View Full Version : Question About The Rogers Signing and Loss of Smoot?

Let me get this straight. I don't know the particulars of how Rogers's 11 mill is broken down but Smoot was let go because he wasn't gonna get more than Shawn Springs. This was the reason given for Smoots' departure. Now Rogers is gettiing 11 mill guranteed. Now pardon my math but isn't Rogers's 11mill more than the 10 mill that Springs got last year? I've been curious as to how much guranteed money Rogers was gonna get. Now Smoot coulda been offered the same thing and the Skins coulda drafted another need. Why get rid of Smoot who coulda signed for what Rogers got? Again I question the management of this team. They contradict themselves all the time. They (Skins Organization) said Springs is the best CB and Smoot wasn't gonna get more than him. Why then is Rogers getting more than Springs, if the Skins believe that logic?

$11m in bonus money, not guaranteed money. Some of that will be in the form of roster bonus money that he'll never see because he'll be likely to have an extension by then. The #9 pic does not get $11m in guaranteed money, so read a little before going off first.

Edit: His roster bonus money will probably be converted into guaranteed money come renegotiation time, but that's still at least 2-3 years away.

If the Skins gave Smoot $11M, they'd be giving both Smoot and the 9th pick that much. By letting Smoot go, they are only giving the 9th pick (Rogers) $11M and used the $11M they didn't give Smoot on several other players.

You also have to consider that roger's potential is far greater than smoot's. Smoot has basically reached the peak of his ability. He's small, whiffs on sacks, and often leaves a lot of space off the line in coverage. Rogers is a much more physical cover corner, and I think the coaching staff believes he can become a far greater corner than smoot, and is worth a little bit extra.

Dam i love Smoot but i couldnt have said it better myself. i just couldnt bear to watch when i seen number 21 coming off the corner to blitz. Thats the reason i believe GW sent Shawn Springs more as the season went on.

good call

plus I think GW saw an oppertunity to bring in a younger CB that better fit his physical defense

Rookies are always gonna get more money upfront than veterans who aren't superstars.

Look at Alex Smith. He's making more money than probably everyone except for Manning.

Guys... he's not getting $11m up-front. I don't think the organization has actually reported what his signing bonus is. The #9 pick in the draft doesn't get that much up-front.

I liked smooty. but the poster who noted that he allowed too much space between himself and the receiver, particularly in the red zone, was correct. rogers has a bigger upside - he won't be thrown into the maw like smoot was as a rook...but he will be a more complete CB.

You know buddy by saying this you got me thinking that Gregg Williams made the decision on to keep Smoot. He loves big physical corners that can blitz and tackle well and lets face it Smoot was average at best on those two skills.

also, overall salary may be much lower or incentive based. Taylor apparently has a 14 million signing bonus, but his base overall salary is like 18 million over 7 years I believe, with incentives up to 40. Smoot would have wanted more salary money up front as well. Rogers base salaries are going to be much less than Smoots would have been or are now in Minnesota.

$13m in bonus money, but his actual signing bonus was closer to $7m, IIRC. That's the only portion guaranteed.

Edit: Taylor actually got a $7.2m signing bonus, according to NFL.com. The #9 pick in the draft doesn't command even that much up-front.

it sucks that we lost smooty. he will be missed no doubt. great skill and awesome heart.

it is my understanding that minnesota was able to guarantee more money over the 1st two or 3 years to smooty and the skins were unable (or unwilling) to match.

it still stings.

i hope this rookie is all he's hyped up to be. and i hope his foot is a non-issue come midseason.
