View Full Version : The Growing Chip on Taylor's Shoulder

(Caveat: I am a fan who has already bailed on Sean Taylor because he's been charged with a felony. I am familiar with just a few tidbits of his off field behavior and my radiation detector is, frankly, pegged.)
Fans have turned on this guy. The poll I posted runs ten to one that Taylor is dumber than Kellen Winslow... that's saying something. I am going to predict that unless he really does a graceful move... a REALLY graceful move then he's done with fans in DC now. This is much worse than anything Michael Westbrook did. It's just that Mike didn't produce on the field which ran him out of town.
I think Taylor's production will ultimately end up suffering because here is a young man with an obvious chip on his shoulder who has the brain of Kwame Brown. He's already media shy according to Portis, so I put a 70% chance that his career in Washington will be strangled in the crib. The fans here are brutal, as brutal as Philly when it comes to protecting Joe Gibbs. Taylor is just another grasshopper on the windscreen.
There are commandments you just don't break and Taylor has broken a key one in flouting Joe Gibbs.
Perhaps if he comes out and has a pro bowl year this will blow over, but I get the feeling this guy is spiraling down hard and will buy the farm. Everything that is good about this organization is aligned against him now, the fans, the coaches, the owners, his own teammates. It's very sad.

Joe and Sean talked. Maybe everyone will climb back down the ladder of frustration and get on with football.

I haven't heard the team or Gibbs give up on him, some fans maybe, but that will blow over when he starts making plays. We know we don't have the whole story here, so why jump to conclusions. This has the potential to blow his world apart, lets hope its nothing more than a dose of reality which sends him in a positive rather than the negative direction you are predicting.

The real question is what if it really is as bad as it seems with Sean? With all that talent do we let him go or do we risk pulling the team apart with the special treatment that he would surely require? He has already proven that he has the judgment of a crack ho. I agree he is an amazing talent but at what cost? And do we risk him maybe going to a Division rival?

Assuming he gets his legal situaion under control, what Taylor does in the coming weeks and months will determine his future. If he shows up ready to participate in training camp and has a good camp I think that will be a step in the right direction. Taylor needs to get his head on straight, listen to the coaching staff and earn the respect of his teammates back. Taylor also needs to become a model citizen. Not D. Green clean, but he needs to show he is serious about staying out of trouble.
Lastly, he needs to refocus. He lost his focus this spring and he needs to get it back.

I find it interesting that people are ready to give up on someone who hasn't even been indicted yet, let alone convicted.
Do I like that he's gotten himself into this situation? No. But I'm not ready to give up on him yet. Let's be honest. As some others have pointed out, the lion's share of the disapointment with Taylor comes from him not showing up to camp, not the arrest.

I can't believe it. After searching this forum for 2 hours trying to find a thread where I could give my opinion on Sean Taylor, I forgot what I was gonna say!!!!!

and this!!! http://extremeskins.com/CrazyZeb/We...HI03_Taylor.mpg
honestly i could have pulled a lot more clips but i think these will serve my point that people will forgive him when he is doing things like this on the field. Look at Ray Lewis.

HE'S A SAFETY!!!
I give him props for being a good safety but, in the end, he's just a safety. Matt Bowen was in route to a career season before he got hurt. If he has recovered, and Taylor can't play, the Skins won't miss a beat.
When linemen loose a step, they can move to another position on the line.
When CBs loose a step, they can move to Nickle, Dime or safety.
When safeties slow down where do they go? Fishing.
Why did the Bucks release one of the best safeties in the league? Because they're easily replaceable. If you're a safety and you plan to hold out for more money, do yourself a favor and buy a plasma TV 'cause its gonna be a long wait.

While I do see your point about safeties, it doesn't apply to Sean Taylor, IMO. Is Ed Reed easily replaceable? Was Ronnie Lott easily replaceable? No, I don't believe so. Nor will be Sean Taylor. One need only read a few comments by Gregg Williams (a man revered less only than God and Joe Gibbs himself around here) to understand just how great a player Sean Taylor will be. Not just great as safeties go; great amongst all defensive players.
I'm guessing your comment about the "Bucks" releasing a great safety is about John Lynch; IMO, he is incredibly overrated based on his ability to lay big hits, not unlike one Roy Williams. Sean Taylor is a multi-dimensional safety who will excel against pass and run, while still laying the big hits and making the big play. Whether you view FS as an important position or not (I think most defensive coaches would disagree with you, by the way, as would I) Sean Taylor is more than just your average safety. He is a gamechanger and a human highlight film with the kind of talent that most players like John Lynch can only dream of.

That's like saying Ronnie Lott was "just a safety".
Guys like Sean Taylor change games out there.
I really think the events of this offseason will just end up being a footnote in his career. People have been making a bigger deal of his non-attendence than it really warrents. If this whole gun charge blows over (which I'm pretty sure now it will), things will be business as usual.
