Hes starting out just like last year just about.... season opener rushes for major yards.... then the following weeks kinda slow down.. He is an amazing back with the potential of being the best playing in the league today.. but im a little worried because although the skins have made an effort to go to zone blocking to open up some holes its kinda not going as planned as of yet.. hes avg under 4 yards a game when befor he was avg 5.0 yards a carry i know its early but we have to get clinton going.. hes even put on some to take the pounding and to dish it out. i wanna see him have a streak of 2-3 100 yard games hopefully we will see that this year(understand his carries wont be as much as last year now that hes splitting time with Betts when hes tired) because he is THEY KEY on offense. anyone think we will see him light it up at some point this year?

the announcers of last Sunday's game were right
Portis is now a power runner, and he runs looking to take on hits
he'll get going, no worry there

The Redskin offensive line is still learning the blocking schemes. We have some new faces in there this year that were not her last year or were injured. Once they develop chemistry and can trust each other, then we will see Portis bust big gainers. Patience young buck...patience.

Poris will never have his 'denver' stats ever again for a number of reasons
a) in the nfl of 2005, while having a great running game certainly still works, u can't pound it all day long consistantly every game. why is this? salary cap. Back in the day, the skins often had better line players who stayed in the same system for years compared to most d-lines they faced, and this certainly helped the team out.
b) defenses are quicker than ever
c) defenses will also stack the line against the redskins because, the whole world knows 9/10 times we will run on first down. on that one time we actually pass on 1st down, we'll run on second down. predictable play calling.
d) i know he got 90 yards or so against the seagulls... but how many times did he just blantantly run up against a 'wall of people' fighting for 1 yard or 2... some may call it smash mouth football... i call it retarded play calling on first down.
e-z) defenses will continue to stack the line, regardless of moss... no one cares if he might beat u deep 'once'. They know gibbs is a run first, run second, run third, if all else fails run again, desperation situation, pass type of coach.
The ONLY way things will open up is if the skins mix up their plays better. and that isn't happening anytime soon. (how many pass attempts did brunell have last game? how many of them came on third down? i rest my case)

My 2 cents...
Just because the Skins score 2 TD's against Dallas doesn't mean teams have changed their defensive plans. Seattle had everyone up to the line of scrimmage to stop Portis that's how scared they all are of him.
Denver will do the same if they want any chance at winning because If Portis runs for 100 yards or more it's a guaranteed victory for the Skins.... end of story.
As Brunell looks sharper each week defenses will have to play honest and that's when the Skins canl really start to take off...it ain't gonna happen overnight but it is going to happen.

true that the play calling kinda sucks and is very predictable.. i was at the game and the guy behind me said he wish gibbs wasn't the coach because hes killing the team with the play calling.... i wouldn't go that far but the def need to mix it up... our best drive wasnt just the last drive in OT it was the opening drive where we came away with how many points? 0! i was so pissed.. they really mixed it up on that drive but after that it was like back to the original plan it was fun while it lasted. i heard a kid behind me say noo stop why you keep doing that! referring to those runs in OT on first and 2nd downs that got no where and put them in the 3rd down situations... the runnin game will open up i know it will ill give it till week 7 or 8 to real bust out ...

I have to respond to this one using your letters as reference.
a) Even with the salary cap, all teams have this same issue regarding the OL. Hasnt stopped Denver, San Diego or KC.
b) And offenses arent ? There are twice as many "mobile" QBs in the league now and many more speedy WRs and RBs. Not to mention TEs.
c) I agree somewhat, but that is only because the passing game has not been effective. Unlike the Eagles, who pass to open up the run, most teams run to open up the pass.
d) That happens with most teams that try to establish the run early. Even in Denver Portis started slow usually.
e) Gibbs is the first coach (and possibly only) that had 3 WRs with over 1000 yds in the same year, he helped build the famed Air Coryell attack with Dan Fouts and Kellen Winslow Senior, he is known as a coach that loves to run, but for some reason ignored as a coach that loves to pass.
If you are wondering the reason why people view him as a coach that loves to run, look at how often the Redskins were leading in the second half and that will explain it. Control the clock and keep both their offense off the field and our D rested.
F, if we are grading, self explanatory.

just as long as he isnt frustated, we shouldnt be frustrated.. he cares less about number more about winning. denver gave him big numbers but did they make it big.. with our passing game working, our running should be coming very soon.. due to very speed defenders, these days, passing opens up the O unlike yrs ago running opens it up.. patience is the kay to success....

When you pass four things can happen, only one good. You can complete the pass, you can have an incompletion, you can have a pick, or a sack. I agree you can grab big chuncks of yardage with a pass, but it also doesn't rest your defense. You run and have success and they stack the box, that opens up your passing game. With a back like Clinton, they have to respect the run, but you have to establish that you are going to run to open it up. I have seen inprovement in the passing game, each game, It seemed there was a much better balance of passing and running in the Seattle game.

SkinsandTerps,
You hit a nail about e. Portis splits indicate his strongest carries (in terms of ypc) comes after carry 15. Lets say Portis gets 25 carries for 125 yards, most likely we'll see say 15 carries average only 3 yards and the other 10 make the 80 remaining yards.

no ones saying for gibbs to turn in to mike martz and throw the football every down . just mix the calls up like that first series in the hawks game. and i do believe that the running game will get better once we establish a solid passing game. untill then we may see these problems of up and down weeks continue. Betts is a good changeup to portis and i like that move.

Really?
They obviously are imagining up statistics, then. Looking at the ACTUAL numbers, we've ran the ball 104 times. Of those 104 runs, 11 were Brunell. How many times has Brunell scrambled for the first down this year?
My point is, we've passed it 95 times. Sounds to me like we're a pretty balanced offense, not a run first, second, and third as you would suggest.
Last year we passed 514 times and ran the ball 471.

I don't like how we seemed to have make Portis a power runner. What happened to the Portis I grew to love in Denver, the home run hitter?
We could have just kept Betts if we wanted a power runner. No chance Gibbs gives up all that he did to acquire a home run hitter like Portis just to rebuild him, does he?
