 IS ANYONE LISTENING TO MIKE AND MIKE IN THE MORNING?!? Geezus...can these guys be anymore negative?! This is the epitome of the media nonsense most of us have talked about! I wish I had the whole Talk to insert here, but here are some of the "highlights:"
"I think they're the 4th team in the NFC East"
"It'll be a battle for last place"
"We both give 'em 7-9"

Top 5 questions facing WASH:
5. Is Lavar Arrington washed up?
Golic said he thought he might be, guessed that he could be wrong.
4. Is Clinton Portis the right back for this system?
Golic said he thought that the running game might be better because of Musgrave's contribution.
3. Is the quarterback position a mess?
They both agreed that the position is a mess. They both said that they don't know what WASH has in mind at the QB position.
2. I think another question was whether the game had passed Gibbs and his mature staff bye.
Golic thought that the staff would be better, but not significantly.
Can't remember some of the others, but they both felt that WASH was once again probably the #4 team in the division. That there were also some winnable games outside the division. IE. San Fran, Seahawks, Bears, Bucs. Greenberg was jocking Coles' reacquisition by the Jets, and said that Moss is injury-prone, and that the JETS should have had on a mask when the trade was made (ie. WASH was robbed) because Coles is a FAR superior player to Moss.

Yeah, i caught most of the Mike & Mike preview as well. Greeny did say it's no one in football that he respects more than Gibbs and they both agreed that if we get off to a good start (i.e.4-2), than we might be headed for big things. They both still picked us to go 7-9 and battle the Giants for last place in the division.
IMO, i believe their comments were fair cause they're lookin at it as analysts, not as fans like we are. So the points they made for their opinions were valid and shouldn't be taken with a hostile view towards them.
BTW, Greeny said he developed a good liking towards the Skins and doesn't want them to do bad, partly because he is cool with Cerrato and he was going to mention something else, but Golic inadvertantly cut him off.

don't expect too many 'prognosticators' and analysts to go out on much of a limb with the skins.....we looked ugly last year and followed it up with an uglier offseason.
we can be hopeful all we want, but most non-skin fans are probably thinking that -- until they see a reason we will be much different than the 6-10 deadbeat offensive team from last year (read: not much evidence to the contrary at this point) -- then there's no reason to predict grand improvements.
i'm hoping for a nice, long overdue turnaround....but right now i can't really disagree with their 7-9 predictions.

I love to see how these (and other so called "experts") are going to spin this when we make the playoffs. I bet it will be something like.....well yea I mean look at last year who would have thought SD would be 12-4 etc etc...they didn't show much so how were we suppose to know...etc etc.
What a bunch of crap. This team has ALOT of talent but it has not played as a team. But looking at it from last year's perspective of all the NFC East teams other than the Eagles naturally the skins were in EVERY GAME. We didn't get blown out like Dallas did and certainly the Giants when we were one of the teams doing the "blowout". We were in every game but for a stupid (of a BS) penalty, a turnover or a bad play were the difference. That is why I am so pissed off with these "experts". I mean just looking at last year the skins were the second best team in the NFC east and at the very least playing together under the same coaching staff on both sides of the ball should make these idiots a bit skeptic about where are they going with their predictions.

The problem, as it usually is, the media has selected a number of pet teams this year. Minnesota, Arizona, Dallas and even Detroit. Yet, if you were to ask questions about each team, you'd find that in each case the questions in every other pet team are far greater than they are for us. Ours is just so much more glaring with Ramsey and compares to the Lions with Harrington.
While no one believes Bledsoe is all that great anymore, he is a solid vet capable of some very good play. Warner is a former MVP of the league. Culpepper is great. Though Warner and Bledsoe have been rather like Ramsey as players, they have proven something in the league so it's easier to envision them playing better than it is for Ramsey.
A 7-9 to 9-7 Redskin team if healthy is one where Ramsey does not really improve at all. That's pretty much what it means.
Gibbs has already improved. Watch the games and notice the play clock and play calling. See how much more crisp it already shows to be in the preseason. See how rarely the clock goes to below five seconds where last year we were horrible in this area. Gibbs is already showing signs of getting his mind right and having his coaching legs more under him than last year.
You see receivers running wide open now where you didn't see that last year hardly at all and certainly with no regularity, even in the preseason. Gibbs has to get through to guys on the turnover aspect of things, but, the questions about Gibbs are essentially meaningless given what we know about him as a coach and what he's already shown this year as a coach to demonstrate improvement in bad areas from a year ago.
Gibbs will continue to get better as well. As he continues to understand the players and be able to exploit things more effectively he'll get better each game he coaches in this stint. If Ramsey can get better too the "experts" will have a lot to consider as to how the Redskins couldn't be seen as a pet team by them. If Ramsey doesn't, well, they won't have to worry about their abilities in this area at all.
The difference between most fans of this team and the media is we understand where the average or below average team comes from in the minds of the media and we can see how it can happen. The media can't see how anything better could happen, which is a flaw in their ability to think.

