not our moss, thank goodness...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2137525

NEW YORK -- Oakland Raiders receiver Randy Moss admits he has used marijuana since entering the NFL seven years ago and still smokes it "every blue moon."

"I have used, you know, marijuana ... since I've been in the league," Moss said in an interview for HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" scheduled to air Tuesday night. "But as far as abusing it and, you know, letting it take control over me, I don't do that, no."

When pressed whether he still smokes marijuana, the star receiver with the checkered past said: "I might. I might have fun. And, you know, hopefully ... I won't get into any trouble by the NFL by saying that, you know. I have had fun throughout my years and, you know, predominantly in the offseason.

"But, you know, I don't want any kids, you know, watching this taking a lesson from me as far as 'Well, Randy Moss used it so I'm going to use it.' I don't want that to get across. Like I say ... I have used [marijuana] in the past. And every blue moon or every once in a while I might."

The NFL's drug policy calls for up to 10 tests a month after one positive result. A second violation results in a fine equal to the player's salary for four games, a third in a four-game suspension, and a year's suspension for a fourth violation.

Moss has never been suspended for violating the league's drug policy and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said it is confidential whether the receiver is in the drug program or not.

"We evaluate all conduct related to substance abuse and it is handled confidentially by the doctors," Aiello said.

Moss was traded from the Minnesota Vikings in early March. He was limited by a hamstring injury last season and finished with 49 catches for 767 yards and 13 touchdowns. It was the first time in his seven seasons that he didn't reach 1,000 yards receiving.

Moss has had problems on and off the field throughout his college and pro career. He lost scholarships at Notre Dame and Florida State because of a battery charge and marijuana use. He set records at Marshall and clearly was the most dynamic receiver in the 1998 draft, but lasted until 21st overall because of his past trouble.

Last year, Moss was fined $10,000 for pretending to pull down his pants and moon the Green Bay crowd during Minnesota's playoff win. He also drew criticism for leaving the field with 2 seconds left in a regular-season loss against Washington.

Other transgressions include bumping a traffic control officer with his car in 2002, verbally abusing corporate sponsors on a team bus in 2001 and squirting an official with a water bottle in 1999.

Raiders' wide receiver says he uses drug 'every blue moon'

I don't see the big deal here. So he smokes a joint every once in awhile, WHO CARES?

The fact it is against NFL policy is the one reason he probably shouldn't be doing it at all, but as far as everyday people is it really that big of a deal?

I think the big deal is it violates the NFL's drug policy. So now you have a player admitting to using the drug, and perhaps becoming a target for testing. Just seems like a stupid thing to admit publicly...to me anyway.

Yep, same goes for the Federal Government.

The drug war is out of control. The punishment should fit the crime. Regulations should reflect actual dangers of substance in question.

Smoking weed is like a game to him. He hasn't been caught. Yet. And when he finally does get caught it will be no big deal to him. He will play his weed smoking game again. He doesn't care what the NFL thinks and neither do the Raiders. Moss sells tickets. His job in Oakland is to perform. if Al Davis is willing to put up with the "occasional" smoking then let him.

Thats exactly what I think about this news. Who cares??!!

If it was Santana Moss, I wouldn't care as long as he doesn't fail the drug test, and as long as it does not affect his performance on the field. Since neither are the case for the other Moss, it really is not a big deal.

I guess that I'm the only one that is a little irked. I realize pot is not a big deal. I realize its common place in today's society. Other than its legality, I don't make a distinction between booze and grass....but legality issues and their impacts count in court.

The only problem I have with Moss' public admission is "why"?

Has he forgotten he's in the entertainment business? Doesn't he know that kids wear his jersey and see his endorsements. I know it's passe, but being paid millions also incurs some public responsibility and accountability.

I don't care that he smokes...I just care that he is so cavalier about it, and I do care what my kids see. The announcement wasn't necessary. He doesn't have to go out of his way to be a jackass. He should keep his vices private.

Well stated. I don't think smoking is that big a deal either, but leave the kids out of it.

If you want to smoke, do it. But when your cashing the big checks and in the public eye, you have an obligation to both your employers and a moral obligation to the little ones that look up to you.

Smoking pot won't hurt his livlihood any, but it will hurt the kids who are just trying to grow up in very difficult environments.

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

Who cares whether he smokes. I dont and none of us do either. Why would he put his business in the streets like this ? Unreal.

This man is making millions of dollars to play a sport that requires you to be drug free for a few years. After his NFL career is over he can smoke everyday. Why jeopardize that for a little high ?

He can get drunk everyday if he wants as long as it doesnt get him into any legal situations and as long as he doesnt show up to work drunk or miss work because of it. And its legal.

What an idiot ... leaving games early, running over female cops in his car, openly admitting that he takes many plays off during a game when he is just the decoy or he isn't needed, mooning paying fans, and now he admits to getting high.

I hope that he is good friends with Onterio Smith so that he can get some masking products for his urine tests, because the NFL would be crazy to not coincidentally target him more often on random tests.

The bigger problem is the way the players Union CBA is written ... the NFL can't just test him because he declares that he has done it ... they have to actually catch him with a positive drug test. This is one of the reasons the Cowboys got in trouble for releasing Quincy Carter.

What trouble did the Cowboys get into ?

I remember there being speculation that they would get into some kinda situation with the players association, but I cant recall anything ever becoming of it.

Personally, I think the NFL protected Bill Parcells/Jerry Jones in that case and it was a cover-up. Not much about the whole thing made any sense.

Guy wins 10 games and takes a 3-peat 5-11 team to the playoffs.

Then the following season just before the season starts he is released ?

Not traded ? Not demoted for better talent ? But released ?

Hmmm....

Speculation everywhere about him having a positive test. Yet he is able to sign with the Jets without any such mention of this failed test ?

Something doesnt add up.
