Republicans Suggest Backlash Against Baseball If Soros Group Wins Bid To Buy Nationals
Mon Jun 27 2005 09:51:22 ET
Despite the Washington Nationals' successful start to the season, to some Capitol Hill Republicans there is a dark cloud on the Nats' horizon: the potential that their newly adopted home team could be purchased by billionaire financier George Soros!
Soros has joined an ownership bid being led by entrepreneur Jonathan Ledecky that is angling to take over the Nats, who are currently owned by Major League Baseball.
ROLL CALL reports: Soros pumped more than $20 million in the last cycle into groups seeking to unseat President Bush and elect Democrats and relates that the very prospect that Soros could have a stake in the team is enough to irritate Congressional Republicans.
"I think Major League Baseball understands the stakes," said Government Reform Chairman Tom Davis (R), who recently convened high-profile steroid hearings.
Davis said that if a Soros sale went through, "I don't think it's the Nats that get hurt. I think it's Major League Baseball that gets hurt.
They enjoy all sorts of exemptions' from anti-trust laws. Rep. John Sweeney (R-N.Y.), vice chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee that covers the District of Columbia budget, said if Soros buys the team and seeks public funding for a new stadium or anything else, the GOP attitude would be, "Let him pay for it."

Ok, who is George Soros and what on earth does it matter if some capitol hill republicans do not approve of the purchase?

who cares if he buys the team? All we need is an owner that cares that the club wins and will fight to get back the TV rights so we can actually see games in this area.

You know, it would be better if we had Dan Snyder as the Nationals owner. His cap would be unlimited.
Yankees Jr.

ugh i hate polotics. It would be cool if Snyder bought the team and built a sweet staidum, but you dont want him making them Yankees Jr, look at Yankees senior. Nats are doing fine, the last thing they need is a medelsom owner to mess it up

I just hope the whoever buys the team does not try to fix what is not broken by getting rid of Frank Robinson and Jim Bowden! They are doing a great job at this point but you know some times these owners want to bring in their own people! :deal:

Soros would make a mockery of the Nats......
He'd probably change the name to the MOVE ON.ORGERS.
Everything then would be a political statement:
Bats would be only 100% recycled
Balls would be made out of hemp fiber not leather
American flag burned during the national anthem,
All nats Uni's would be all Red
No beer served (only wine for those who are rich, white liberals and own luxury suites).

hill members have no say in who owns a mlb team and need to shut up. tell them to represent their own constituants and shut it. mlb will do whats best for mlb. in case tom davis forgot, d.c. isn't represented in the house or senate and sure isn't represented by him, and neither is baseball. get back to work davis and stop reading espn.com from your office.

Selig said if they are the best group then they wil be the owners, he isn't going to let congress tell him what to do when it comes to ownership

You guys that say the Hill will have no say in this are crazy. Selig is just playing tough for the cameras. With all the steroid issues going around, Selig is kissing @ss behind closed doors. If he pisses off enough ppl in congress, he'll be on his way out the door in no time.

This might be true, and congress might make his life a PITA but thats about it. And baseball is out to get paid, they will sell to the team that pays the most, thats the bottom line.

It is very pathetic that politicians seem to have a need to insert themselves in an area in which they have no say and shouldn't even be making comments upon.....who cares if Soros owns the team....99% of the Nationals supporters certainly won't they just want an owner that will care and will make sure they can see their team without having to pay Angelos for the right....

His stake is also only 13% and he and Ledeky have never met. So will not BE the owner just have a minimal stake in the team.

In case you forgot the DC budget is approved and funded by the House and Senate and those of us that live in the 50 states who pay for and support Washington DC. Get a clue. Put an extremeist like Soros in MLB and say good by to the anti-trust exemption. Then say good-bye to baseballas we know it.

Thank you, some of you are funny thinking he will have power, he is a minority owner so won't hear at all from him. The only thing from him that will be talking is his wallet
I don't give a dam who the onwer is, just want them to put a good product to fill the stadium
