I have never had them before, but I think I have had two in the last two weeks? Has anybody had one that wasn't caused by one of the usual triggers?

I get migrains at times.....they are not as dibilitating as some peoples but they still are bad news. I don't know what triggers mine but it effects my vision and it causes me to get vertigo at times....

I used to get them all the time when I lived in Texas. Since I moved to Pa in 2000, I've had 2. What triggered them for me was intense sunlight, extreme heat, high pitched sounds (screaming kids, sirens, etc.) and certain smells. Furenol (sp?) is what I used to get prescribed and it worked well.

How did you find out what triggered your migraines?

Used to get them about 10 years ago. I suffered for about 20 years with what is called "Clustered Migraines".
Besides having a sharp pain on the side of my temple that felt like somebody was grinding a screwdriver in to the side of my head; my face would droop, my speech would become slurred, light would increase the pain, I couldn't stand any noise whatsoever, and my vision would become blurred.
The drugs available today weren't around then. I had to have someone drive me to the hospital and the good folks at the emergency room would knock me out for about 4 hours.
I had two triggers. The 1st was chocolate; the second was alcohol. Had to cut both of them out. Being sober all the time is a pain; but I no longer suffer from the migraines and I make a great "designated driver".
Good Luck!

Just wondering as to how they identified your triggers?

My pain is similar to a migraine, but after talking with a doctor/friend, I get the impression that it has more to do with blood flow.

Q & A with a doctor. He told me that there are no rhyme or reason to migraines. one person's triggers are not the same in another person. The things I mentioned in my prior post are the things that I identified being exposed to right before my migraines. Hope that helps some.

Just wondering as to how they identified your triggers?
When I first started with migraines, they told me they were psychosomatic because I didn't have a brain tumor.
It wasn't until near the end of my attacks that the medical community started to understand migraines and my neurosurgeon started looking for triggers. Unfortunately, back then it was a trial and error approach.
I do know that there are so common triggers; like chocolate and alcohol. Fortunately, these were mine and I didn't have to go through a long process. My daughter, on the other hand, went several years to find out what her trigger was...brussel sprouts.
I'm not sure if there is a test you can take to determine what might trigger your migraines. Perhaps somebody else here might know.

Well I get srious migraines and it pisses me off. I got my eyes and my ears checked because they thought that maybe it was my equalibrium, well my ears testing came out negative so thats good news, but my left eye came out screwed up. They told me that my eye was infected along time ago and that now it has scared so there is nothing they can do about it, no glasses or surgery or anything. I thought thats its because of my eyes is the reason that I get dizzy and that my head hurst, but they said no thats not the reason.
So what they did then is take an MRI of my brain looking for anything abnormal and they found nothing. So I was like :wtf: Its annoying as hell, my head hurts so bad that its pressure in my lower neck and goes to the side of my head and sometimes it switches sides, its so bad that I feel like bashing my head into a wall. Its not a headache where you feel the pounding, its just hard pressure like someone has your brain in their hand and they are squeezing it directly.
They gave me this medicine that I need to take twice a day 1 in the morning with breakfast and 1 at night with my dinner for a month and it should reduce my migraines. Im not done taking my medicine because it has not been a month yet. The medicine is called ... SEGLOR 5 mg Im not sure what it is sorry it something to reduce and eventually eliminate them. Once in 2001 I was at work and all of the sudden my head started spinning and I barfed all over the place, talk about something wierd huh?
The sad thing is I dont even know what the trigger is to these migraines and I hope that someday soon they will figure out what they are or at least I hope I find out what is the trigger myself so I can get this resolves for life.

It's a tough process. I hope you can get it figured out.
It's interesting how the mind works. Just talking about migraines, I can feel the side of my head hurting; but the reality is ...it's not. It's like I am remembering the headaches and it is causing me to start feeling the pain that was there many years ago......weird.

I have found that Milk chocolate can trigger bad headaches/migraines. It happens to my wife. Dark Chocolate does not seem too though.
Headaches can also be caused by sensitivity to light. This can be a side effect of St.John's wort which is taken for depression, I know trust me.
SOmething that is not commonly known though is bad colon health can cause severe headaches.

Unfortunately ... I get them too. Barfing is the only way that I can get rid of them. Migraines suck.

Last year, I got diagnosed with migraines. Mine are trigged by stress and chocolate.
Doctor told me to give up caffeine altogether but I refuse to stop drinking one cup of coffee every day.
Sometimes coffee can cure mine if I get one in the middle of the day.
If anyone in your family has migraines, more than likely you'll develop them as well.
The doc prescribed meds but I don't carry them around with me when I usually get them, hence, haven't refilled the prescription. Aleve helps take care of them.
One over the counter medication you can take to avoid them is EXCEDRIN MIGRAINE.
I agree with Candace. MIGRAINES SUCK!

Ugh....migraines are the worst!!!
Many years ago I would get them on a regular basis. God, I hated those days. I tried everything to get rid of them (back in the day before the prescribed anything for them)...take like 8 Tylenol at once, keep putting a cold, wet washcloth on the side of my head...nothing worked though. Guess it made me feel better that I was trying...
I would just go home and bury my head in a pillow and try to get to sleep. Everything bothered me...light...noise...you name it. So I just went into seclusion until it was gone.
Eventually I found out what was triggering them...a combo of coffee and chocolate. I cut them out and they stopped.
Years later, I missed my coffee "fix"...so I started drinking it again...and started having chocolate again too. Have not had one in years....
...but like Sonny, just thinking about them is giving me a slight pain in the side of my head :(

Yep - I get them too, but not often thank god. I have no known trigger. Damn they suck.
There is a great medicine available for them that really helps when you have an attack, but I can't remember the name. I always cop one off of a friend who has them in her purse. Ask your doctor.

I get them in waves. I'll go a couple of months without getting one and then I'll get one every day for 3 or 4 days. I've had multiple CT Scans, taken allergy tests, been to an ENT, Ophthalmologist, been poked, probed, and prodded and not a one can figure out why I get them or what triggers them. I get Basilar Type Migraine as well as Cluster Headaches which make me hallucinate, hear things and have trouble speaking and lose alot of my motor skills. I get bands of colors in the corners of my eyes and any light, sound or smell makes me break down and sob. When I get them I'll usually grab a pillow, a bag of ice, a bucket, drag my fan into my walk-in closet, shut the door and attempt to go to sleep till it's over. I need complete darkness and silence. Anything short of that and I want to die.......literally. Either that, or take an ice pick to the left side of my head to relieve the pressure. Because most of mine hit me in my sleep there isn't much I can do but ride them out. I've been prescribed Imitrex to help kill them before the brunt of it hits me. This works great provided I catch the symptoms before it's too late but they are useless if I'm asleep when it sets in. None of the other medications mentioned above offer any amount of relief or prevention. Excedrin Migraine works similiar to Imitrex but not nearly as effective. I wish you luck in dealing with them as I know all too well what it's like to suffer the living hell that is a migraine.

What he said.
Mine seem to be aggravated by (meaning occur more often with) stress, lack of sleep and poor diet, although these factors are not necessary. I can usually essentially stop them before they start by taking Advil right away when I start getting the visual artifacts associated with migraine.

On stuff like this they usually have you maintain a diary through a couple of cycles of this to find patterns.

I used to get them a lot, and after they kept getting worse I found out that I had a malformation on the base of my skull/top of my neck and it was causing the area to fill up with fluid.
I got that removed and drained and then didn't have any headaches for a long while, I've had some recently, but not too often, and they don't seem to be the same kind.
