Watching this 2-5 skid, I've decided that when everyone on the team is healthy, the Redskins have the talent to get into and compete in the playoffs. I don't know if they have Super Bowl talent, but they certainly have top 4 in the NFC talent.
However, it's the NFL, and no team goes the entire season unscathed. Every team loses one a few starters before the year ends (or in the case of New England, all the starters), and the truly great teams plug in the holes and keep moving forward.
These Skins don't seem to have the depth to recover from any injury. This team has been fairly lucky in the injury department until this week. But every team it gets an injury, an entire part of the game falls apart.
When Springs was out, the blitz packages no longer worked.
With Griffin out, our entire defenseive line became a disaster.
Taylor goes out and we turn Chris Simms into Peyon Manning.
David Patten and James Thrash go down, and suddenly we can't even think about throwing the ball.
I may be wrong, but this lack of depth is what happens when you treat draft picks with the disrespect the Skins do. You don't necessarily have to find starters in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th rounds (though occasionally you can). But you need to find a defensive tackle who can fill in for a game or two. Or a wide receiver who can play a second half if pressed.
This team does not have any depth outside of quarterback and running back, and I'm afraid that's going to be their downfall in this next stretch of games. Without Patten, Thrash, and Sellers, I don't even know what percentage of our offensive plays we can run. I guess Royal can fill in for Sellers, but we are basically down to 1 and a half receivers right now.
