View Full Version : Can a man pull off a pink shirt?
Westbrook36
August-8th-2005, 01:00 PM
I have been discussing this recently with some friends of mine. It seems society is hellbent on telling us what is "gay" for a man to wear when, in reality, it's only a color, imo.
In all honesty, how far is pink away from red? Many guys wear red without shame.
I wore a pink shirt and pink tie with a three piece navy pinstripe suit to a wedding a few weeks ago and I don't remember having any urges to blow and of the guys that were there.
What say you?

Pink is the new hot color amongst some hip hop heads.
Seen it a lot of late. Yes, a man can pull off pink. Hell, even when Malibu's Most Wanted came out, the character wore a pink dominant outfit.
I believe before the turn of the century, pink was a boy's color.

I have one pink Nautica shirt, but it really depends on your skin tone. If you have a darker complection you can pull it off fine without causing too much mess. No one has ever made any derrogatory comments about me wearing pink, anyway.

Pink is pretty money. Dress shirts, ties, polo shirts in pink work well. I'm also a fan of yellow and light blue as well.
I don't, for some reason, think pink works on tshirts.

I hate pink. I find it ridiculous that it is "in". 3 years ago, if people were asked "would you wear pink", 99% would say HELL NO. Suddenly, some fashion designer says it's cool for men to wear pink, and everyone's got a pink shirt now. Personally, I find trendy crap lame anyways.

It probably depends on the color - if a man wears pink, it tends to be understated, or "salmon," as someone mentioned. I believe that hot pink would raise some eyebrows, but I see lots of pinkish ties and shirts worn by men. They tend to be more pastels then anything else. (Ok, I do some work with web design, so I have to know my pastels. :-P)
That being said, I don't care for pink, so I'll never wear it.

Really though, I've seen businessmen wearing pink shirts for a long time. It's always been popular, just recently though people have seen it in hip hop videos and stuff and it's had a rebirth....its always been popular.

I personally can't pull it off. My ex girlfriend found guys in pink shirts irresistable, so bought me three or four of them. I never thought I looked very good in them though. But whenever I go out to Ft. Lauderdale I see at least 40-50 guys with some sort of pink on their shirts. Of course Ft. Lauderdale is probably the trend capital of the nation.

I love purple - it's a great color. One of my favorite shirts is a purple button down, and it goes well with anything.
That does not mean you'll ever catch me wearing any Ravens' colors. :-P

It all depends on (a) what you look like (b) where you live (c) where you go. If you are comfortable in your masculinity, you live in a cosmopolitan metropolis and you work/socialize in white collar places, then pink can easily be pulled off in fact you just might be, dare I say, hip. Most colleges are also ok for pink. But if you are just a bit on the pretty side, you live in North Platte, Nebraska, work in construction and go to your local pool hall on Friday nights, well, I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that blue might be a better choice for your shirt color. Unless you enjoy catching flack all night long.
Of course, if anyone gives you a hard time about your pink oxford at the Double Down Saloon, just explain your views on homosexuality. I'm sure that will work out just great.

I think its a confidence thing; at least it was for my ex. She said a guy in a pink shirt had to be extremely confident, and that is sexy to a girl. Nowadays, since it is becoming trendy, I think it will lose some of its power. Guys are no longer wearing it to show their self-confidence, but to be trendy.
But hey, as long as it gets their attention, right? ;)

Pink shirts and/or ties are fashionable for men. Personally, wouldn't wear one. I'm too old fashioned and conservative.
Took me years to wear an Izod shirt, because all the preps
wore them.
Westbrook, my wife has been after me to get a pink shirt and like others have said, most women like it on men. My wife felt it was
a miracle to get me to wear a dark blue or burgandy dress shirt...since 90% of my dress shirts are white.
Listen, live on your wild side! Get a burgandy shirt and wear with
a gold tie! Now that is style!

As I understand it, pink is close to brown. Faeries hate blue but love pink. They would not kidnap a baby wrapped in blue but like ones in pink (or earth colors), so in pagan times, you used to wrap up your boys in blue so they wouldn't get kidnapped and your girls in pink so they would.

True it may be a societal barrier that has dictated my sense of fashion, but I still don't feel differently. Pink, right or wrong, is symbolic of femininity and softness. A symbol that I choose not to display..... :2cents:

I'm married but I get all kinds of compliments from the ladies when I rock pastels and other interesting colors. It's how you accessorize and "coordinate".

