PHILLY VIDEO GETS GIANT COMPLAINT
"December 16, 2005 -- Upset by what they consider to be unfair and classless antics by the scoreboard operator at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, The Post has learned the Giants asked the NFL to look into possible rules violations during last week's 26-23 overtime victory over the Eagles.
When Jay Feely was lining up for the potential game-winning field goal, the image on the jumbo video screen — which hangs lower than many stadiums in the league — showed live action of the kick. The image, though, was purposely distorted, shaken and jumbled in an obvious attempt to disrupt Feely's timing and kick. When David Akers was kicking for the home team, the screen was completely still and black, other than displaying an Eagles logo.
"Why they were doing it I don't know," John Mara, the Giants executive vice president, told The Post yesterday. "Make your own educated guess. That would be a concern if you create a competitive difference by having a home team kicker looking at a black background and the opposing kicker looking at flashing images on the scoreboard."
Mara is a member of the NFL Competition Committee, but he was unsure if the scoreboard manipulation is a direct violation of any policies.
"I don't ever recall addressing that issue," he said.
Feely said he knew something was up but did not allow his eyes to stray, focusing only on the kick.
"I know it wasn't the same, obviously, that they were doing with David when he was kicking," Feely said. "There's some gamesmanship there. My only question was what are the official rules? If anything's legal, then why can't you find out that a guy just got divorced and put a picture of his ex-wife up on there? It didn't affect me, but I don't know that it's fair."
GM Ernie Accorsi asked the NFL to review the situation.
"That is not currently a violation of our guidelines," said Greg Aiello, the NFL's vice president of public relations, who added that he expects the matter to be a topic of discussion for the committee.
Feely made all four of his field goal attempts. Prior to the game-winner, the video board replayed Feely's three missed field goals from two weeks earlier in Seattle, accompanied by what Feely called "eerie music."
"There are certain places you expect things like that," said Pat Hanlon, the Giants vice president of communications. "That would be one of them."
"That's not something I would have wanted to see up on our screen," Mara said. "But everybody has their own style and their own way of doing things."

I guess the Giants organization has a short memory about opening the parking lot ramp door to allow the wind at Giants Stadium to actively mess-up field goal attempts by opposing kickers?

As a Giants fan, I see nothing wrong with what the Eagles did.
It's called Home Field Advantage for a reason. Like how the Colts pump in crowd noise, NE wouldn't shovel snow on their grass field or the Giants leaving their endzone gate open to pick up the wind coming into one end of the stadium.

I agree with the home field advantage thing. But, i don't think you should be able to pump in noise. If your fans can't make enough noise to disrupt the other team - then, well, you need better fans.

I'm not sure I have a problem either. I'm not sure because technically it is cheating since it is not a part of the game, but that's why it's called home field advantage.

I've got no problem with this, and like everyone said the giants are no saints with opposing kickers either.

If the argument is it would bother the kicker, then won't it be extrapolated to "it would bother the QB" when the other offense is on the field? I say leave it alone and chalk it up to homefield advantage.

I could at least understand why I'd be reading this otherwise, but he didn't miss a field goal.

I'm curious to know if this is actually a rules violation.
It's not the same as pumping in noise, which should certainly not be allowed. But the stadium itself should not be influencing play.

No big deal in my op.
That's why there's a thing called HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE.
Still, it didn't work.......

I have no problem with the showing of the Feely misses against Seattle prior to the kick. I would have to actually see what the Linc folks did with the scoreboard DURING the kick. I know the Linc usually shows live action on the jumbotron......if they purposely distorted the screen during the kick, that is bush league, IMO.
I remember going to a Bullets game in the early 90s at the Cap Center and at one point a member of the opposing team was on the foul line and the PA announcer said "Mmmmmmmmmmmissssssssss!" (a la Caddyshack). He did it once and that was the last time I heard him do it......I hope his butt got canned.

I don't think anybody complains about wind in the stadium.
I think they object to doors open when visitors kick, doors closed when Giants kick.
"Home field advantage" does not mean "the teams don't play on the same field".

The Giants, who courtesy of the N-F-L, have an extra home game this year (a home game that might actually determine the division winner btw) are bitching???
Give me a break.

Why don't the Redskins ever do stuff like this?
I thought that it showed a lack of class and sportsmanship. Like coughing during a fellow golfer's backswing.
I wouldn't want to see the Redskins do something like this.

I don't think you can compare coughing in golf with stadium antics. Besides, it depends on whether the cough is real or just an excuse for noise.
I think manipulating the jumbo screen is just part of the game. It's like when a close play was called against the hometeam, they will replay it to give the hometeam coach a chance to have the play reviewed, but won't do the same for the opposing team. Showing Feely's misses before a kick is just darn good psy-ops, IMO. But I wouldn't condone flashing lights. I think it's OK to get in the head of your opponent, but not to visibly/physically distract him.
Just my opinion.

I hate it that I'm agreeing with Y100, but Feely was 4 for 4....what the hell is the problem??? Do they want an extra field goal awarded or something? 5 for 4?? This was a stupid move by the Giants...and they'll probably get rewarded somehow because they are the NFL's baby....

Redskins Fined For Cheerleading
BYLINE: AP
BODY:
The National Football League fined the Washington Redskins $20,000 for breaking league crowd-noise control rules by using their public address system for cheerleading during the team's victory over Tampa Bay on Oct. 1.
Greg Aiello, the N.F.L. spokesman, said Friday that league officials imposed the fine on Oct. 9. The N.F.L. also is investigating whether the Redskins committed a similar violation during last week's game against Baltimore.
"We're looking into the same issue concerning the Ravens game, the crowd-noise violation," Aiello told The Washington Post. "It has not been resolved. This is a separate matter."
The Redskins have 20 days to appeal the fine, and a team source told The Post they would do so, arguing they did not use their public address system differently than other N.F.L. teams have.

OWU, I do remember the stories about the complaint against the Skins in 2000, but don'r remember how it was resolved. If I recall correctly, it centered around the Skins PA guy trying to get the crowd riled up by announcing when it was 3rd and long. But Mark Kessler (current PA guy) still does it, and I've heard various announcers doing it for the Eagles both at the Vet and Linc.
I don't necessarily like PA announcers juicing up the crowd during the game (for the Skins, I much preferred our old guy Hochberg, who just gave the down and distance), but as long as he's quite after the teams break the huddle, everything is legal. But having the stadium jumbotron showing a distorted picture to try and disrupt play is out of bounds, IMO. Although, again, I'd reserve judgment until seeing what was actually shown.

My memory of the complaint is the same as yours. It seems to me it was precisely that the PA guy was overstating third downs to amp the crowd, or something of the like. I also don't have any idea how the grievance played out. It seems these things make a minor ripple initially, only to completely dissapear later.
I don't know, I don't really have a strong opinion on any of this stuff. I don't really like when legal speak gets involved with football, it just seems out of place. Regardless, I was just using the article to show that the Skins were at least accused of something similar, thus negating the accusation that the Eagles showed a lack of sportsmenship in a way the Skins would never venture towards.
I don't know, its a lot of fuss over nothing, really.

Can someone please explain to me how that is supposed to affect the kicker? When did you ever see any kicker looking at the Jumbotron during a kick? If they starting shining lasers in his eyes during the kick or setting off sonic booms then you can complain. Until then it is just a funny gag meant to amuse the fans.

What does any of this have to do with people from Philly?
Are you just ranting for the sake of it? For the enjoyment of seeing your angry thoughts on the screen?
