No one could have scripted Clinton Portis's Redskins debut any better. On his first carry, he dazzled fans by racing 64 yards for a touchdown that sparked a Week 1 win over Tampa Bay.
Portis found yards harder to come by after Week 1, however. Opponents recognized his big-play ability and stacked the line of scrimmage against him. As the Redskins' passing attack struggled and opponents continued to pound on Portis, he remained patient.

His total of 1,315 yards in 2004 were some of his hardest-earned yards as a professional.

"It was a grind-it-out season," Portis said. "I kept telling myself, 'Don't get frustrated if you only get two or three yards on a carry, because eventually you'll get six or seven or something.' When you get your opportunity, you have to make the best of it."

Portis has now adjusted from Denver's West Coast offense to Joe Gibbs' run-first approach. He knows how to run like a power back, and he's ready to help the offense improve in 2005.

"Of course, this year I'll be better because it'll be another year after the adjustment," Portis said. "Last year was a learning experience. We all went through it together and now we can look forward to a better season."

Memorable Game:
In Week 6 at Chicago last season, Portis and the Redskins' defense displayed a formula that would allow the team to win three of its final four games last season. Portis led the Redskins' offense in a taut game against the Bears, rushing for 171 yards on 36 carries and caught one pass for 11 yards. The defense closed out the game in the final seconds of a 13-10 win.

From the Files:
A native of Gainesville, Fla., Portis was a standout in track and field at Gainesville High School, clocking 10.6 in the 100 meters and participating on a state-record 4x100-meter relay team (40.8) and state champion 4x400-meter relay team. He also posted a leap of 6'-6" in the high jump and 22'-8" in the long jump

Portis is the S-H- well you know the rest .....
I can't wait to watch him be more patient behind the line this year and take everything Earnest Byner has taught him and make him the pro-bowler hes born to be. I just wanna see one Redskin in all the NIKE commercials , or on the T.V. every five seconds. Im so sick of seeing every other team having "that guy" Portis will now be "that guy" for the Redskins!
... See you all in the playoffs ....

No offense to Clinton intended, but 10.6 is a good, but not great time in the 100 for high school. I personally ran a 11 flat, and I am and was a skinny ass white boy. At the time I was 6' 145 lbs. One of my teamates ran a 10.3 consistently and he was 5'5". 40.8 is however an extremely good 4x100 time. My 4x100 team set the school record at 42.3, and 1.5 seconds is an eternity in the 4x100.

I do look for really good things out of Clinton this year though.
