View Full Version : The best player NEVER to win a Superbowl?

Stew

Just another mind numbing question to throw around until Camp starts. Who is the best player to never win a SuperBowl?

Leonard Washington
July-28th-2005, 01:08 PM
that's tough. between barry and dan. i'll go with barry since he was never even close.

Why the hell is Andre Reed on that list?

I needed a decent WR that hasnt won a Superbowl. By all means, I hope we can dig up other players that arent even on this list.

Stew

I was unsure about Steve Largent, but i think they only went to the playoffs once, I could be wrong though.

The answer may be a toss up between Dan and Barry but you need to take off Andre Reed and Jim Kelly and replace them with Bruce Smith and Cris Carter, and Eric Dickerson.

July-28th-2005, 01:15 PM
I would have to say Dan, he has more control then anyone else. Barry had to have help from any others to even get there.

can I edit the thread? You guys are right though about B. Smith and C. Carter, I was just having a slow mental moment inbetween office reports. I had totally forgotten about Cris Carter, But Bruce Smith should have retired before coming to Washington.

As much as I enjoyed watching Barry Sanders run the football, I am going with Marino in this poll. Most years, he had the presence of no running game and no defense, but singlehandedly made the Dolphins a playoff contender.

I agree. Dan played until his knees couldn't take it anymore. Barry walked away when he could have played more years. He could have held out for a trade to another team and I think most people would have supported him.

Really no discussion here. Toss up, Marino and Sanders. Either answer is correct. Marino may get the edge, since he actually owns all the passing records and Barry quit early...

B. Smith did well here in Washington until the last two years and even then, he was the one that put the most pressure on the QB's. He had double digit sacks with us his first year...i think he had 10 or 11. And his second year wasn't that bad either. I think he was a good addition on the field and in the locker room for his leadership. Hell if it weren't for him, we would have never had the nickname 50/50 for R. Gardner!

Stew
July-28th-2005, 01:38 PM
I still think he should have retired before coming here. I feel he held on too long like Jerry Rice, but thats just me. 50/50 got his nickname at Clemson, he has had it since college.

I want to start another one with the best Head Coachnever to win a SuperBowl, but i dont want to go flooding the site with threads, so maybe i can rebound from my Reed and Kelly mistake by posing that question. Any takers?

For as great as he was, the records he has...i mean, his career has a big blank spot for not winning a super bowl.

I don't feel bad for athletes often, but I feel bad when someone like that misses out on the championship that would complete their career.

I think Jim Kelly deserves some mention here. I mean, he went 4 times consecutively. Say what you want, but thats gotta hurt.

Plus he beat Dan's A S S. What more do you want. He should definately be mentioned amongst the greatest to never win one.

Here's a quick quote from

http://64.233.179.104/search?q=cache:eakhjm401i0J:www.buffalosportshallf ame.com/Class_of_1997/Jim_Kelly/jim_kelly.html+%22jim+kelly%22+%22dan+marino%22+pl ayoffs&hl=en

"While Jim never received the acclaim accorded Dan Marino and John Elway for fourth-quarter exploits, Kelly's Bills posted a 4-2 record against Elway's Broncos, and a 15-8 mark (3-0 in the playoffs) against Marino's Dolphins. "

Barry Sanders was always over-rated imo. Truly spectacular highlight reel moments. Some of the most amazing athletic feats (feets too) I've ever seen but not a player to win games with.

I remember when the Redskins used to play against the Barry Sanders Lions that I never worried. Sure, Barry was good for 1-2 80+ yard spectacular touchdown runs a game but that was it. Add those two runs to about 15-20 runs for negative carries and he would contribute about 7-14 points, 130 yards, and a whole bunch of 3 and outs.

Sonny Jurgensen - The best pure passer ever. They compared Marino's quick release to the Redhead.

though i dont completely agree with what you are saying but if it were true... how many RBs in the league would almost guarantee the team 14 points, 100+ yards a game?

i know the knock on barry is that he isnt a short yardage RB but he never really had a line to block for him so he had no choice to run around to make something happen.

Among the runners I would have to add Earl Campbell to the list with Sanders. Campbell carried the Oilers for years and they were just a half step behind the best team of the decade in the Steelers, who unfortunately for Campbell were in his division.

if Campbell and Houston had been in the NFC in the 1970's, they probably would have been in 2 or even 3 Super Bowls.

O.J. Simpson

Warren Moon (my personal choice)
Bruce Smith/Thurman Thomas

Some players on the fringe of the discussion would probably be Boomer Esiason, Bernie Kosar and Ozzie Newsome

IMO, he's the greatest qb ever, period.

He never had a running game, never had a defense, teams always knew the phins were going to throw, they dropped back 7 dbs and still couldn't stop him. (only Jimmy Johnson could do that).
Its a shame that he is not considered the greatest because he was never on a great team like Montana or Unitas. Put Montana on those Dolphins teams and I doubt they'd ever make the playoffs. Marino also had more 4th quarter come backs than Montana as well.

As a RB, while it's a great accomplishment, there is much less like pressure to win a Super Bowl. As QB's are judged on "how much did they win" and sadly Dan never got the ring, blame it on his RB's, his defenses, his coaching, injuries, heck blame it on Dan, but he never got it no matter what and thats why he's the greatest player to never win....by far.....

Voted for Marino. Barry was amazing to watch but the RB doesnt hold as much weight when winning a superbowl as QB does..imo.
As the QB you are viewed as the General/Leader of your team. When they don't win the "BIG" game they get labled, by lines like.. "he could never get over the hump.. can't win the big one...etc." There are plenty of RB's who dont have superbowl rings. But IMO there arent that many elite QB's to play and not win a superbowl. (Dan Fouts..can't think of any others right now)

Twice:
