ever call me dude again.

There aren't any quotes in this article that are disrespectful....lets see two of our big three have really bad nights and Nocinio has a career night, stuff like that happens but certainly not every night of the series......
CrazyZeb
April-26th-2005, 09:55 AM
Alright, back to the topic... hopefully. I believe it was disrespectful in the way they said Happy Birthday, as if Nocioni's game and the win wasn't earned but merely a present from the Wizards.
If you don't agree with me, that's perfectly fine. Do it like Isifhan and Funkyalligator did, there's no need to attack me because I posted an opinion.

Please. You are really reaching Zeb. They feel that they let Nocioni outwork them. It's truth. it doesn't take away from what he did, but the fact is if they had played just as hard he wouldn't have had Shaq like numbers. To deny the obvious is to bask in the ignorance and bliss of ones own oblivious fandom.
Do you really feel that Nocioni's game was all Nocioni, that he was simply unstoppable because of his incredible skill and size, or was it maybe the fact that the Wizards weren't hustling after loose balls, was it may be the fact that Jamison wasn't bodying up on him and Jeffries wasn't outhustling him?
But like the Wizards said, if he can do that all series then congratulations, because it will mean he's the real deal. A superstar, a 15 15 waiting to happen every night.

Yes, definitely, but that's the point. He out worked them. It's easy to say if they just work harder... we've been saying that about our own Eddy Curry for years. Even Shaq himself said if he would just work harder and be more aggresive he would be one of the best in the game... so far it obviously hasn't happened. Arenas has more talent in his pinky than Nocioni does in his whole body, but does he have the heart.... we'll find out soon.
You feel I'm reaching, that's ok, but I'm not the only one. I know I know, stupid Bulls fans.

Haha. Well we'll see. I'm going to be very dissapointed if the Wizards come out flat and lose game 2. If you all win game 2 it's not over, but it almost is. Right now you're the better team, you've bought into the coach's philosophy and your coach knows what he's doing.
For the Wiz to win they need the bigs to get your frontline in foul trouble and outhustle Nocioni. I don't loathe the guy like some, I was laughing(in an annoyed manner) at his exagerrated flopping the other night.
I just feel its less disrespect and more them venting their frustration that they let one slip away that they easily could have had. It's like that crazy dude in the playground you play that you know you're better than but he's just crazy and he gets in your head. That's Nocioni.

Nocioni talked his guff and backed it up NICELY. The kid still hustles more than any Wizard, so I doubt he's too intimidated.

As far as the article Zeb.... This is the Chicago Sun. Of course they're going to write the article to get their team fired up.
Nonetheless, it was an unneeded quote when we've given them enough ammo as it is. It's not like we're the friggin Heat or Pistons here people....what business do we have calling guys out. Especially ones that just outhearted, outhustled, and flat outplayed us.

Zeb, obviously you've never played organized sports before, because "Happy Birthday" after someone had a big game or made a lucky play is the softest smack you can talk. This is something I'd hear in 6th grade basketball. This is the playoffs. They're calling out the other team and trying to get under their skin. They want Nocioni to get fired up and try to do too much to show them off. If Nocioni goes off again, then good for him. If he doesn't, he could hurt the team by trying to do too much. They're telling the Bulls that the only way they'll beat us is for one of their role players to have a monster game. There's nothing disrespectful about it, they're trying to bring some fire to the series, it's the playoffs!

Isn't "smack talk" in essence being disrespectful? As I said, this isn't about me personally (yes, I played organized sports), I found this article elsewhere and there's many posts that agree. Trust me, if this "smack talk" was said about one of your players, you wouldn't like it either. What if the Cowboys, after our one win the other year, said Happy Birthday. Just thinking of that annoys me way more than this story. I didn't go so far as to call this "bulletin board material," but no one wants to hear that they won because someone else let them.
Edit: By the way, he's not saying it to him, but to the press. I think there's a difference.

Although the statements didn't have the intention of being disrespectful, it is still not very smart to make any comments to the media that could be used by the Bulls to hype them up anymore. This is the playoffs and the Wiz are newcomers and cannot afford to give the Bulls any additional fuel for the fire.
Unfortunately, I expect Nocioni will put up solid numbers for the rest of the series due to the fact that he is the type of hustle player that typically gives the Wiz fits.

The injury may prove to continue his totally bad luck. Personally, I think being in the playoffs is exactly what Kwame needs and craves. I'm sure he went into the league thinking "BIG STAGE" what with MJ in the picture and Kwame's own naivity playing on him. Well, he's been hand-tied, scolded and re-taught for 3 years and NOW he gets to play on national tv in games that mean something for NBA history. It may sound funny, but I bet that's what an immature kid like Brown could really get into and that's a GOOD thing for him and for us. Just too bad about the injury.
Play through it Kwame. This town would do an about-face on the way they treat you if you shine now. Game three will be a good welcome home.

Right before he leaves town? ;) Kwame has that extra incentive... money.

Kwame's heart isn't in the game of basketball. You can see it when he plays.
Until that changes, he'll always be the Kwame we've grown to see.

I know most dont like to expect much from him but I believe this is where he will shine. I expect him to play tomarrow and perform well again.
His going him welcome will heal his soul. I expect a very nice game from him when we return. Hopefully our fans realize, this isnt the regular season anymore. There should be NO. I mean NOOOO booing of Kwame or any other Wiz player for that matter during the playoffs. This is the time for support, not booing.

Everything is open still. EG has been consistant in saying he wants to resign him. I have said it many times. Kwame can make his future with these few games.
If the he plays well and the crowd is cheering him, all beats are on again. He very well may stay. Once he hears the cheers, he will understand why thier were boos.
It was partly his fault. They want to cheer him here. He just has to show up and do it.
