Dyson Fitting In On Redskins' WR Corps

Kevin Dyson has reached the point of his NFL career where he is a mentor for up-and-coming receivers just as much as a competitor with those same receivers for playing time.
It's a role that Dyson welcomes. The eight-year veteran has plenty of knowledge to impart, not to mention a few memories. His first conversation with new teammates--and coaches, too--invariably turns to two of the most famous plays in NFL history, both of which involved Dyson.

There's the so-called "Music City Miracle," of course. Dyson, then playing for the Tennessee Titans, caught a lateral on a kickoff return and raced down the sideline for a game-winning touchdown in a 1999 Wild Card playoff game against the Buffalo Bills.

A few weeks later, with a handful of seconds left in Super Bowl XXXIII, Dyson was stopped one yard short of the goal line on the last play of the game. The stop secured the St. Louis Rams' 23-16 win.

"Those two plays are the first things that some of the guys here asked me about," Dyson said. "Even some of the coaches asked me about them. It's something that's going to live forever. Obviously I haven't had a storybook career like Jerry Rice, but my name will go down in history just because I'll never be forgotten from those two plays."

Dyson even entered the NFL making headlines. In 1998, he was the first wide receiver selected in the draft, 15th overall by the Titans. That was nine spots ahead of the more-heralded Randy Moss.

The 6-2, 212-pound Dyson has appeared in 59 games with 54 starts in his NFL career. He has recorded 178 catches for 2,325 yards and 18 touchdowns. He has played in two Super Bowls--he was a member of the Carolina Panthers' Super Bowl run in the 2003 season--and has eight catches for 82 yards in the postseason.

Dyson has had a myriad of injuries, including a torn Achilles injury and two torn knee ligaments, since 2000. He sat out the 2004 season after being released by the San Diego Chargers during preseason.

Now healthy, Dyson expects to enter training camp competing for a backup job on the Redskins' revamped wide receiver corps. He signed with the team in early June.

"Even if you're a backup, you want to be able to prepare yourself like you are a starter," he said. "I've had that mentality my whole career. Competition makes everyone better. [During the June 17-19 mini-camp], I got better every day in practice. And I'm pushing everyone in front of me to get better."

Added head coach Joe Gibbs: "Kevin's got that smoothness about him. You can tell he's not in awe of what's going on. He's bright. What he adds for us is that he fits into our group and he's been around. I think he's going to make a run at this."

In the meantime, Dyson wants to help bring along young receivers Taylor Jacobs, Darnerien McCants and Antonio Brown, among others.

"I bring experience and knowledge of the game," Dyson said. "I've been in three systems in the NFL, so I've seen it all. Teammates ask me questions all the time about how I approach the game and the experiences I've had in the playoffs."

Discussing team chemistry and what makes a successful team, Dyson said: "Everybody has to be humble and understand that we're all in this together. The teams that are successful are humble. There are no egos involved.

"You look at the [Super Bowl champion] New England Patriots and you could have easily said there are four or five guys who could have been starters anywhere else. David Patten had to split time with all of those receivers. He humbled himself and said, Look, I'll do whatever is best for the team. I want to win games.' That is first and foremost. You want to find a situation where you fit in, and then try to make plays when you're number is called."

I hope Dyson has a couple of solid years left in those raggedy legs!!!

If Dyson can step up as our Fourth guy, and maybe even red zone guy with cooley (because of his height) that would be worth alot, and an added plus to the veteran leadership he is said to be showing.

I hope this season is something special for this team. There's a ton of negativity coming from the media. I hope a good story like Dyson's adds to this team's chemistry and is the heat that creates men of steal. Joe Gibbs said diversity is what builds character, and character is at the center of the heart of a champion. This team must now have the heart of champions with all the diversity they are experiencing this off-season. Let's watch this all unfold on the field.

More than likely, Dyson is fighting McCants and Antonio Brown for the 5th receiver spot. I suppose we may keep 6 WRs if Brown is that damned valuable as a return man... but I'm still thinking we've got three guys fighting for one roster position.

It's too bad. Assuming that Dyson is healthy, I can see value in all three guys.

hopefully our offense has evolved enough to take advantage of our talent.

since we don't have FB's on the roster, we may keep 6 WR's. - It depends on how many TE/HB's Gibbs wants to keep.

Something tells me McCants will be the odd man out. Patten, Thrash and Dyson are all good examples work ethic-wise, for the younger players on the team.

I don't know why but I have had a good feeling about Dyson ever since we signed him. I love the attitude and work ethic of our receivers. From Thrash to Jacobs to Patten to Dyson.

I mean you have to expect the skins to keep Moss, Patten, Jacobs and Thrash. Then you have Brown (KR,PR), McCants and Dyson. Its going to be real tough for him to make the team.

Signing people with playoff experience, is not at all surprising
to me since that is exactly where I expect this team to be this year.

The attitude that Dyson talks about winning teams having is the kind of attitude that I am starting to see around Redskins Park. It started last year and this offseason has been a real character building time for a team to come together and shut out all the negativity.

I hope Dyson can make the team. But if McCants, proves he can do ST then I have no problem cutting Dyson.

I think that they will keep Dyson over McCants just because of experience, and even with Brown that only puts us at 6 WRs which should be all we would keep. Dyson (if healthy) runs great routes, knows how to find holes in the zone coverage, and has the height that McCants does, but McCants has to so ALOT to make this team.

Aside from the Sean Taylor Incident(s), I'm not sure what the source would be of negative vibes. We lost a couple of good players? Yeah -- who doesn't? That's football, Sparky. We've added high character guys and become faster. Also: stability among most of the personnel and the entire coaching staff -- with one notable addition as QB coach. I've been very excited by this off-season. The acquisition of Dyson is consistent with the good vibes I've been getting.

I hope he bumps out McCants. Dyson is an upgrade there and wants to play football (instead of worrying about being an "artist").

we're probably gonna keep McCants anyways, obviously for being a bit younger. I hope Dyson does return to the form he was in Tennessee, he would be a good threat in 4 receiver plays.

Very nice read, but this quote pretty much says it all. Just about every successful team has this humbleness about it. Keeping their eye on the prize.

I hope Dyson makes it! :point2sky

I'm not falling in love with Dyson.
As a Charger fan 2nd was excited last offseason when they brought him in. I read and listened to similar interviews from him for a while down here. I thought he was the perfect fit for such a young corp of WRs.
Then he got cut. By a team that had nothing at WR (McCardel wasn't in the picture yet, and Antonio Gates was still a project).
Then he stayed unemployed the whole season.
Those 2 things really scare me about Dyson.

Hopefully me and the other 31 teams are wrong, but I don't expect anything from him.

If it was about being a mentor, why not bring in Rice or Tim Brown?

I would be really surprised if Mcants makes the team. he will be cut

Damn he was selected ahead of Randy Moss, that's pretty insane. Their two careers are lifetimes apart!

Oh well, I'm for a Dyson comeback, as long as we win games.
