BALTIMORE -- The Orioles have turned their sights toward starting pitchers, reportedly offering a contract to free agent Paul Byrd, who played for the Angels last season.
The Baltimore Sun reported on Sunday that sources with knowledge of the negotiations said that Baltimore has offered Byrd a two-year deal with an option for a third season. The Sun said the deal is believed to be worth somewhere between $10 million and $13 million.

Byrd, who will turn 35 on Saturday, went 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA last year with the Angels, who lost to the Chicago White Sox in the American League Championship Series. He is 72-64 with a 4.23 ERA in 10 Major League seasons. He pitched for the Mets, Braves, Phillies, Royals and Braves for a second time before siging with Los Angeles last offseason.

The Orioles spent last winter looking for a more experienced starter to support their group of young starting pitchers, but never got one -- and they're looking once more this offseason.

Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan told The Sun that the Orioles have talked with Byrd's agent, Bo McKinnis, but did not confirm or deny that an offer was made. The Sun also said that the Orioles are going to go after Nomar Garciaparra, a shortstop who finished last season playing third base, and catcher Ramon Hernandez.

The paper also reported the Orioles will take a shot at starter Kevin Millwood, regardless of what happens with Byrd, and have talked with first baseman Paul Konerko's agent.

The Orioles also appear on the verge of losing closer B.J. Ryan, who has reportedly agreed to a five-year, $47.5 million deal with Toronto. They would then have to decide who to go after or if they're confident in giving Chris Ray the job.

Team officials have said in the past that they'd rather wait another year or two before making Ray the closer.

Oooooo, Paul Byrd! excellent! I'm really happy about the possibility of the Paul Byrd Era starting in Baltimore next summer. He's definitely a someone we'll be excited to watch progress through his career...

Who else is excited for Paul Byrd?!?!

Look for both the # of years and the total amount, if he's smart, to go up now because of the genius BJ and Wagner deals. FAs are going to hit the jackpot this offseason. Not good for a team with an owner like Angelos.

However, if we can sign a solid pitcher or 2, Bedard may be traded in a deal for a big bat.

Well at least there's some activity with free agents....not terribly excited but it's something. Millwood wouldn't be to bad either, get him back with Mazzone where he had some real good seasons. Is Millwood #1 material?

Don't get your hopes up on Millwood. His price tag just went WAY up thanks to BJ and Wagner.

Think so? I dunno about that, I wonder what the correlation in the market is between starters and relievers.

well, considering Boras is Millwood's agent I would venture to say that he believes that there is a direct correlation between the markets for starters and relievers.

Good point.

On a side note, isn't it amazing how Scott Boras seems like a puppy compared to Drew Rosenhaus? I know they represent agents in different sports, but like 10 years ago Boras was the Rosenhaus of sports. All of a sudden, Boras doesn't seem so bad anymore.

The price for all good FAs went up. If these agents and players see a first year closer get almost $50M from a mid to small market team, they know that there is plenty of money out there to up their demands. The trend of contracts going down is over. We had our shots with Delgado and Vlad, and Beattie **** the bed by being frugal in a buyer's market. Petey is going to have to pony up, or we're stuck fighting it out for 5th place again because Nomar and Byrd are going to be our only additions.

*Here's a good article from Ken Rosenthal about the effect BJ's deal likely will have. Check out what he said about Wagner. And I read somewhere else (can't remember if it was a sports writer or one of the "andyman" posters on the hangout) that a lot of owners are annoyed by this deal because it pulled the cat out of the bag that these owners are making a lot more than they claim they are.
