LaVar due to report on time
By David Elfin
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

LaVar Arrington will report to training camp as scheduled this afternoon, but the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker's 19-month-old contract dispute with the Washington Redskins has not been settled.

The framework of a settlement, which would have given Arrington an unspecified amount of the $6.5 million in dispute, was reached during a meeting Wednesday at Redskin Park that included Arrington, agent Carl Poston, NFL Players Association executive director Gene Upshaw, Redskins owner Dan Snyder and club president/coach Joe Gibbs.

Attorneys on both sides still had to hammer out the final details when The Washington Post erroneously reported a settlement that had Arrington not receiving any money. That report caused consternation in Arrington's camp and set the negotiations back considerably -- a fact that could cause the sides to wind up in front of an arbitrator in September.

The dispute stems from the eight-year, $68 million contract extension Arrington signed in December 2003 in order to give the Redskins some wiggle room just in time for that season's salary cap. Arrington and Poston, who also signed the contract, maintain that the deal included a $6.5 million signing bonus. Snyder and his aides say that no such payment was promised. Gibbs was not then with the organization.

Upshaw is involved in the talks at Arrington's request, as is NFLPA general counsel Richard Berthelesen. Attorney Steve Brown, whom Arrington hired just before asking for a postponement of a scheduled July 18 arbitration of the dispute, also attended the meeting. So did Redskins director of football administration Eric Schaffer, who had negotiated the contract with Poston in 2003.

After signing the extension, Arrington missed all but four games last year with a knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery in September and again in April. Arrington's knee still is apparently not sufficiently healed for him to fully participate when practice begins tomorrow.

Damn Washington Post....This is why the Skins started reporting their own news b/c these idiots keep reporting incorrect information...

Didnt they also cause Arrington to restart this grievance after he decided to drop it by reporting that the Skins didnt think he had a chance to win the grievance...

The Post definately seems to either have something against the Skins or are trying to stir up Redskins news to sell more papers...

Why would an erroneous report by the Post cause any difficulty at all?

The Redskins, Lavar's agent, the NFLPA and Lavar come to an agreement that either includes additional money, or not. Either way, you would have to assume that Lavar was fully informed about the details of the deal. He was there when they came up with it and even if he didn't fully understand the talks while they were going on, he had to have had them explained to him during and after the negotiations. Then the Post, not a party involved in the negotiations in any way, reports that the agreement includes no additional money, and that causes Lavar to want to back out of the deal? That makes no sense at all.

The Post was wrong, again, cool, but that obviously doesn't mean the Times is right. Elfin's nugget that the Arrington camp freaked out over the Post story makes no sense. Why would the Post story have any bearing on the official, private talks between the Redskins FO and Arrington's reps?

Is it because Arrington's camp thought the Redskins FO leaked the "news" that Arrington got jack to make him look like he was the loser?

Or is the Arrington camp just that stupid to freak out over something so trivial as a Post story nowadays?

Or is the Times just speculating and making crap up?

Too bad Elfin doesn't elaborate on his little nugget. But, hey, that's probably too much to ask from the crew covering the Redskins these days.

You can't help but think the whole media contingent covering the Redskins is just a big bunch of morons.

And to think these are the guys criticizing the Redskins FO for a bunch of mishaps...

If all true, it looks like ole Spotlight is still having trouble letting this thing go.

I guess it's hard to just say "I'm a stupid ***** jock that don't understand contract negotiations, and I realize now I should just STFU and get back on the field where I do know what's going on."

But I guess since his knee isn't well enough to practice yet, he's just making sure that "HE" is "THE STORY" on Monday.

The guy loves the spotlight. I can only hope it shines on him this year because of his play on the field and not this bull$hit.

The Redskins shouldn't give him another dime. Unless they want to pick up the legal fees for Spotlight to go after the Postons, as a show of concern for his well-being.
I could live with that.

I noticed the Poston's aren't included in these meetings.

I would NOT like to see the Redskins give Lavar another penny.

That's what I'm thinking. Who cares what the post says? Why would that have ANY affect on the settlement?

Where the Post has messed this up in the past is when Arrington was likely to stop all this a while back, reports in the Post angered his side and caused him to continue. Now the Post says it's over, and again, Arrington sees this and realizes that's what people are saying, which bothers him. You'll have to ask him why, but, the Post keeps getting this wrong.

If I'm not mistaking, andyman never declared that Lavar would get nothing, just that a meeting would be held, Andy was more accurate than the post.

The team needs to get control over thier people . Lavar needs to fire the Postons. That is the only way this is going to get settled.

You're right of course. What I left out was, "...and then they just made up the rest."
Like usual.

I should have been more clear.

The Post just gives Lavar's ignorant pride another excuse to have this linger on with no substance.
