the Eagles freed him up during a period when teams around the NFL generally don't have any cap room to acquire such a player, they are not stupid. They realize they need Simon to play this year at the franchise tender for the defense to be solid inside.

They don't need him Patterson is impressing everybody and Rayburn and the boys played better than the out of shape pass rusher.

We can't afford him......just hope Dallas or the Giants can't pick him up either.

This could be a big loss for the Eagles, but they have been playing well without him.

Still--- :eaglesuck (I just had to say it ;) )

again, who has a cool $3 million to offer up for Simon at this point of the preseason?

either he plays the one year for the Eagles or he takes a bath financially to move on to another team.

that is the choice that confronts him.

I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Of course, he'll cost more than we can afford right now. Still, given his age and past performance, Williams is a guy who could really provide some motivation to Simon and make him something special. Not that Johnson isn't that type of coach, but, sometimes a tone deafness can develop to some degree and the fit just doesn't work out.

Simon, though, would play the same role as Griffin and therefore is not a great fit for us. This does strike me as a pretty cheap move by the Eagles, and, if done by the Redskins, would be evil Danny Snyder screwing over a player :).

chow184

Griffin was a bum for the Giants the year we signed him...

if he deadicated himself we would have a great interior pass rush on our D line and that would likely put the D over the top.

Not really cheap but smart. Corey didn't sign the tag and didn't report to camp why pay somebody 5.1mill or whatever it was when he most likely will come in out of shape and half the player he was 2 years ago.

true,he does play the same role, but I would say Griffin was attracting more double teams than whatever nose tackle we had playing(Noble&'Salvea).I would think Griffin could probably handle the roll as NT .(NT's line up over the guard and center in the 4-3, for the uninformed)

How is it a cheap move? He wanted way too much money (as far as a long term deal goes) for a guy who hadn't played well the past two years. He then wouldn't sign the tender. He couldn't agree to terms with either Baltimore or Cincy when the Eagles had agreed to trade him. Why pay someone $5.1 to come to camp a week before opening day, fat and out of shape?

There are teams out there with the cap space, but those teams are the ones that rarely write the big check required to sign an impact player. This dude turned down $5.1 million. He ain't signing for anywhere near the veteran minimum. He'll either get a big deal or he'll sit out the year.

same could be said of Cornelius Griffin on the Giants...

Griffin's lable was not that he was lazy, nor did he ever report or play out of shape ever during his tenure with the Giants.

Simon has made a habit out of 'playing himself into shape' pretty much every season since his rookie year. Add to that he's more of a situational DT, ie. he sucks against the run, and I can see absolutely no way he'd fit on this team.

If he was willing to play for the vet minimum/incentives, he'd be an Eagle. He's not going to turn down 1 year and 5.1 million so he can take the vet minimum. C'mon.

Someone will give him 3-4 million over several years and a decent signing bonus.

Maybe offer vet minimum salary with incentives this year and say 5 mil sb 5 years 30 mil. So around 2 mil this year and a higher salary on the increased cap years or the uncapped year. This way he gets more than the $5.134 million he turned down this year.

Was thinking the same thing.....if we can get him for a contract like that, we would be fools not to take him......I think that other teams are gonna throw out more money then we have.....

Though our Dtackles are coming off a strong season, very strong for Griffin, you never know with injuries and a solid pass rusher like Simon would be a great fit......if there is one department our D lacked in it is sacks...which is more so, Simons forte

Am sure he is extremely pissed at Eagles management, yea he held out because he did not want to sign the fran tag up front, but they know that now teams do not have the money to give the long term deal that he could have gotten earlier......because of this I love him being extremely bitter towards the Eagles.....as lazy as people say he might be.....this game is 90% mental....getting screwed over like that and due to the fact that if the skins were able to sign him he would be in a contact year (cant see if the skins were able to sign him that they would give him a long term contact)....so you are looky at one P'd off player....

Look, if the skins can get him for a one year deal filled with incentives I for one would be extremely happy.....EXTREMELY HAPPY.....but I doubt that will happen.....but i highly doubt he will sign with the Eagles

The Eagles allowed him to negotiate with teams for contract terms. The Ravens and Bengals worked out trades with the Eagles and he insisted on 5-6 million per season. He's got no one to blame but himself.

Not that he would be the first player to illogically blame management.

There is drama in the idea we have a stellar/reputable defense someone can shine in and we are now a CONTENDING division rival.

If he agreed to our terms and decided to spite Philly is the only way something like this works.

"“Initially the asking price was extremely high because I wanted to stay in Philadelphia,” Simon told Gunn. “I wasn’t really trying to ask for a price that teams were willing to jump at the time because I always wanted to remain optimistic that we could find a deal that would work for myself and the Eagles.

“All of this was based on me solely wanting to play in Philadelphia, and that’s the only place I wanted to be. That’s why I never struck a deal with anybody else. My heart wanted to be in Philly.”

Trotter was a failure in coaching. Lewis was arrogant and, frankly, stupid for pushing to acquire Trotter then not letting him BE Trotter. Edwards didn't know any better. Williams has an experienced staff of very smart coaches who design a system to fit the players they have. They identify what their players can do and ask them to do that, rather than asking them to do the things they can not do.

