View Full Version : Red Dawn
The Evil Genius

Remember that movie? Wolverines!
So I am watching it last night for the first time since college - it was on Spike by the way - and when the boys (and girls - the "heirlooms") are listening to the radio back at camp - the following message comes on...
The voice says something like...to our american brothers in the occupied territory...
"The chair is against the wall. John has a long mustache"
What the hell? Is that an easy code to decipher? Am I missing something?
Anyone know what that message means? I have read that it possible was used by the French in WWII to mobolize troops when the americans landed on the Normandy beaches...but I don't know if thats an urban legend or not.
Does anyone know if this message has any meaning? Or is pure hollywood fabrication?
BTW - I though Red Dawn was going to be cheesy when I watched it again - and yeah - in some parts it was - but on the whole - I still find it entertaining (if not silly).

Red Dawn was a product of its time (Cold War). In that context, it's somewhat more plausible.
I think the codes are pure Hollywood fiction.

Actually there were times where codes were used to get the message over the airwaves to "friendlies" behind enemy lines. As far as John having a long mustache, well I am sure that was not one of them..:)

To quote Maynard James Keenan... "Watch Red Dawn and imagine us as the russians...."
Seriously, that was a really good movie.

The scene at the beginning where the teacher gets shot was just cool/disturbing...

In short, Russia and China invaded the US and occupied a large portion of the country.
The movie was about how a group of high school kids set up a resistance and used guerrilla tatics to hinder the enemy.
It was a very personal story and well worth watching.

The coded message sent by the BBC to French Resistance on the eve of D-Day was in two parts. The first was sent on 6/4..it was the first line from a poem by French poet Verlaine.
_What have you done, o you there
Endless weeper,
Thew second messsage on 6/5 was
"It is hot in the Suez"

Watch The Longest Day and you will see how those codes worked during the invasion of Normandy. "John has a long mustache" is actually in that movie, too.

I was watching it last night and my wife says to me, "This movie is gay." Granted, there were some cheesey scenes, like when Patrick Swayze visits his father in the "re-Education" camp. But still. What an awsome movie.

How could you forgt this oscarworthy dialogue between Patrick Swayze and Powers Boothe-
Jed Eckert: Well, who *is* on our side?
Col. Andy Tanner: Six hundred million screamin' Chinamen.
Darryl Bates: Well, last I heard, there were a billion screamin' Chinamen.
Col. Andy Tanner: There were.

LOL.. I remembered that(but couldn't remember the "who's on our side part"), but I thought it was in reference to us knocking off of a bunch of them...
Oh well, I'll have to re watch it this weekend... :paranoid:

Kilmer is right, the story had cuba and nicaruaga invade us first and then russia came in through alaska. Kilmer was also right about china being on our side.
"who is on our side?"
"600,000,000 screaming china men"
"last I heard there was a billion screaming china men"
(a look is given to say "figure out why they are on our side")
I watched too last night on spike, I really liked the movie when it came out and I was suprised too to find out that I still liked it.
edit: damn it, remlik beat me to it

Never seen this, but I've always wanted to. There's a pretty cool video game just like it called Freedom Fighters. It's all about the Soviets taking over the US, and a group of freedom fighters (in NYC in the game) fight back.

The Russians, Cubans, Mexicans, and other Central and South American communist countries invade the US after selective nuke strikes on the US.
The US and Chinese have a defense pact where as if the Russians attack the US the Chinese would nuke the Russians along their border with them. The Russians nuke the Chinese in return resulting in 400 million dead Chinese.

Buddy, you started it and you made it personal to Liberty. Then you piled on with that photo and talk about his "insurgent relatives." Which is pretty ha ha funny, especially since Liberty is Iranian- American.
All signs point to you being a flaming jerk.

Back to the movie guys :)
My favorite line:
(Powers Boothe) 'Kid - all that hates gonna burn you up.....'
(Kid) 'Keeps me warm!'
Its a cheesy movie, no doubt, but still fun. Love the Russian paratroopers landing at the High School.....

I believe that the movie's premise of the invasion was based, ( I have no idea to what degree), on studies done at the time about American weaknesses or how they could be exploited or something like that. Went in saw it in the theaters when it came out down in Homestead. Remember there was a hush as the place emptied. Then debates started outside. Ah the days of the Cold War.

Red Dawn might have been the last thrust for American propaganda, now all propaganda is party based. The 60's and 70's beat our propaganda into pulp that the WWII era wouldnt be able to recongize.
We will get crushed in the propaganda war, but atleast we will be able to say that we only spread propaganda for internal political reasons.
