This man should never have been out of jail. They victim's mother said she would not be happy until he is dead. Until he meets his maker. This sick bastard deserves to die.

SARASOTA, Fla. - A former mechanic was convicted Thursday of raping and strangling an 11-year-old girl whose abduction was captured by a car-wash security camera.

The jury took about five hours to find 39-year-old Joseph Smith in the slaying of Carlie Brucia. He could get the death penalty.

Carlie's disappearance in February 2004 set off a huge search for her in the Sarasota area. Her half-naked body was found more than four days later outside a church.

Prosecutors built their case on the security-camera images of the abduction, the testimony of Smith's friends and co-workers who said they recognized the burly Smith in the footage, forensic evidence, and testimony from the defendant's brother, who said Smith admitted to the crime.

Smith did not take the stand.

Yep. As my wife says, sometimes a man just needs killin'.

I just heard on CNN he had been convicted 13 times...twice against women. Sexual predators should not be let out of jail, even though he was never convicted of it, it was obvious.

I'd put him in a tiny room, and make him watch videos of every birthday, x-mas, graduation of the people he hurt. Over and Over....24/7 for his time on death row.

with a swift kick in the balls before bed ever night.

Sometimes death seems like the easy "out"

It does seem that death is the easy way out sometimes. But IMO if the family wants that, they should get it.

Bufford, no way would I EVER let this man see another female, ever ever again. No videos, photos, drawings ... nothing. He has forever forfeited his right to even so much as see another woman (or girl) for the rest of his life. That is, if the State is generous enough to pay his room and board and sustain his pathetic life for the next 30 or so years.

I'm sure if there was an option to cut the guys dick off, and stick hot pokers up his ass. They'd take that also.

I'm sure there is a Kilgore commericial somewhere in this.

my point was to drive the images of those he hurt, into his mind until his death.

If you could somehow force him to relive their deaths, but from the victims point of view, including all the pain. that would be a better idea.

Sounds about right to me. Cheaper too.

Nah. That's too much trouble. Let him sit in his hole and rot.

I am against the death penalty in all cases.

With that said, give this guy 999 years, lock him up, throw away the key and move on.

Did anyone see the fact that the defense chose just to rest? IT was strange indeed, I don't know if it was inept council, or if the man is planning on using it as an appeal down the line, but I found it just plain weird.

Why give him that long in prison unless he lives that long?

I believe he should die slowly and painfully

You give him 999 years because that means there is no chance of parole ever. As far as I am concerned, rotting to death in a cell is dying slowly and painfully.

Before Carlie’s slaying, Smith had been arrested at least 13 times since 1993, mostly on drug offenses. In one case, he was charged with kidnapping a 20-year-old woman, but was acquitted. He pleaded no contest in another case in which a woman said he hit her in the face with a motorcycle helmet. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail. He also served 17 months in prison on drug possession and fraud charges.

It's difficult to know if this guy is a psychopath, but even if he ISNT, there are a lot of people(maybe even most killers of this kind) for whom Bufford's punishment would actually be a REWARD (other than it getting boring after a time.)

They don't look at the people they hurt as being worth anything, in fact, they view them as we might a two-dimensional representation of a human being. He gets pleasure from despoiling the innocent and from violence. Showing him birthday videos and pictures will just give him wanking material (i'm not kidding.)

As for what is the worst punishment---it's torture, followed by death.

The way our prisons are (for instance, tookie bleepin' williams or karla faye tucker) I do not trust an inmate's life to be sufficiently miserable and lonely and there are always some useful idiots who will minister to the psychopathically evil thinking they're making some kind of difference.

There's a reason that murder is the worst crime in our law, because death is the ultimate end. You may believe in an afterlife, but the life that DETERMINES how that one goes, is still THIS one. Being cut off from your opporunity here, even if we grant you the afterlife, is still the worst blow of all. For many of these men (and women,) their ego and their own gratification are all that matter. Nothing will change EVER. Thus, long years of prison, while hellish, will still them an opportunity to engage in perversion or sick violence or manipulation of human beings.

Death is the only end of their ego.

I wish people understood better what drives the mindset of many of our worst criminals. They'd understand that contrived punishments, other than physical torture and humiliation are nothing compared with the finality of death.

Of course, how would you punish a suicidal psychopath? LOL I don't know. Torture and debasement, I guess.