I doubt they'd take Simon given how close he is to Griffin in terms of role along the defensive line, but, we should not doubt Williams will figure out how to use a guy like Simon in a way that allows him to be a better player.

yes, he was third in sacks on the team, but in a d that spreads them around, his 5 1/2 sacks will come from somewhere else.

Philly fans will get attacked now for towing the company line, but I fail to see how this guy is the second coming. At least two other teams offered him $5 mil per season to facilitate a trade, and he turned it down.

BINGO! Do not take the Eagles defensive cast aways. They have a system similar to ours where the players will not produce nearly as well in a different system. Hugh Douglas, Trotter, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent...
I'll give you an example.. Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent would float in and out of the probowl roster. Now they are on diff teams and are all but non existent. Lito Shepard has now made the pro bowl. You mean to tell me in this day and age or salary disputes and salary cap problems the Eagles can plug in a CB and have him make the pro bowl??? H*ll no. CB is one of the elite positions that teams covet... and one of the most expensive positions to pay a good player. There arent SPARE PROBOWL CB's lying around to pick up.

But the Eagles had 3 different probowl CB's n 3 years ???(and Sheldon Brown made a case statistic wise for himself that he could have attended the probowl and be the 4th) Bull! The Eagles D is a team D that relies on every player on the field filling their role/responsibility -- heavy blitzing and forcing turnovers is the name of the game. The secondary really benefits from the attack of the D-Line and LB's. Any half-decent CB can benefit from playing in Jim Johnson's schemes.
The only QB's that I've seen to really expose the Eagles D were Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
Anyway, take their players away from Philly and their abilities vanish.
He'd do fine under Greg Williams' system, but we don't need him, his contract disputes, or his work ethic.

We need a pass rushing DE!

You have to take "stats" with a grain of salt. Sometimes, good players can make plays. And sometimes, good players make other people around them better.

Look at Mike Rucker in Carolina after Julius Peppers arrived. Look at Sean Ellis in NY even though I'd still take John Abraham.

geez, isn't that what we just what we got out from under by bringing Gibbs back here and getting rid of some guys over the past few years that had leeched us of dollars? :)

Corey Simon to me could be a potential Dana Stubblefield. A guy 26 or 27 coming off of a Super Bowl team who is looking for a big paycheck. The question as with Stubby is why would the Eagles let him go if he was so irreplaceable?

I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Of course, he'll cost more than we can afford right now. Still, given his age and past performance, Williams is a guy who could really provide some motivation to Simon and make him something special. Not that Johnson isn't that type of coach, but, sometimes a tone deafness can develop to some degree and the fit just doesn't work out.

Simon, though, would play the same role as Griffin and therefore is not a great fit for us. This does strike me as a pretty cheap move by the Eagles, and, if done by the Redskins, would be evil Danny Snyder screwing over a player :).

I think Simon would be a little pissed at the Eagles and would love to sign for another team in the division. We need DL bad, I think this is win/win if we get him. With releasing McCants how much do we get back?

I agree Tom. The Giants SHOULD be pursuing Simon because their defense up the middle is not that strong. I like the Giants skill players on both sides of the ball, but their lines are still a very big question mark.

I see the Redskins having the advantage vs. NY on both sides of the ball up front.

NY isn't going to win many games getting pushed off the ball. Simon will help the team no question.

If the Giants had not given up on Cornelius Griffin, they wouldn't need Simon :)

But I guess when all is said and done we traded Pierce for Griffin. We will have to see long-term who got the better end of the deal.

Both clubs felt the other team overpaid to get their player. Griffin already posted a pro bowl caliber season in 2004 in DC, we will see what Pierce chips in in 2005.

I'd love for the Giants to pick up Simon, their weak middle would only get weaker.

Corey Simon is a fat pig.

Ravens? Corey Simon's attitude would have to improve 1000% for that move to work out

Havent we seen this a million times before? Hopefully he stays out of DC, unless he is willing to play for the minimum

I say williams should definately look at him. This would be another pass rushing threat on the outside. Depending on price, i think he'd be a good pickup, but that's just me

Fuhggettabouhit. Can't afford him. We have very little cap money, and it's always a good idea to keep a little bit open in case of emergency.

I'll second Art and I would take him in Dallas without thinking twice.

I wish the Cowboys would sign him, and eat up there cap. This guy is an absulte horrible fit for them. an undersized Tackle playing Nose? Go Get Him!!! :dallasuck

I agree

its not true he wants a huge huge contract, he was only asking for that kind of money to scare off teams that were interested in trading for him(Simon really wanted to stay in philthadelphia).

hopefully we can get him at a modest contract

Why would we want him??? We don't need him. He would hurt our cap, if we had enough cap space to sign him. Plus, haven't we learned from the past about what happens when we take divisional throw aways.

That sounds slightly more credible than Sean Gilberts claim that God told him to hold out.

Seriously, if he had wanted to stay with the Eagles he would have found a way to come to a compromise. Everything else is just non-sense.

The skins FO will not go after this player. First, we can't afford him and second he doesn't seem to me to be the type of player that Williams wants on his defense. H. Thomas called him lazy and from his current salary demands he seems greedy (yes, many players are), but we don't need a player like that.
