Jackson Blasts Bush Over Katrina Aid
Sep 02 3:48 PM US/Eastern
By DOUG SIMPSON
Associated Press Writer
BATON ROUGE, La.
Racism is partly to blame for the deadly aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, calling President Bush's response to the disaster "incompetent."
"Today, as the President comes to Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi for his ceremonial trip to look at the victims of the devastation, he would do well to have a plan more significant than a ceremonial tour," Jackson said Friday.
"His whole response is unacceptable."
Bush has acknowledged that the federal response has not been acceptable, but promised that the government would get supplies to survivors and crack down on violence in New Orleans.
Jackson questioned why Bush has not named blacks to top positions in the federal response to the disaster, particularly when the majority of victims remaining stranded in New Orleans are black: "How can blacks be locked out of the leadership, and trapped in the suffering?"
"It is that lack of sensitivity and compassion that represents a kind of incompetence."
U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russell Honore, head of the military task force overseeing operations in the three states, is black. His task force is providing search and rescue, medical help and sending supplies to the three states in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Jackson was in Baton Rouge to take part in a local project using a caravan of buses to pick up people stranded in New Orleans and transport them out. He spoke at a news conference at the state emergency center.
The civil rights leader said the flooding that caused thousands to be trapped inside the city was caused by a lack of federal funding for its levee system and hurricane planning. The resulting tragedy, he said, has largely hit New Orleans' black residents, because they were too poor to evacuate before the storm hit.
"There's a historical indifference to the pain of poor people and black people" in this country, he said.
Jackson also said the news media has "criminalized the people of New Orleans" by focusing on violence in the city.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Well gee Jesse, could it be because a majority of the people doing the shooting and sniping and raping are black?
Meanwhile Jesse, why don't you ask the mayor of New Orleans why all the city school buses are sitting under water, when they could have been used to get people out?

I listened to a few left wing radio talk shows today. There seem to be a LOT of people who seem to think that the most important thing they can do in this time of crisis is to get in front of a microphone and criticize the president.
At least after 9/11 people waited until our citizens were out of the immediate danger.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not talking about people asking for an increased federal aid or a faster response. I’m talking about people saying he doesn’t care because impoverished African Americans are the ones primarily in need. Others saying that Bush played a causal role (i.e. this is the result of Bush’s environmental policies... WTF?, or “Bush thought it was more important to give Paris Hilton a tax break than to save the lives of thousands of black people!”. Many of the callers referenced the “coup de ta” (SP?) that got Bush elected twice. I kept thinking, “this is how you expend your energy in a time of tragedy?”
It is sad to see how bad the rhetoric has gotten from both the left and right wing. I’m not a Bush voter, but it seems like some on the FAR left really enjoy blaming tragedies on Bush.

Jesse Jackson sucks. I hate saying this, but I bet he's dancing a jig now that he can call Bush out on something. Never has there been a more opporunistic slimeball in this countries recent history...

Sorry, I have been out of the house most of the day.
When I say this I’m not talking about any posters here because I don’t know how the posters here have even responded, but I sometimes wonder if people who hate Bush get satisfaction when they see bad news.
I wonder if a guy like Michael Moore sees what is happening in New Orleans and starts to get excited about the possibility of an Oscar.

The senate joins the fray --
"Two key U.S. senators said on Friday they will open a bipartisan investigation into what they described as an "immense failure" of the government response to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican who heads the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, and Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, the panel's top Democrat, said they plan to begin an oversight investigation next week when the full Senate returns from a summer recess."

Let me answer the question regarding the school buses.
The school buses in our district were used to help relocate people during hurricane isabel, however, once the hurricane was about 30 minutes away, the buses were parked and the operators were sent to evacuate and protect themselves. Many left town.
Not sure what Jesse is smoking, but it's clear that the people that stayed choose to stay and they made the wrong choice. They have no one to blame but themselves. We went through the same thing with Isabel. I chose to stay, I could have been screwed, but we ended up ok, we knew that when we decided to stay.