Well it is ESPN radio so I dont know why you would expect nothing less.
Bottom line until we get some wins under our belt and beat Dallas we will be the guy with the Allerges and the Bi-focals getting kicked around by the rest of the leauge and the media.

They can say what they want. Everything they said, except for the part about the QB situation is a mess, is understandable. I don't like what they said about the QB situation being a mess because they're reason is total BS. "We don't know what the Skins have in mind for the QB position", therefore it's a mess. Last time I checked, Mike and Mike aren't the coaches or GMs, nor is it Gibbs' responsibility to explain to them his plan for the QB. If they at least said it's a mess because they don't see much in Ramsey, Brunell is washed up in their opinion, and Campbell is just a rook, then it'd be a legit answer. But to say it is a mess because they don't know what Gibbs is thinking is BS, I always hated that kind of reasoning by "analysts". Either give a legit reason, or just simply say you don't know what they're thinking.

I have absolutely no problem with being picked to finish last in the NFC East, an flying under the radar...I expect Kevin Wheeler at Sporting News radio to do the same tomorrow EARLY am during his NFC East preview show.
Let the Skins sneak up on teams a bit in the early season. Give me 4-4 at the halfway point, and with the ridiculously easy second half schedule, the Skins are shoo-ins for the playoffs.

Getting into a huff about what ESPN says about the Redskins is the same as getting upset about what CNN says about Republicans or FOX NEWS says about Democrats. We should all expect the arrogant bias by now. And, yes, it is even there with their pet boy, Dan Patrick.

seriously, can anyone really say that any of the other teams in the nfc east looks that much better than us right now? the eagles won't have last year's success w/ the TO situation going on. eli has to have a super breakout season for the giants to succeed. the cowboys will have to rely on a new qb. they all look questionable. it's anybody's division. anyone who says otherwise is either an idiot or a super loyal fan.
by the way, we're gonna take the division...and i'm not an idiot.

I thought it was coming on at nine, oh well.
Did anyone here Buffalo's? They both picked them to compete with the Jets for second place, and if New England drops off, then the Bills could steal the division.
The reason? They have a top ranked defense. They said if Losman is decent, then the Bills will be a playoff team.
Isn't that exactly the same as Washington?
I usually don't get mad about these things, but the fact that Buffalo & Washington are in the same boat, but Buffalo will be good & the Redskins will suck is just a joke.

It's funny that this surprises or annoys people.
What would the media base a Redskin resurgence on? Our 0-2 preseason record where our offense (despite showing improvement) still seems to struggle?
I am confident about this year, but mostly because of some intangibles that I wouldn't expect someone from the national media to catch. So, if we do have an uprising this season, it SHOULD be viewed as something akin to what the Chargers did last year. It would be a surprise since we've struggled for 12 or 13 years now no matter who we've added/cut/hired as our coach...
Just my opinion.

I have a problem with what you just said...
Eagles wont have the same success w/ the TO situation. I mean as much as I dislike them, you know they went to the NFC final game 3 straight years WITHOUT TO. McNabb is great, and he gets better every year, and they have one of the most versitale backs in the NFL, Brian Westbrook.
Cowboys are not really that handicapped with Bledsoe. Parcells has coached him before and knows how to push him. Julius Jones is a good running back and it looks like one of thier rookies (Ware) might be an impact rookie like Jevon Kearse was his rookie year.
Giants are a question mark because we really dont know how Eli may be. But fact is, he has Manning blood in him, and has a chance of being I believe as good as his bro, and adding Plexico helps our the WR crew. Can Tiki do the same as last year without fumbling, and with the addition to Pierce, will thier D but much improved?
Skins just have so many question marks, and like Art said, it mostly lies on Patrick Ramsey. I believe we go as far as he goes. Our D is pretty solid, beside the CB posistion, but we all know that if you get a great rush, that will help them out and make them look like ProBowlers.
Overall, I can see how they can say we can be fighting for 4th. We have improved, but how much?

