How is it? Please give a little summary of your initial impressions. Is it better than 2002? How does it compare?

I'm going to be watching the clock all day til I can get out of work and go get it, I might have to sneak off on my lunch break and grab it, I just can't wait!

I heard the running game and the zone defenses work a lot better. Is this true?

Also, have you tried creating your own plays?

i been playing for a few hours... mainly fooling around to see which skill lvl i can handle. They really improved the pass game, it seem the DBs no longer have insane closing speed. The preseason is fun and you can actually impove alot of your players by a couple of points. I been using J.Green and Z.Flemister alot in the 4 preseason games(osaka game isn't included) and i bumpped their overall stat by 4 points. The running attack isn't as prolific as i hoped but maybe because i'm playing steelers and tampa with crappy guards play. Stephen Davis is a beast still though sometimes breaking 4 or 5 tackles just to gain 5 yards. Just like in real life even when tackled he still falls forward. The roster seems ok(LaVar is still OLB 57 ). It kept 4 Qbs I had to drop sage to create L.Jackson and D.Gardner. It also kept like 8 recievers. I didn't mess with it that much except adding names and picking up Ray Brown.

I'm now playing my first for real regular season game. The damn Cardinals are giving me fits. Danny W is throwing well(over 65%) but have two picks. Stephen Davis isn't busting lose but the defense is solid. Skins led 14-7 with 2:13 in the 3rd.

I wanna know how good the skins are in this game? And who is the skins starting qb? does spurrier chuck his visor?? how about the unis?

Zone defense is very useful since even with champ and smoot playing man will get you burned sometimes. I like the running game as it is since you don't get unrealistic stats like 300 yards a game. You have to pound it inside, no more keep boucing to the outside for huge gains.(although it's still possible if your wideout makes a good block)

Shane Mathrews is starting with an overall stat of 69(i think). I bumpped D.W's stat to 70 to start him for the regular season.

Old school uniform are in the game(again i think) SS haven't chucked his visor yet... it looks like he's wearing a hat, maybe that's just me.

does spurrier chuck his visor??

Yeah, is there a "make up a play in the dirt" option?

I only had 30 minutes to play on my lunch break, but everything was smooth and I too bumped Danny W up just a little. The defense is perfect, very realistic. I'll put up an in depth review tonigh if no one else has after I have time to go home and piss my wife off by playing all night.

I just finish playing my first for real game vs the Cardinals, and let me tell you it's was probably the most realistic game i ever played. Everything for the announcers, replays down to injure report seem like to real thing. The action on the field is just like a real football game. The gang tackle animation is finally in the game(although doesn't seem to be included in the stats). There's no longer a bunch of one handed catch for bombs. The computer AI is much better at adjusting their coverage to the pass or shifting lbs to stop the run.

Now on to the game:
The skins looks great in their old school unis and spear helmets. Trotter leads the skins in their pregame ritual as Al micheals and Madden talks about the matchup of Boston and Champ. Skins wins the coin toss but decides to kick off to show the world what the M.Lewis defense can do.

Uh oh this seem to back fire as Plummer marches the Cardinals down the field with a couple of pretty passes to Boston. Champ seem to be confused on a couple of plays as Boston runs free in the secondary.(ok i suck at controling dbs) Finally 1st and goal at the 3 yard line, newly acquired Jesse Armstead streaks into the back field and stuffs Jones. Bruce Smitch joins the fun and strips the ball. Terrell falls on the loose ball as skins ball, skins ball.

D.W marches the skins down the field with quick short passes to Gardner and Flemister. After a couple of short runs by Davis D.W hits a streaking J.Green for a gain of 30 yards. A inside draw to Davis is stuffed as Rookie Wendal Bryant overpowers Ray Brown to stuff Davis. But D.W answers with another bomb to J.Green to the two yard line. Stephan finishes the drive with a burst up the middle. 7-0 skins.

After a decent kickoff return Plummer turns into Joe Montana and goes 5-6 finishing off a 72 yard drive with a 8 yard slant to Boston beating champ for the score. 7-7 all

After exchanging a couple of punts Cardinals are on the march again with a few runs by jones and catches by F.Sanders. Cardinals are now at the redskin 30 looking to add more points. Plummer drops backs, looks to the right and fires to T.Jones coming out of the backfield.... Only to be pick off by Lavar:notworthy !!!! lavar returns it 28 yards.

With the turn over D.W marches the skins down to the 1 yard line and Davis again finishes the drive with a score. 14-7skins.

After the kickoff Cardinals goes three and out with Trotter stuffing Jones are 3 plays. After the punt D.W again marches the skin down by spreading the ball to his te and wrs. With 50 sec left and skins 15 yards for pay dirt Danny fires a bullet to Gardner only to have Ryanoch Thompson pluck the ball away. So the half ends 14-7 skins.

The second half starts badly for the skins and D.W toses his second int to Lassaiter. But Cardinals was unable to move the ball with Lavar and Trot stuffing everything coming their way.
The little geek Gramatica kicks a field goal 14-10 skins.

As for the rest of third quarter and most of 4th neither teams was able to move the ball much exchanging punts several times. It's obvious skins D are just stuffing the Cardinals but the offense unable to mount any drive. With about 3 minute left in the game the Cardinals are on the drive again. With several quick strikes to Boston who jukes away from shade and would have been gone if champ haven't made a shoe string tackle. With first and 10 at the 15 Plummer tries to fire a slant like the early score but this time champ gets a hand on the ball to tip is away. The ball floats in the air and is grabbed by SMOOT:notworthy !!! Stephen was able to run out the remaining 1:15.

