That covers.com article (http://www.extremeskins.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=104967) has yet another "writer" declaring doom due to the fact that Moss is a "smallish receiver".

for one, I don't think we will see a true #1 on this team, but my main point is that according to team rosters, Moss is 5'10", Coles is 5'11", yet Moss is considered "smallish"

Just browsing a few other teams web site's rosters, here are a few other "smallish" starting WR's. -

Stokley, Brandon WR 5-11 197

Coles, Laveranues WR 5-11 193

Chrebet, Wayne WR 5-10 188

Hall, Dante WR 5-8 187

Clayton, Mark Wide Receiver 5'10 195

Mason, Derrick Wide Receiver 5'10

Moss, Santana WR 5-10 185

Wade, Bobby WR 5-10 192 - Bears

Galloway, Joey WR 5-11 197

Hilliard, Ike WR 5-11 210

Glenn, Terry WR 5-11

Price, Peerless WR 5-11 190

Colbert, Keary WR 5-10

Bobby Engram WR 5-10 188

Darrell Jackson WR 5-11 201

Campbell, Kelly WR 5-10 171

Peter Warrick WR 5-11

Evans, Lee WR 5-10 197

Reed, Josh WR 5-10 208

Caldwell, Reche WR 5-11

Troy Brown WR 5-10 196

...and my favorite, - Superbowl MVP, Deion Branch WR 5-9 193

I figure it's not even about their size. If Patrick is on, they'll be alright. If he's not, they could be 6'5" and it wouldn't matter.

Alright! good job with the list.
Deion Branch what a loser see where his height got him.
Short people dont make it in the NBA either.
Also short people tend to get lost in the secondary?

I always found that funy as well. People always bring up that we "lack size" at WR now that coles is gone.

Coles is a shrpimp as well and an inch is the difference between the two.

Thanks Jimster. Good research. Nothing like making a good point with facts.

Although Marvin Harrison is listed at 6'0, that might be a stretch. He looks much smaller on TV.

It all has to do with the quarterback. As much as I'd like it to be about the wide receivers, it's all about how the quarterback does.

the guy clearly is not too small to be effective... the question is does he play "bigger" than his size and how tough is he? What is the size of his game so to speak?

hmmm. its funny, now when i take a look at St. Louis' recieving corp. i don't even see one player over 6'0 feet!!, and this is one of the best passing teams in the league.

My sentiments exactly. I suppose it's the lack of football that's causing it. Once the season starts either these writers will shut up or we fans will shut up :D

Obviously Height isn't everything or else McCants would be our starting WR, as it is he might not even make the roster.

Coles played a lot bigger than his size. Moss is not nearly as tough but is faster and better outside the hash marks. Its true Moss plays like he is 5'10" Coles played like he was Rod Gardners size.

Yeah, Coles did seem taller than his actual size. Their gameplay seems like apples and oranges to me.

another example is the Colts...

Pyatt, Brad WR 5-11 195
Stokley, Brandon WR 5-11 197
Walters, Troy WR 5-7 172 6
Wayne, Reggie WR 6-0 198

vs. Redskins...

Dyson, Kevin WR 6-2 212
Jacobs, Taylor WR 6-0 198
McCants, Darnerien WR 6-3 214
Moss, Santana WR 5-10 185
Patten, David WR 5-10 190
Thrash, James WR 6-0 200

....but our kicker is 6'3" 240 :whoknows:

Ok, now make a list of all the top receivers in the league. These are the top receivers by yards (not counting TE's) See how many of them are under 6'0"? Out of top 30 (excluding the 3 TE's over 6ft), you have a grand total of 3.

Mushin Muhammad
Joe Horn
Javon Walker
Torry Holt
Isaac Bruce
Chad Johnson
Drew Bennett
Reggie Wayne
Donald Driver
Terrell Owens
Darrell Jackson
Michael Clayton
Jimmy Smith
Derrick Mason --- 5'10"
Rod Smith
Andre Johnson
Marvin Harrison
Eddie Kennison
Ashley Lelie
Brandon Stokley ---- 5'11"
Eric Moulds
Nate Burleson
Hines Ward
Jerry Porter
Keyshawn Johnson
T.J. Houshmandzadeh
Laveranues Coles --- 5'11"

The point is not that the receivers under 6 feet tall are better, but that they are commonplace and can still be just as successful, as opposed to the way the media likes to descibe the Moss as "smallish".

So size doesn't matter? Or it does? This sounds like another discussion I've heard. never mind.

I think the problem that the Skins had last year at the WR position was twofold:

1. We dropped the ball often.

2. We didn't has much success running AFTER the ball was caught.

I would agree that the QB is the most important part of a passing offense but I don't think it is all about the QB. A good QB is going to have a much tougher time throwing to receivers who can not get separation or actually catch the ball.

As far as Moss and our "smallish" receivers; If they can run good routs, get open, catch the ball consistently were happy - right?

Thank you.

The same list, if not longer can be made for the bigger recievers.

Well all that I can add to this discussion is this; It's not the size of the boat, it's the motion of the ocean that counts!

... Oh wait, I thought I was still in the Tailgate, sorry!

You forgot Steve Smith, 5-9 185.

Interesting; you chose your receivers by yardage. Let's look at the top 26 scoring wideouts (not including TEs):

1 Muhsin Muhammad
2 Marvin Harrison - 6'0
3 Terrell Owens
5 Randy Moss
6 Reggie Wayne - 6'0
7 Javon Walker
8 Drew Bennett
9 Joe Horn
10 Brandon Stokley - 5'11
11 Torry Holt - 6'0
12 Lee Evans - 5'10
13 Chad Johnson
14 Jerry Porter
15 Donald Driver - 6'0
16 Nate Burleson - 6'0
17 Eddie Kennison
18 Larry Fitzgerald
19 Roy Williams
20 Marcus Robinson
21 Chris Chambers - 5'11
23 David Patten - 5'10
24 Derrick Mason - 5'10
25 Ashley Lelie
26 Rod Smith - 6'0
28 Darrell Jackson - 6'0
30 Michael Clayton

12 of 26 are 6'0 and under. That's a significant amount (I include 6'0 because we've got a couple of those on the roster). 5 of 26 are under 6 feet.