August-25th-2005, 08:42 AM
It comes down to this - The Skins are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
For every other team - the issue for the media becomes: if you sucked last year - you better have made big moves in free agency and the draft or we can't say that you improved. I don't know if it's an ignorant mindset or just the fact that there's much more meat to, a story to talk about if you will, when a team has made a lot of changes. Nobody wants to hear that the Skins have great continuity and show develop a new found chemistry together. Of course, had the Skins turned over their offense - we would have heard the same rhetoric from the haters - there goes Snyder again - trying to buy himself a championship.
The QB position aside, are Dallas, Arizona, and Detroit any better than Washington? No. Are the coaching staffs better? No. Even the QB position is hard to argue as being considerably better off. Harrington has been as uninspiring as Ramsey and Bledsoe and Warner have done nothing but bounce around the league recently. Sheesh.
But let the haters hate. It seems like this team has a chip on their shoulder and that can be a source of motivation.

Dirk, I think you're right that we can't win in the national media. But I think a lot of that comes back to what we've done in the past. We've shown the willingness to spend the money in the offseason, but we've rarely bought the correct pieces to translate into wins. Therefore, at this point, why would anyone who's making predictions go out on a limb and assume we got it right this time?
I agree with you...let's just let everyone assume we'll be bad and surprise them. I truly believe we've turned a corner as an organization. However, I don't expect a bunch of people who technically cover 32 NFL teams to see that.

Art summed up my thoughts on this perfectly. I really could not care any less what ESPN analysts think about the Redskins' chances this year. I have watched enough football to know how much difference the 'little things' make. Clock management and penalties absolutely killed us last year. I'd go as far as to say that those two areas hurt us more than the lack of ability to get the ball downfield, although the three are not mutually exclusive by any means.
Anyone who wathed this team last year and has watched the first two preseason games this year would be blind to have not noticed a clear difference in clock management and penalities from the offense. But here in lies the problem, these analysts have not watched the Skins in the preseason, they are simply going by what they know about last year and what their counterparts have written this year.

Dan Patrick is an egomaniac. I hear his show because it's the only sports radio I can get in my car but I don't like him very much. Mike and Mike's show has so much more energy and flavor. They also keep things moving along. The dead air on Dan's show is almost as bad as Jim Rome's pauses. There were times when Rome was on that I thought I'd lost my reception!

Why would anyone in the media go out and say something good about our team?
They've pumped our teams up for years because of the moves we've made in the offseason, and we continue to suck.
You have to be good for the media to say good things about you.

I've actually stopped listening to WTEM and therefore ESPN Radio and I hardly watch ESPN.
WTEM became unbearable to me so I did the only thing I could do and that's turn it off. There's no other sports station on the radio but I'd rather listen to nothing than continue to listen to those losers.
With NBA TV and NFL Access I have very little need to watch ESPN. The only thing I'm missing is baseball highlights.

M&M picked us to go 6-10 last year. And 6-10 the year before. And they were pretty much right.
I don't have a problem with Mike and Mike. Sure they don't give us the benefit of the doubt, but that's not their job.
We've been lousy for a long time now. It shouldn't shock anyone here that any respect we get now will have to be earned.

we will be 9-10 wins, Moss/Patten are going to be given a nickname, Ramsey will be just fine with 23/14, and as it was said before Gibbs is already better... which will make everyone else better.. but beyond that they got it right ;).

The bottom line the difference between us going 7-9 and 10-6 and fighting for the playoffs is the play from our QB. If we averaged what an extra FG a game last year we would have won enough games to make the playoffs.
This season is all on the QB's. It seems all the analysts have yet to see anything great from that position. I can see where they are coming from. We have seen some great flashes, but have yet to see consistency.
Lets face it I think people like Arizona and Detroit this year because of the strentgh of the divisions. I expect in our division a three way slugfest for 2nd and Philly still on top.

I didn't listen to the show and every time it comes on I'll change it. The reason I do this is because they don't offer any solid analyisis or good inside information. I think they should note some of the improvements that are obvious and are discussed on this board daily. They don't because they really don't know whats going on with this team.
I sincerely hope we slip under the radar.

Huh? Because we surely have proved we are a playoff contending team looking at the past years... We've sucked, they'res no denying we have sucked for so long and you guys expect them to say we're going to be a super bowl contender. I'm sorry but the reality bug has bit me and other fans but completely eluded all the fans who think we're going to be the best team in the NFL. Look i don't want to be a downer but we aren't as good as the pats or the eagles. Its the truth. I mean is this surprising? I also don't see whats the problem of being a underdog. If we kick ass we can always shove this crap back in their faces after the season is done and we're in the playoffs (please god.)
