I hope you guys are f'ing with me I always tip them guys
the few times I have taken a cab they charge by minute and by mile. Ive watched their meter and it seems to either tick on the quarter mile or arround 20 seconds if idle. Really I dont know, like I said I almost never use one.

I usally tip a couple of bucks. For reference, most of my cab rides are from the airport home or vice versa. The cab fare is gernerally between 16.50-18.00. I give a 20. If they got me home for the cheaper fare, they get more in tip. I still do't understand how when they are supposed to only charge for the milage, the fares could end up different taking the same route. Oh well, I figure wiht the $20 rule, it's all on them.

I cab it around Chicago every June for a trade show. If the guy is personable, and takes the most direct route, I will usually tip two bucks on a 6 dollar cab ride

Cab fare here in Charlotte is by the mile. About 2 to 3 dollars depending on the time of day you ride. I usually tip about 5 dollars. You should because it is an extremely dangerous job and that is my way of commending them on that.

I tip them 15% to 20%. The same as waiters.

Are cab drivers paid below minimum wage like Waiters?
Nope.
So they get the fair and not a penny more from me.

I usually give 2-4 bucks, depending on the fare and the driver. A good driver who puts in an effort to get you there quickly, I'll give him 3 or 4 bucks. I've never taken a long, expensive ride so I'm not sure how much I'd give on a $30-50 ride. It really depends on the driver and how long he takes though. If you can tell he's jerking you off, you give him the dollar amount above the fare, if anything. And I can see how some people rarely tip though, especially people who take cabs a lot and deal with drivers yelling "*******!" at you when you give them $7 for a $6 ride.

i took cabs when i was in vegas....it cost 3.20 for the first mile and then .25 for each additional 1/8th mile. My cab to the airport cost around 14.00... I gave him 2 bucks for a tip. We took another cab from the Hard Rock to the Paris... 5.75.... I tipped him 2 bucks as well.

My dad made a great move when we took a cab ride home from the airport a few years ago. Cabbies love to pick up ppl at the airport, then claim that he doesn't have change to bump his tips up. So if the fare is 12 bucks, and the weary traveller just wants to get home, he gives the big tip just to end the transaction.
So we get back to our place and the fare is 12 bucks and my dad hands the guy a twenty and asks for 5 back (3 dollar tip, not bad). The cabby says oh, I don't have any change, so my dad gets the twenty back and hands him a 5 and 7 ones. "Now you do," and we walked away.
It was awesome.

Cabs and I go way back.
Well not really. but I did live in NYC for 5 years so I've taken a few cabs.
I don't know if DC changed but they used to go by zone. So if you crossed 2 zones on your trip it would be a certain fee. Also, i read somewhere that DC cabs are some of the oldest and most unsafe cabs in the country. Which leads me to my true story of watching a DC cab hit a pothole and crack its right front axel and come to a grinding halt at my feet.
About tipping cabies. I tip, if they don't try to screw with me. New York cabbies try to take advantage, esp. if your drunk or a tourist. They take you on the slow avenues like Park Ave and try to take stupid roads that only add time and mileage. Bastards. I know those tricks and I tell them. They either promptly take the quickest route or try to convince me that it is a faster way. Guess who gets a better tip?

It's a combination of both idle time and mileage. Some cabbie there was explaining it to us when we asked him to take the quickest way from Freemont down to the bottom of the Strip. If you take the Strip down, you sit in traffic and at lights, and for every few seconds you're sitting in idle, it adds to the fare. So he took side roads that were longer distance, but had no traffic and few lights. Either way wouldn't have been much different in fare though.
*Also, next time you stay on the Strip, take the shuttle to the airport. It'll take a few minutes longer, but it's like 9 bucks roundtrip, plus a couple bucks for a tip both ways.
And Doyler, that is classic!! I'll have to remember that one.
