Dolphins rookie Wright cries during practice

July 26, 2005
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

DAVIE, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins rookie Manuel Wright apparently is having a difficult time adjusting to the NFL, and was in tears Tuesday.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pound defensive tackle from Southern California -- the only pick in this month's supplemental draft -- broke down during an afternoon practice session.

Exactly why Wright lost his composure was unclear. Team policy does not allow reporters access to players following a midday interview period.

"As you well know, young players need to develop the kind of mental toughness and attitude that they need to be professionals," coach Nick Saban said. "So we are trying to help him with that, too, which may be why we need to get on him a little at times."

Wright was eligible for the supplemental draft because he is three years out of high school. As a sophomore at USC last season, he had 23 tackles, including six for losses, and recovered two fumbles.

Saban said the rookie has struggled a bit so far with muscle soreness and other issues, and believes Wright is "probably not in as good of shape as he needs to be in."

Wright was able to finish the workout, Miami's third of this year's training camp.

"I got on him about what we wanted him to try to do at least today, to try
and work himself through it, and he responded well to it," Saban said.

Not sure why this is a story...I honestly feel for the guy, and now every football fan in America is going to poke fun at him.

Saban must be running one hell of a difficult program to make a guy break down and cry.

poor guy. i don't know whether to say football is for men, not cryboys, or just feel sorry for him. i feel sorry for him, but if he's crying cuz practice is too hard, he might not be in the right league.

Alot of stress in football, I suppose.

I know HS football training camp was hard when I played.....I don't remember really crying (even when I got my knees injured) but I know there where days where the coaches would run you ragged.

I guess the pros is just as hard, if not harder.

That's it, no free agent is going to sign with the Dolphins now because their head coach makes the players cry.

and didn't I read where some writers were thinking this guy was a decent bet to be taken as high as the third round of the supplemental draft?

say all you want about Derrick Dockery's inconsistent play at OG, but as a #3 pick he came in and finished training camp without falling over like a sack of potatoes and then crying about it ;)

ya know i was thinking the same thing. i'm sure this guy has gone through some intense camps from hs to collge. maybe saban has weights attached to guy's nipples or something. or maybe it was tears of joy?

Well...it's not for everyone. He may not be cut out for that kind of life/occupation. I'm not gonna sit here and judge the guy's manhood though. Not the place for it(crying) though, not from soreness or coaches riding you. hmmm. Shouldn't have even made the press/an article on it. They report any and everything now.

This will follow this man for the rest of his career (if he even has a career after Saban is done with him). For the rest of his life he will be known as a crybaby. I feel sorry for his children...if and when he has any.

This is the type of **** that really just does not need to be reported.

I mean who really cares about a football player crying and all this does is embarrass the crap out of him.

July-26th-2005, 10:51 PM
No one can call him a cry baby, if you don't even know him, or the circunstances.

Sounds like Saben did it on purpose with that one quote.
"As you well know, young players need to develop the kind of mental toughness and attitude that they need to be professionals," coach Nick Saban said. "So we are trying to help him with that, too, which may be why we need to get on him a little at times."

Baculus
July-26th-2005, 11:06 PM
Well, I bet he'll never feel a need to breakdown after he reads the press coverage on this. Who knows, maybe he just needed to get it out once, and he'll develop some football toughness. But you never know what's happening behind the scenes in his life, and maybe it just came out at the wrong time.

Come on, kid, take it out on that tackling dummy! Or the next guy that's in front of ya in camp!

Watch, tomorrow, we'll find out that this guy's sister or some close family member passed.

Or that there was a misquote on Saben, and he really meant "made some little kids cry" or something like that.

Please, we've all seen great champions like Michael Jordan and Pete Sampras cry their guts out. If the kid is a good player, then it makes him look like he's got a lot of heart. If he sucks, well then he's just a big fat crybaby, hehe.

I think the last thing a rookie needs is to have a story like this get out. If you think teammates and if he makes the team, opposing teams will not use that to get under his skin and mess up what mental state the kid has then you dont watch football.
I can see the baby formula in his locker every time he opens it up.

BogeyMan
July-27th-2005, 06:52 AM
I could see rookies getting pretty frustrated and emotional - it's got to be pretty confusing to come in and get used to a new system, plus deal with guys that are a lot bigger and stronger than you had to face in college. I doubt it's really that big a deal.

Better to cry on the field than crap your pants like the Dallas defensive lineman did a few years ago.

I don't see it as an issue at all. He got overwhelmed or frustrated. He cried. Big deal. Not worth reporting, and won't mean a thing in the future. The issue is whether or not he's able to handle being in the NFL. If he does well and cries all the time, who cares?

Thank God he is not a 'Skin. We'd never hear the end of it.

It seems the Dolphins have had a ton of head cases in the last several years. Ricky Williams plight is well documented.

Cecil Collins would break into homes to watch people sleep. http://www.phins.com/news99/News_9912161006.html.

Dimitrius Underwood slashed his own throat and then wanted to become a preacher. http://www.sptimes.com/News/92899/Sports/Police_say_Underwood_.shtml

The crying kid seems to just be upholding a Dolphin training camp tradition.

Must be the heat? :whoknows:

It's interesting how different people respond to pressure. Some cry. Some pull a gun. Either way it's immaturity, which is curable.

Dudes cry in football all the time after losses and what not. Cedric Benson was crying like a baby when he got drafted and the guys were saying it showed how much heart he had. Sounds like Saban just broke this guy down to get it out of his system. Non story. I agree w/ Code that this is much less embarassing than pooping yourself on TV.
