'05 Player Preview: Santana Moss

http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=1894

Before Joe Gibbs traded for Santana Moss, he extensively reviewed film of Moss's four-year tenure with the New York Jets. It led Gibbs to a satisfying conclusion: Moss is a "big-play guy."

Moss proved as much during the Jets' playoff run last season. In a Wild Card round victory at San Diego, Moss had four receptions for a team-high 100 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown catch. The following week at Pittsburgh, in a game New York lost 20-17 in overtime, Moss broke through with an electrifying 75-yard punt return for a score.

Moss's biggest asset is his speed, which makes him a dangerous big-play threat. He is capable of stretching the field vertically, something the Redskins struggled with in 2004.

"I have some pretty good wheels--I can run," Moss said. "I don't consider myself the fastest. There are a lot of guys in this league who are fast. I consider myself a guy on the football field where there is no telling how fast I can go."

Added Gibbs: "When Santana hits the ground with the ball, he's very elusive."

In his first season with the Redskins, Moss is looking to capitalize on every chance he has to contribute.

"It's not about being the number one or number two receiver," Moss said. "It's about just taking advantage of every opportunity that you're given and going out and doing the best with it."

Memorable Game:

For a two-week stretch in 2003, Moss was prolific. In a Week 8 game against the Giants, Moss caught 10 passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns. A week later, against the Oakland Raiders, Moss hauled in six receptions for 146 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown catch. The touchdown marked his fifth consecutive week with a scoring reception.

From the Files:

Moss was an elite athlete in track and field at the University of Miami. In 2000, he captured both the triple jump and the long jump titles at the 2000 Big East Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer for the 2000 Big East Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

I like his attitude about not caring whether he's #1 or 2. I hope he can prove that his 2003 season wasn't a fluke.

BTW, does anyone have video of the punt return and TD catch from the Steelers game? I watched most of that game, but I didn't get to see that part.

Whether he puts up or not he aint goin anywhere for a while. danny boy locked him up for a long time. I dont think we will have to worry about it though. I think this offense fits him to a tee. We run alot of short passes that a guy like moss will most likely run better then coles and garnder who only had straight ahead ability. Also, with defenses not knowing what kind of changes we have made to the offense i think he gets off to a huge start.

that's exactly what he is, a big-play guy

Moss doesn't need 90 catches to be effective

It is also telling that Jets fans weren't so sad to see Coles go because they claimed Moss was as good or better....

I have been saying this to every idiot out there that thought Coles was such a great receiver for us. The sad thing is even with 90 catches he still have one TD. ONE. Now how many time would Moss take it to the house having 90 catches . I think is a safe bet it would be more than one time.

I feel as though losing Coles was big, but Moss can bring a new dimension to the position for us. I also feel like David Patten will be a HUGE upgrade in dedication and football-smarts over Rod Gardner. If Ramsey's on, we'll be okay as far as passing production.

I think what sold Gibbs on this guy is Moss plays big in big games. Against the hated Gianst he had 10 catches. Against the Chargers I saw that 47 yard TD play. He beat two guys for the TD. Everybody in ths stadium knew it was going to Moss, and he won the battle anyway. That is what cold me on Coles for Moss deal.

Leonard,

You may actually see a few wr screens going to Moss after all he's known as a good punt returner.
