I heard a rumor he was going to return as a coach of some kind, but that was awhile ago. I say any way we can get him back is fine by me

Not sure of his contract status

It wouldn't surprise me though, to A)reach the salary floor and B) as a gesture to the fans

next to Rod Langway, Peter Bondra is the most recognizable figure in Caps history. he lead the team to the Stanley Cup Finals and played 14 years in Washington (scoring over 400 goals) before being shipped to Ottawa..............

Not to be a stickler but Bondra was hurt in the opening series against Boston that year and missed most of the playoffs.

That being said I would love to see them bring him back. He belongs in DC.

Currently the caps haven't offered him a contract....if you want an update on the caps contract situation and who they have offered contracts to check out www.hockeysfuture.com and go to the washington caps page...and then to the message board....they usually have the best data on the caps around especially concerning the current set of free agents signings.....also some good discussion concerning Semin and other caps prospects...

Report: Caps make offer to Bondra

With a dearth of proven talent on the roster, the Washington Capitals may be addressing the problem by turning back the clock.

According to the Washington Times, the Capitals extended a contract offer to right wing Peter Bondra, the franchise's all-time leading scorer.

Bondra, 37, spent his entire 13-season NHL career with the Caps before he was sent to Ottawa on Feb. 18, 2004, for center Brooks Laich.

Bondra scored five goals and 14 points in 23 games with the Senators, but the Sens did not to pick up Bondra's $3.4-million option, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Peter Bondra was the face of the organization through the 1990's. His numbers are unassailable and was often the only consistent offensive weapon on the team heading into the postseason. He lead the league in goals a couple of times and showed outstanding sportsmanship in wearing the uniform.

Dale Hunter was a high energy hockey player for a lot of years in the NHL. However, his cheap shot on Pierre Turgeon in the playoffs (ie once the game was over) to me signalled a player that lacked the class and sportsmanship to handle himself as well in defeat as in victory. As such, he doesn't rank up there with Langway and Bondra.

Langway at his size and strength could easily have ended a number of players' careers if he wanted to play the game viciously, taking blatant penalties and without regard to winning the games. To his credit, he never did that. In fact he usually skated away from the fighters in the league, knowing his presence in the penalty box would only hurt the club.

It would be a blessing to see Bondra back, as a guide to the new generation of caps players (seeing as almost the whole team is under 25 now). He would be worth having back as a mentor alone.

And Hunter did have class, he had hockey class.

Dale Hunter protected everyone on the team. If someone was going to try and take down Gartner, they knew who would be waiting for them at the end of the shift. I couldn't possibly disagree with you more.
The cheapshot, however, while I do feel it was wrong (although exemplified my emotions at the time), was light in comparison to much of the crap that goes on in the NHL. Dale Hunter will go down in history as one of my favorite Caps of all time, alongside Langway, Gartner (even though he left, he was by far my favorite at the time), and yes, PB.
