View Full Version : Let's clear something up about what getting blown out "means"

First, let me state that by NO means am I justifying or blowing off our loss yesterday. It was bad. REALLY bad. And I am very concerned about what it means and what lingering effects it may have. I'm scared to death that Brunell has officially returned to earth and the Eagles are going to shut us down next week.
Having said that, I keep reading this nonsense about how good teams never get blown away or embarrased like that. Simply not true-- at least not at the midway point of a season.
Last year Atlanta was one win away from the Super Bowl. They also got absolutely MANHANDLED and embarrassed by a non-playoff team in Kansas City.
And the fact that we were "shutout" really doesn't matter to me. A debacle is a debacle. A blowout is a blowout. The Eagles got DESTROYED by Dallas three weeks ago-- dominated from beginning to end in every phase of the game. The fact that the score was mildly respectable doesn't make their loss any worse than ours.
In 1991 the Lions lost 45-0 to nothing at Washington on opening day. The managed to make it BACK to Washington for the NFC Title game.
We took one on the chin big time yesterday. The Giants were better prepared, tougher, more athletic, and more hungry. They were better. Period. We got our tails kicked in. But honestly, I think in this case, that kind of loss was better than a nailbiter. Brings us back to reality a bit, challenges the team, and heightens the awareness of the importance of the Philly game.
NOW we'll find out what the team is made of. The Giants game was the START of something, a precurser. To what, I don't know.

exactly....how we react and bouce back from this game will define the 2005 Washington Redskins...i think gibbs and staff will make is positive.

Yes, our reaction to this is THE key to the rest of the year. But next week, there are NO moral victories-- only an actual victory will suffice. If lose a heartbreaker on a Hail Mary at the end of the game, the Eagles loss will still be WORSE than the Giants loss to me. Our backs are against the wall. We've been tested. A nemesis is coming to town..........

This team should come out and jump all over the Eagles. I respect and fear the Eagles, but this 2005 squad is not the same as last year. They are truly one dimensional and have defensive deficiencies. If ever we could take it to them, this year, this game, would be the one.
As much as I can envision stuffing them, I can also see 2-3 50+ yard runs by Westbrook, Portis getting stuffed, turnovers that bounce every way but to burgandy and gold, and an all too human Brunell. :(

in honor of Halloween ......
the most SCARY thing about yesterdays loss was the abismal play of both lines.
If we are to beat the Eagles then we better hope yesterday was purely abberational and not symptomatic or we'll be going down again!
Happy Halloween!

Throw in New England losing 31-0 to Buffalo Week 1 in 2003. They went on to win the Super Bowl.
Lawyer Milloy was cut days before that game, signed with Buffalo, and there was all this hoopla about how he supposedly tipped off the Bills on what New England was going to do. People were questioning Belicheck (including the New England media) saying how he was crazy to let Bledsoe and Milloy go to a divisional opponent. How they were going to finish dead last and Buffalo was the team to beat in the AFC, etc.
Definitely some parallels.

Justify it anyway you want. You all have seen the history of this team. I don't buy the "Gibbs will save us" theory either. Players play the game and I saw a bunch of wimps out there yesterday. We will win some more games but it won't be the ones we want. And it won't be as many as we want either. We are not New England and we are not any other team that has taken it on the chin and come back to do well. We are the inept redskins who find a way to lose. I would love nothing more than for them to come back next week and kick eagle butt, but search you brain. Do you really believe they are going to win next week against the defending conference champs who just got embarassed themselves? You may be telling yourself and others that this COULD happen but you know it isn't likely. Coaching won't win this contest. It takes a concerted effort in all aspects of the game and we can't seem to get everyone on this team on the same page. I'm just being REALISTIC not pessimistic.

I don't buy the blowout. Granted 36-0 sucks....but we gave them the damn ball on turnovers inside our own fifty like 4  times. Hell our defense spent most of the game on the field. Brunell and Portis played like they bet on the damn Giants to win. 4 rushes for 9 yards??? Someone pinch me i gotta be dreaming. And our 4th ranked defense??? Big running plays and people coughing the ball up everytime they got touched lost this game right off the bat. And someone tell me wth is Betts non punt returning ass doing catching the ball when we have Moss? I can think of 20 faster guys to put in there. I don't mind a 13-0 or 17-0 but hell they honestly played like a college team. I don't even drink man and I honestly thought about heading to the store to get a cold one...mid first quarter.
I hate to say this right now but....we SHOULD be able to hang with Philly if they cant run. We have a great pass d. At this point, I'm scared to say.
