Taylor speaks with Gibbs about arrest
By Jody Foldesy
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
http://www.washingtontimes.com/functions/print.php?StoryID=20050610-123205-3191r
Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has broken his long silence with coach Joe Gibbs.
In a conversation apparently initiated by his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, Taylor spoke to Gibbs on Wednesday about recently being arrested and charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.
It was the first time Taylor spoke to his coach all offseason. The fifth pick overall in the 2004 draft not only had been the only Redskin boycotting the offseason workout program, he also had not been returning Gibbs' phone calls to explain why.
Gibbs didn't reveal much about the conversation but did say he called after Rosenhaus suggested Taylor was ready to talk. The coach added he was glad to have spoken to Taylor, who explained his side of last week's much publicized incident.
"I think the best way for me to phrase it is, we had a good talk," Gibbs said. "I feel good about the talk. And we've just got to work our way through this."
Taylor is scheduled to be arraigned June 24 for a June 1 incident in which police say he pulled a gun on two people he believed stole his ATVs. Taylor reportedly then physically assaulted one of the victims while an associate wielded a baseball bat and chased the other.
Police continue to investigate a second phase of the incident in which shots were fired at Taylor in retaliation. No developments have been made public on that front.
Team loses 2 OTAs
The NFL and NFL Players Association levied a surprisingly harsh punishment for the Redskins' recent violation of "organized team activity" rules, stripping Washington of two of its three remaining OTAs.
The club had been scheduled to resume OTAs Monday, practice through Wednesday and hold minicamp at the end of the week. Now, no players are allowed at Redskin Park until Thursday, when Washington will hold a final OTA before opening a three-day minicamp.
The Redskins were punished for excessive contact in one-on-one blocking drills between offensive and defensive linemen. Initially an NFLPA spokesman said one-on-one drills weren't permitted, but Gibbs said, after review, they are. However, a joint statement from the NFL and NFLPA said the organizations didn't like the "intensity and tempo" they saw in clips on redskins.com.
"We felt like we were doing what we should be doing to teach," Gibbs said, declining to say whether he thought the punishment was fair. "But we also understand, if they tell us to do something, hey, we're going to do it. We're going to try to stay within the rules."
Gibbs said he has scaled back certain drills to comply with league rules but hasn't placed any restrictions on redskins.com. The team's official Web site apparently remains free to videotape and broadcast whichever parts of practice it chooses.
Extra points
Second-year H-back Chris Cooley strained his hamstring, the first real injury of the offseason, according to Gibbs. The setback isn't considered serious. ...
Free agent cornerback R.W. McQuarters apparently intensified negotiations with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings, signaling the likely end of Washington's bid. The Redskins were offering only a minimum-salary deal. ...
Washington scheduled a scrimmage at Baltimore for Aug. 6, the first Saturday of training camp. It will be the Redskins' first appearance at M&T Bank Stadium.

Damn someone shot at Taylor??
He could be in a lot worse shape than he is now. (He could have been shot).

Well, good news that he talked to Gibbs, at least. But why does Rosenhaus have to act as an intermediary? Does everything this guy do have to be complicated? Just pick up the damn phone and call, man!
It's like a little kid sending his older brother in first to find out how mad Dad is before they sit down together.
Bullsh*t on that OTA nonsense too...the NFL is drowning in red tape with all these rules and regulations. The players should all get together anyway and practice with themselves away from Redskins Park.

I'm just glad Gibbs and Taylor made contact. Gibbs didn't seem frustrated and seemed very optimistic about the conversation. If Sean really wanted to make a positive statement, he would show up unannounced to training camp and request Snyder's personal access to Redskins One to make court appearances and return back to work. That would go a really long way in repairing his reputation and building his bond with his teammates.

Yeah, I may be hijacking this thread into Tailgate country, but can anybody think of a better example of "what's wrong with unions?" than a profession where "minimum wage" is $500K complaining because six months vacation isn't enough?
Can somebody tell me why, at that level, these guys aren't doing 9 to 5 all year long? (Maybe a month off post-season or something).

Post edit... I just heard on a Sirius Radio interview with Drew Rosenhaus that Sean is going to make his court appearance on 6/24/05 and that he fully intends for Sean to report to Training Camp at the end of July, even though the team previously excused him from activities to handle his personal situation.

Coach Gibbs excused him from the remainder of the voluntary sessions, not Training Camp. I think it's safe to say he'll be there, considering he and Rosenhaus have zero legs to stand on for re-doing the contract right now.

:finger: Taylor! What a punk! Now you want to reward him by letting him ride around on Redskins One like he's somebody?!
After the way he's treated my Hero, Joe Gibbs, I don't ever want to see his worthless :moon: in a Redskins uniform again.

didn't somebody post a few days ago that McQuarters had already agreed to terms with the Giants?

I don't think it was ever verified, was it? Not sure. Either way, they'd be his best best since he'd be a Nickel back and ST player at best here.

Before I start a new thread, I did a search to find out if Taylor was ever in trouble before we drafted him.
Can anybody tell me if he had prior legal problems?
Thanks!

Taylor still couldn't contact Gibbs? He had to have someone else call Gibbs and tell him that if he wants to talk he can call, but otherwise Taylor doesn't want to talk? What a :pooh: head! Will this kid ever learn?
The one good thing about loosing the OTAs is that atleast Cooley can get healthy.