MVP of the game LaVar Arrington: 11 solo, 3 tackle for loss, 1 int.

Pass:
D.Wuerfell 242yards 0td 2int 16-24
J.Plummer 186 yards 0td 2int 11-22

Running:
Davis 99yards 26Att 3.8avg 2td
T.Jones 66yards 25Att 2.6avg 0td

Receiving:
J.Green 4rec 88 yards
R.Garder 4rec 61yards
Z.Flemister 4rec 48yards
4 other with 1 catch
D.Boston 4rec 83 yards
2 other with 3

Defense:
J.Trotter 9 solo, 1 tackle for loss
3 other with 4 solo
no sack recorded.

haha I hear ya. My girlfriend hates it when a new Maddens comes out. She knows that it means tonight I'll be parked in front of the TV, and every spare second I have I'll be playing it.

I really don't understand why she gets ticked, since I play Maddens all the time anyway. Something about a new one just makes her snap. LOL

Yea, Whats LB.57 overall rating this year? last year he was 79, pathetic really when you think Courtney Brown was a 90 somthing.

Whats Smoot's two? he was a pathetic 68 or as a rookie.

Lavar overall is a 93 which i consider is pretty good.

Smoot on the other hand was 80 or 79 in that range less than D.Green who have a rating of 81. I bumped him up to a 86. Our safties are pretty average Shade a 73 terrel a 63. Stephen Davis got a 87? a 87? I had to bump him up into the 90s. QB are about right in the high 60s. Bryan Johnson got a 59 and Cartwright a 56 i left those alone. Recivers only Gardner in the 80s rest are in the low 70s high 50s range. Te are all in the middle 50s. Samuels and Janson are 90, 91. while the guards with the exception of Rod Jones(who is 83? what are the EA ppl smoking) are in the middle 60s. L.Moore is 64 and he gets overrun by DTs are almost every play. Our ends are ok in the 70s, while Wilkinson is a 70 and D.Gardener isn't even in the game. I had to add him as a 80ovr(that might be a little high) Cowsette is a 51. L.Jackson isn't in the game so i added him as a 65. Trot is a 92 and Armstead 86. Rest of the stat for backup LB are pretty sad. 42 for mason, 57 pierce, 71 mitchell.

Is LaVar still listed as LB #57 or do they use his name in this one?

I know with the old Maddens you could rename him to his real name and number and Summerall would call out his name.

I am torn between buying Madden '03 and NFL 2K3. I've heard that 2k3 is actually better this year. Also, is a "Spurrier" playbook included in the game?

Gardener is on the game, he's on the Dolphins. Just make a trade for him. I delt Dotson and a 2nd round pick for him.

Overall the game is pretty tight, they added a lot of cool options, I like how you can play the preseason if you want, and your players get a little better after the preseason. The graphics are great, gang tackles are cool, and the audio is good too. Michaels is a nice change, and you can hear more noise coming from the field, players yelling watch the screen, etc.

A great, great game.

When the PS2 network adapter comes out (August 28th for $40) you can access the EA Sports roster updates and it will update the players and their ratings when needed. Or you can buy a Gameshark port and download new rosters from sites like maddenmania.com. Or you can just do it yourself, like I do :)

To put Gardener on the skins, go to rosters before you start

Dynasty mode, go to dolphins and select release player and cut

him. When you start your Dynasty mode he will be in the free agents.

He is listed as a DE, so he loses points when you put him at DT.

Somebody tell my boys at EA that Bryan Johnson is white. No Respect. Nothing worse than being such a nobody that they can get your video game character correct.

Answers to previous questions

To bump up a player is to boost their stats in the main roster menu and save it so they are "permantly" higher than what they were originally. I felt Wuerffel need to be boosted, he was rated way too low.

The rosters require some changes. Arrington is lb #57 because of his dispute with marketing or what ever, but all you have to do is change his name and it's him. Brett Conway has #1 rather than 5. Kevin Lockett has 81 rather than 83. It's not a big deal since it can be changed.

One cool thing, the rookies are there, with their pictures too. (Ramsey, Betts, Russell etc..)

The UNI's are the coolest.

I had to adjust the AI on the PRO level because there were too many passes knocked down, but with a little tweak, it is perfect.

The passing game is improved. Pass routes such as comebacks are much more realistic and work better than in the past.

The only thing I don't care for is the fact that the defense is much to "aware" of passes. Like I said, I had to tweak it a little, but sometimes, it's like the defenders have eyes in the back of their heads. The good thing is that the AI is so adjustable.

Question about Madden... Can you import players from the EA NCAA game to the Madden game like the Sega games? I read about that for the NCAA 2K3 game by Sega and was wondering if EA had done the same thing?

Yes you can. It's better only if the players had their names filled out in NCAA 2003 rather than just numbers.

If you have a Sharkport(the USB cable that connects your PS2 to your PC), you can download true to life rosters from here:

http://www.maddenmania.com/files/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=81

It has all the unamed players named (i.e. #57 is LaVar Arrington and his number is changed to #56). It is also updated as of 8/12/02 with the correct players as free agents and free agents on correct teams. Gardener is still on the Dolphins though. But the file is tight.

Here's a tough question, given that the game is new, but ...

I've heard that, like the previous versions, Madden doesn't have a lot of trick plays, e.g. The FleaFlicker.

Is this true with 2003? If so, can you craft wacky plays like the FleaFlicker and WR screen passes?

Thanks!
