Seeing the thread about tipping cab drivers, I was curious about what you guys and gals tip your barber or hair stylist.

I get my hair cut at The Hair Cuttery (I request the same person). For a $12 haircut, I tip $5. I used to only tip $3 until I saw I guy roll up in there one day and give her a $20. I didn't know if I was a cheapo, so I upped my tip amount.

I was talking to a friend about this and he said "oh, you're supposed to tip for a haircut?" No wonder the he's been getting crappy haircuts for years.

Hahaha ...

Just be happy that you're not a girl ....

I tip 20% when I get my hair cut or get any other service ....

Some stylists don't make much money ... and have to rent out a station at the salon that they're working at ... so as long as they do a good job and I'm happy with it ... I'll gladly tip 20%. Heck ... if I'm super impressed or in a darn good mood, I'll tip more than 20%.

I cut my own hair, so nothing. But if I do get a haircut somewhere, i'd give 5 bucks.

I use to tip $3 on a $15 cut. Now I just cut it myself with clippers.

I've had the same barber since 1992. I have always given him $5 on top of the cut....

15% for an O.K. cut....20% for a good cut.

I've been told that if the owner cuts your hair; you shouldn't tip at all...I was wondering if that is true.

I always tip $2. This isn't like a going to Applebees where they get paid $3/hour.

$5 on a $12 haircut would be over a 40% tip. Seems a little excessive.

Usually just $2-3, seeing as it doesn't even take 10 minutes to cut my hair.

I just got a cut Saturday, and it was 17 bucks. I figured a 20 was a good enough.....

my barber used to charge 8$ for a haircut, so i'd give him a 10 and call it even. (that is 25%)

now he charges 9, so i had a decision to make. keep it even 10, or tip that extra dollar. i went w/ the extra dollar.

some of the amounts of money i'm seeing that you guys pay for a cut stuns me.

I usually tip 20 percent for a $10 haircut. I go to a shop owned by Korean women and, after the cut, they give you a nice scalp, neck and shoulder massage. VERY nice!

I found $240 blowing down the street. There might have been more, but this was the South Side of Chicago and I didn't want to wait around to find out.

$ 3 bucks, I felt bad once. This guy tip the guy a $ 20, during X mas.

I get a cut every two weeks, I can't afford a $5 tip.

$13.00 + 2.00

I go to the same person every time, she doens't seem to mind.

If you didn't charge them for your commission, and put a sign in your office that said "tips appreciated", then they probably should.

I dont make a salary, only commissions.

A Hair Stylist makes a salary.

Costs $14 for a haircut at the locally owned joint I go to...

Give $6 if I get the lady....she does a good job with the cut and she is friggin' hot :)

Give $3 if I get the old man...he's a butcher so I only go to him if I'm in a hurry (since hot chick usually has a line of customers waiting for her).

Be glad your not a women guys, at a top salon they tip as high as $100.00 for some services. For we guys 20% is a good number, and I agree with the gentelman who said if the cutter is hot looking and gives a good cut you may go higher.

Why do you tip them, and not the others where it is a costume to tip?

Do you top the pizza driver?

A Waiter/Waitress makes under the minimum wage, but pays taxes (or is supposed to) based on a percentage of their sales.

Uncle Sam assumes they will make tips as part of their compensation. And it's a reasonable expectation. Haircutters/Cabbies/Deli workers etc are paid at least the Minimum Wage.

That's the difference.

Custom? Only because people have been duped into overpaying.

I cut/ shave my own head.

Do Men have hair stylist?

I guess I went to a "stylist", though for my hair she just grabbed the clippers and did the same thing a barber would do. For me it was more convenience than anything. The barber shops in this college town are too crowded, especially at noon. I'd rather save 30 minutes and pay $5 more.

Wow.. thats very close to me. I live right next to Huntington. Are you talking about the Kims right in between the 7-11 and JnJ's? By the way, the next time you get a haircut you should go get some food from there... it doesnt look so pretty but the food is GREAT!!

One way to look at it is barbers/hair stylists do have a skill that, in many cases, is taught through formal training. Hence, a larger percentage of the cost of service can be justified for tipping purposes.

People can be so cheap.
I remember one time working at a bar, these two ladys come in for a drink.
One gets a 1.50$ soda, the other gets a couple glasses of wine I believe.

First off, they wanted seperate checks!
Seperate Checks! On a 1.50 soda!!!!
And then they didn't tip!

I pay $8 for the haircut, and I tip $3. Its just a little extra effort to break out that extra dollar.

When the boy and I go together, I usually just give 'em a $20.

I'd tip more if it was anything other than a buzz cut.