Just another civil rights warlord ceasing the opportunity to climb behind the microphone and in front of a camera and make an impassioned plea to.... drum roll please.... fill the civil rights warlord's coffers. Nothing more... nothing to see here.
He's irrelevant, along with Sharpton... Waters.... and the rest of the Black Caucus. Sure the relief has been slow arriving, it's probably a rational argument, but to pull the race card five days into America's worst natural disaster is utterly TREASONOUS! Begin the proccedings.... bring to trial this fraud and his cronies and prepare the gallos. They've simply taken the opportunity to actively work against the will of the American people and help the poor victims of the Gulf Coast... and they should be dealt with swiftly. Effing Left Winger Obstructionists!

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that the Senate looking into why Bush was on vacation for the frist two days of this disaster is completely hypocritical. Especially when compared to the context of their final sentence.

Typical Jackson response, misguided and unhelpful.
And as for his charge that Blacks haven't been named to top positions in Hurricane relief, Bush's chief domestic adviser Claude Allen is playing a major role in spearheading the government's relief efforts and he is black.
But then again, if you ask Jesse, maybe he'd tell you that Black Republicans are not really black...

Some of you are big hypocrites. You'll sit here and bash private citizens, Jesse Jackson/Kanye West, for speaking there minds, as they did concerning Bush, you jump all over them. Why? In other words, you're doing the same thing that their doing. And yes, Bush did drag his feet on this.

Let me get this straight -- when Jesse Jackson or Kayne West say anything, they're speaking their minds. When people say "anything bad about Bush", presumably they are also speaking their minds, correct?
But when other people say things that are contrary to Jackson/Kaynes/Bush-critics, they are NOT speaking their minds, instead they're "jumping all over" the person to whom they are referring or speaking.
Got it. Clear as mud. I know who the hypocrites are now.

This was posted by someone in the ESPN board and I thought it would be worth while to post it here. :applause:
"A few things, first the obvious ones. When the french founded the city, it wasnt below sea level, it has sunk from the weight of the buildings and to coastal erosion because of the loss of the swamps and wetlands that absorbed the erosion.
You can blame every president since Hurricane Besty for the levy system.
You can blame local officials for not planning well for a worst case scenrio.
You can blame Federal goverment for not having enough resources and man power to move into the area. Like the local government they had time to prepare, neither did properly.
You can blame society for letting part of the society suffer in poverty and desperation before the hurricane hit which born the violence towards the rescue workers
You can blame yourself, for if you knew the answers head of time and did nothing, well you failed to do your part. "
As for the "race" comments of this *********, its so called leaders like him that keep this disease called racism in our country. "Its people like him that want African American people in poverty and despair because lets face it he would be nothing without such people"---I put this statement in quotes because is a direct quote by a very good friend of mine who is an African American.

I don't know if this whole affair is racial or not, but I guarantee you that if there were 15,000+ white citizens left to rot in New Orleans, white America would want to have president Bush Impeached.
1+1=2; Its funny that with all the disasters we have endured, the one that involved more blacks is bungled up the biggest. 1+1=2.
......Also INMO The biggest problem surrounding racism is some whites pretend it doesn't exist and some blacks wont let it go.

Why is it that Bush and Republicans get flack for supposedly being anti black, or not caring, or whatever, but the Democrats get a total pass for perpetuating policies that keep blacks undereducated (and therefore poorer, and therefore more likely to be caught in situations like this)?

I completely disagree. They are elected officials whose very job it is to look after the wellfare of their constituents.
This whole game of placing blame is a complete waste of time. There wasn't any grand conspiracy to not respond in a timely manner. I just don't think people have a firm understanding of the scale of the problem.

There is no excuse and since this was the biggest in history it should have been treated as such. Do you agree?
The government sat on their hands before doing anything. There is no defending that. Unexcusable!
The government knew that the storm was coming. Why weren't those 5 ton trucks ready for mobilization at the crack of day.
It may not be racial but this situation certainly leaves room for one to wonder.