Well, isn't it society telling you it's fashionable to wear pink? I mean seriously; if it wasn't cool to be wearing pink, would you ever do it? Did you have the guts to do it 2 years ago when NOBODY was wearing it? If you enjoy the color so much, why didn't you do it before? Because you were embarassed to. Yep. Been known to own a few in my day. Have one right now that though not truely pink, ( it's just a little darker shade), it's close enough to be considered pink I think. At least for the sake of debate here. And it was picked out by a woman who I assure you has good taste in clothes and knows what she likes in, ( or in this case on), men. I've never had a problem with wearing pink or something close to it, and coincidentally none of the women I've been out with did either. That's a good thing. :)

Guys look GREAT in pink when the style is crisp and masculine which is to say a nice button-down, polo or oxford. Once you put on a pink t-shirt, wife-beater, or some soft fabric or (god-forbid) fur, you've gone too far.

I wore a pink shirt and pink tie with a three piece navy pinstripe suit to a wedding a few weeks ago and I don't remember having any urges to blow and of the guys that were there.\
I'm trying to invision how that would work together, but I think it's good.
F*ck it man, take chances. I bought a couple pink shirts a couple years ago, but now that seems to be the "cool" color for yuppie guys to wear, so I've retired my pink, button down shirt.
However...Do you really want to look like everyone else? You wanna run up in somewhere wearing a black/blue/grey/brown suit with a white shirt and some predictable tie? No way...If you wanna wear pink and it works for you, go for it!
I definately think it works better on people of a darker skin tone...but some of us crackers can pull it off too...

A guy can pull off a pink shirt, if he's lifting it over the head of the girl who's wearing it. But for white guys at least, wearing pink has always been a bad idea. Sorry, fellow whities -- Pink is a girl color.
I love this idea that white guys wearing pink before it was "popular" somehow were less stupid. It looks dumb. It always looked dumb. It looked like you were raiding your little sister's closet then, and it continues to look like you're raiding it now.
As for not showing up in a "standard" black/blue suit... Yeah. Pink is clearly the answer to that conundrum. Surely you won't look dumber in that matching pink button-down and pink/blue tie than you would if you just got a good looking suit in any other color than black or blue.
Guys with dark skin can make pink work, because the skin tone and shirt color actually complement each other. But it doesn't work for white guys. And you guys who religiously tan, naturally or artificially, or wear makeup or whatever the hell you do to look like Oompa-Loompas, aren't exempt. Wearing pink with your artificially brown-orange skin makes you look like a bridal bouquet. Congratulations, big guy.
I work in Boston's financial district and see this mistake constantly. It has been going on for at least seven years up here in full force, and it looked no less dumb in 1999 than it looks now. White guys trying to look "different" yet businesslike by rocking the pink shirt. What a disaster. They look like tools. Their outfits scream, "I'm an entry-level analyst, not yet important enough to actually meet clients and therefore allowed to wear guy-pink in the portfolio management office. Additional oversubscribed conformity pending..."
If you're going to dress differently in an attempt to stand out while sitting at your standard-issue desk located inside a bland cube nested shoulder-to-shoulder inside a larger bland cube inside a giant bland box with windows that you can't see out of because you sit in the back, you could at least pick something that looks good on you. Pink isn't it.
Then you see an older guy with darker skin who obviously knows that pink actually works for him and has for decades. And the shirt looks good. It genuinely looks good.
But wear whatever you want -- the world needs entertainment. I think the man-purse may be making a comeback too, if you want to give that a try. You know, to be different.

I'm surprised by the number of neanderthals that believe a man's maculinity is directly related to the color of his shirt. I suppose if a women isn't in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant, she isn't a real woman either.
Oh, and if your color choices are driven by what's trendy, either by following the trend or specifically going against it, are you not still a slave to it? I say wear whatever makes you feel comfortable regardless of what anyone else thinks or is doing. Think for yourself!

Yes, he can pull it off, he can pull it off, throw it in the fire and then be smacked around for even thinking he can pull it off.

I have a pink straight collar button down. It goes nicely with one of my blue suits. I tend to judge my fashion sense by compliments i get from women. Judging by that, I pull it off just fine.
But if you have to ask other people if you can pull it off.......you cant.

You can wear pink and be strait PROVIDED:
1. You dont wear earings
2. You dont have a tribal arm tatoo
3. you dont have frosted/dyed hair
4. No pouka shell/hemp necklaces
5. You dont wear a hat cocked to the side/backwards
In all honesty it dosent matter if you are wearing a pink shirt or not. Just don't do any of the abover.

It's doable. You just have to have enough personal style to pull it off. That, or be a fratboy. In which case you look like a douchebag anyway, so why the hell not wear a pink shirt?

depends on your style and on your skin tone..
Ive seen plenty of brothers that can pull it off. the occasional white guy can as well.
If your skin really falls anywhere in the melatonin spectrum between these two, good luck.
I have an olive-esque complexion and it looks horrid on me.

You either have to be black or pale. Otherwise it looks ridiculous.

Can a man pull off a pink shirt?
Of course he can. In fact, I'd say the fellas at the bath house will be urging him to do so.
