O's Pursuit of Mazzone Is Interrupted

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 19 -- Though it appears the Baltimore Orioles were close to a deal to land Atlanta Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone, talks hit a snag Wednesday that could delay his hiring or temporarily suspend negotiations.

The Braves, according to one baseball source, are asking the Orioles for a prospect in return for Mazzone, whose contract with Atlanta expires Nov. 15. The Orioles could try to sign Mazzone after that date, but it could allow the New York Yankees -- who dropped efforts to sign Mazzone on Wednesday -- back into contention.

"The window for the Yankees to speak with representatives of Leo Mazzone closed today at 5 p.m.," Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said. "Both sides agreed to end their discussions without resolution."

Meantime, the Orioles will announce the hiring of Jim Duquette to a three-year deal for a high-level front office position on Thursday, according to one team source. Duquette will assist Executive Vice President Mike Flanagan, though he will also have decision-making powers. Duquette, who was the New York Mets' general manager in 2004 but was reassigned this past season after the team hired Omar Minaya, met with the Orioles on Wednesday to finalize the deal.

"It was a very positive meeting," Orioles legal counsel H. Russell Smouse said. "He's a guy that's made a very favorable impression on us."

Representatives for Mazzone -- who is close friends with Manager Sam Perlozzo -- and the Orioles are expected to talk again Thursday, but the deal hinges on Atlanta. The Orioles appear unwilling to part with any prospects for Mazzone, but delaying his hiring could cost them dearly if the Yankees get heavily involved again. It's likely Mazzone will command a salary somewhere in the $350,000-to-$450,000 range, which would make him among the highest-paid coaches in the game.

"I really can't comment on it," Flanagan said of the negotiations.

No big deal. The Sun said it isn't a deal-breaker. The Post always has to be over-dramatic about everything. If we don't compensate Atlanta, then we'll just sign him on Nov 15th. He wants to coach with Sam, that's why he broke off talks with the Yanks and appears to be near a deal with the O's.

Yeah this should be no biggy. Like Fatty P said, if Leo does want to be with the skipper, then he'll simply wait. I don't think Leo is about money, or he would have been with the Yanks by now (who overpay everyone). But this all a result of atlanta all of a sudden wanting a prospect, not from Mazzone balking (a pun?).

well, the O's site just states that they haven't agreed on a player yet. I look for them to trade someone away though. This move could really help us get some good pitchers to come to Baltimore, which in turn could bring in some bats when they take a look at our staff and realize they have a good chance to win.

Yeah, that was way out-of-character for you Spiff. You're usually one of the more rational O's posters on here! Especially all things Ponson. I admired how calm, cool, and collected you were in always giving Fat Sidney the benefit of the doubt when no one else would!

We'll let it slip this time since we all know you're typically not an emotional poster!

I'm really not an emotional poster, i usually stay out of the political threads in the tailgate and just make fun of things (or people ;) ) I only get emotional at redskins games but usually the next day I'm fine.

I think I get so emotional here cause we watch the O's continue to suck every day, every summer for the past 8 years and haven't seen much forward progress. When the suckitude is in your face EVERY SINGLE DAY...well, its a bit different...know what i mean?

I was just talking about your O's posts like the one above and the ones you've had in the past about Ponson and Raffy. Sometimes I can't read them because every other word is ****, ****, or *****!!