Sit in his shoes for a bit. If you were in his position, would you be in a hurry to talk to an authority figure if you just got yourself into trouble? Probably not. People don't generally like to talk about a situation that they are embarrassed about, for fear of disapproval. It doesn't surprise me at all that it took Rosenhaus to tell him that this is the best thing for him. I'm just glad they talked.

You're crazy. Joe Gibbs knows that he is not just a Head Coach anymore. He holds the purse strings so any time somebody has a problem with their contract it is going to look like they are not respecting the legend. But these are the consequences you have to live with when your a President/Head Coach.

Sean Taylor will be ok. He may have pulled his gun in retaliation in self-defense. He may have felt like his life was being threatened. At least Gibbs said it was a good talk.

Can't Taylor be suspended from the team and lose his bonuses for behavior detrimental to the team.
Maybe when the money is on the line, he feels a duty to call.

His dad is a Chief of Police....what do you think his rap sheet looks like? He doesn't have daddy to make things right any more.
And Sonny Joe Hog, you are right on! On Tony Kornheiser's show today, he ask the studio if Gibbs quit today, would anyone blame him? I wouldn't. And it would be 95 if not 100% Taylor's fault.
You Taylor apologists out there better hope he turns it around quick, or we're going to lose one of the NFL's greatest coaches.

Yeah, right.
Coach Gibbs is going to QUIT b/c of Sean Taylor.
Where do people come up with this stuff?
Why do some mediots and some fans as well, believe that at the first sign of off-the-field adversity, Gibbs is going to bail on the Redskins?
Let me spell it out for you... barring a complete breakdown in health (and geez, the guy is ONLY 63, he hasn't even reached retirement age yet), Gibbs is going NOWHERE.
He'll be here for the time of his contract, at the minimum.
I love the glory years Gibbs gave us as well. The problem is that too many just focus on the GLORY of the past. They forget that he dealt with adversity and difficult players in 'Era 1' as well.
His 0-5 start. He had to deal with criminals (Peters), knuckleheads (Manley), difficult characters (Riggins), and hotheads (Clark). Not to mention that even Redskin legends like Butz and Green held out of mandatory practices for more money.
He had to deal with a, at times, cantankerous owner (Cooke), a sometimes contemptuous arrangement with the GM (Beathard). We had losing seasons, years the team didn't make the playoffs, poor QB play and so forth.
To put it simply, it wasn't all peaches-n-cream for Gibbs the first time around. :) Though I'm sure Gibbs would say it was all worth it for the rewards (3 SB Titles in 10 years).
So I don't think that a little adversity this time involving an immature young man who needs to grow up is going to drive Coach Gibbs away.
The only one who will be outta here is Taylor, if he doesn't grow up. :)
Gibbs is here for the long haul. :)

Uhhh...why?
RW will probably start for the Giants, while here in DC and in Minny he wouldn't be a starter. Unless the Vikings are unhappy with Winfield's performance last season. I hope he ends up in NY so we can smoke him twice a year! :D

Those of you that have had enough of Sean Taylor, I have something to say to you. Don't cheer for him. Don't say anything when he has a great career and goes to the hall of fame as a Redskin. It is not about Joe Gibbs, It is not about Sean Taylor. It is about the Redskins dammit. Anyone on that roster from the best player to worst deserves our support. Until a court of law judges him we shouldn't. That being said I don't agree with everything he has done but I have never once jumped off his bandwagon.

OK, we have a deal on the cheering and HOF. I'm not judging Taylor to be a criminal. He is not a criminal. I DO think he has acted disrespectfully toward his Head Coach and teammates. For that, I judge him to have acted childishly.
By the way, for me it IS about Joe Gibbs. Before Joe, we won NO TITLES in my lifetime. Since he left, we have won NO TITLES. Joe took us to FOUR Super Bowls and won THREE of them with three different quarterbacks. If he was able to win three Superbowls with three different quarterbacks, do you think he might be able to win another one without Taylor?
Would YOU return a telephone call by Joe Gibbs? I bet you would. In fact, I believe that George Bush would return his call! But not the self-centered, self-important Mr. Sean Taylor.
Since you mentioned the HOF, Joe is already enshrined. He IS great, by definition. Taylor has proven nothing.

Well, I have to say I was never on the ST bandwagon (aside from thinking he was a better pick than K2)..so I'll be more than happy to stay off it.
The dude has had one good season on the field. One. Not even a complete season, and not a completely dominating one either. And yet you want to go ahead and put him in the hall of fame already?!
Taylor's got crazy physical talent to be sure, but incident after incident makes you wonder if he'll ever have the mental side. I hope he's not guilty for his own sake, as well as the team's but the fact is unless he uses this as a wake up call...he's going to be more of a headache than anything else to this team.
In Taylor's curent mindset I can't see him finishing out his career as a Redskin either. His actions so far have been all about Sean Taylor and nothing to indicate he "wants" to be a Redskin.
Why should I assume he won't jump on the first train out of town first chance he gets if the money's right?
Taylor has a long way to go toward being a hall of famer and an even longer way toward being a Redskin.
