I don't know if any of you listen to Riggo on SIRIUS but he consistantly says how the Redskins are not a good football team. Today he even said "people tell me I'm anti Gibbs, well I guess I am. I just think the game has passed him by"
I love this guy but I just don't get it.

How can you be "anti-Gibbs" after it was him that made Riggins who he was. I've never been on the Riggins bandwagon. I think in this era he wouldnt even be a starter.

Riggo is always a little too broad in his statements. This is not a good offensive football team. It's a good defensive team. Overall, it's an average team leaning towards good.

Well I will say this. Riggo says what he wants, when he wants. Always has. Gibbs respects that. He may not like it, but he respects that. So, like was already said, it is what it is.

Amen!!! Riggo has always marched to the beat of a different drum and he has never been afraid to share whats on his mind -- some people cant handle that. Luckily for me -- I dont have to choose between Coach and the Diesel -- I love em both :D

John Riggins certainly could play in today's football...........he'd be a great backup and provide short yardage relief for Clinton Portis but anyone who thinks that he could supplant Portis as a starter  .....spare me.

Actions speak louder than words. Gibbs has created a great team. SI said the Skins would only win 4 games all season. Minus a few bad calls on big plays this season the Skins could easily be on top the division. You've seen the games; the Skins can beat anyone. Regardless of how it ends up this season will be remembered. Who cares what anyone ( including Riggins ) says. He's just acting like he knows what he's talking about because he's on the radio.

whenever an ex-redskin picks against the skins they become dumb and illiterate and haters by many on here. i of course was not a riggo fan however he was a redskin r.b. who has won a superbowl so i can respect that he has better knowledge than any of us, however, we dont have to like or agree with him. the skins have won 4 of their last 10 games, to sub-par teams. they do have a great defense, and they come to play each week. that will always keep you in the game, however, gibbs has his people in place, he is an offensive genius, and the redskins can barely score. maybe riggo aint so dumb.

riggo had like 1000-1300 yard seasons with the hogs.
give portis the hogs and he will have 1700-2000 season. I think he is mad cause joe gibbs said portis is the best rb he coached and that portis matched riggo's best season with a poor passing game beat up o line and a rookie TE.

I am not sure how many carries he would take from Portis but I KNOW our conversion percentage on 3rd and short would be a LOT better... Scoring in the red zone too.

Funny how Riggo gets to say anything he wants about our beloved coach and no one on here really rips him. Let another commentator say the same thing and this site goes crazy.
Riggo is a hall of famer because Gibbs believed he could still play after he retired. So Gibbs brings him back, and now Riggo is anti Redskin.
I respect what he did for us, but honestly he is not my favorite Redskin.

I have listened to Riggins talk about the Redskins multiple times on Sirius, and one thing for sure he waffles. Some days he tears the Skins apart then he will do an about face.Just the other day he picked the Skins over the Boys and was calling himself a Redskin homer. He said,he couldn't help it and that he liked it or something to that effect.Something else I noticed is he is off the wall ,he comes out of left field with some of his commentary. As others have said, alot of it is for effect and may not nescessarily his true feelings.

Riggins is also the type who will say things to get Joe Gibbs attention to point out things he sees that will work. He did it when he played and will continue to do it untill Joe Gibbs opens it up and uses all the weapons on this team like he did half way through the season. he can be a smart ass but he Loves Gibbs and knows that man can coach because he stated that the last 2 years. Believe it or not, Gibbs will listen to his older vets and anyone who can point out things that will work. All good coaches listen to there players and ex stars.

Ding we have a winner. Even when Riggins is pissed at the team and saying so, you can tell he's still a Skin. There were times during the Spurrier years he was really down on the team, but really who could blame him. I do think he's made some comments on sirius to maybe get Gibbs attention, but no way do I see him as being anti-Gibbs.

I totally agree. If you could time warp Riggins from 1983 to now, he would be one of the better backs in the league IMO. You're right about his strength, speed, and natural ability, but what made Riggins so good IMO was his sheer will power and determination. He used to just carry defenders down the field. The guy was a warrior that played very hard, and I don't see why he wouldn't be a great back today.

I don't have Serius but Riggins speaking on Sportsalk 980 this last Thursday was unusually complimentary to both Portis and the skins. He seemed pretty certain that they'd win. This means more I think when you consider all his negative comments. And say what you like about the guy, but he sometimes calls them far more accurately than anyone around. Like just before the first game, he was on that George Michaels show with Wilbon and said that Gibbs would yank Ramsey the first opportunity he had. George asked something like, "So you mean you think Gibbs'll yank Ramsey after the first game or two?" To which Riggins replied, "First game? No, he'll yank him in the first half!"
And yeah, Riggins definitely says things for effect, but he also is quite clear that he has stopped being a homer or fan since Snyder purchased the team.
EDIT: I still love the guy for the memories he gave us. It would be REALLY hard for him to undo that in my mind. He's still and always will be one of my favs.

#1. John Riggins is the greatest Redskin running back of all time. Nothing will ever change that. He was the perfect match for the Hogs in the early 80's.
#2. John Riggins has always been a whack-job loudmouth. You young-un's don't remember too much, and the rest of us probably never heard the half of it. Riggins played before there was 24/7 news, ESPN, etc., etc. In this day and age, he'd be hated as much as guys like Shannon Sharpe, Jeremy Shockey, and Deion Sanders for his flamboyance. Back then, he was just a little nutty.
Don't forget, Riggins used to show up drunk or hungover on game day. Don't forget that Joe Gibbs wanted to trade him the minute he became head coach, but Riggo put a no-trade clause in his contract. Don't forget that Riggins was NEVER Gibbs type of personality, but Gibbs was more than happy to have the Diesel in the backfield.
I don't think Gibbs and Riggins were ever close friends. I don't think they ever will be. But they both got their first Super Bowl rings because of each other.
The difference is, Gibbs won a few more without Riggo. Riggo has had to settle for a second-rate broadcasting career. So, maybe he's a little bitter. Or maybe he's still showing up to work drunk or hungover. I wouldn't put either past him. But he's still one of my biggest childhood idols, and if you guys wanna dump all your Riggo memorabilia, let me know - I'll take it off your hands.

Riggo himself said it a few times: his is an entertainner, even when he was playing football. If he plays today, and have a decent line, he will be top 5 in the league. IMHO.

Campbell is youth at Qb, Moss is youth at WR. I agree with you about only having one reciever, but that will be addressed this offseason. Gibbs is genius. He drove this team with 1 WR like a car with 3 tires, into the playoffs. Gibbs is an underestimated coach.

The problem is that in 10 years, Riggins will no longer be considered the best back in Redskins' history. That prestigious title will belong to Clinton Portis.

Yesterday, on the Afternoon Blitz on Sirius radio, Riggins was ripping the Skins offense and called our season a "mirage". He said our offense is no better than it was last season and that Gibbs should be making less money than Greg Williams. He said Greg Williams was carrying the team (and Gibbs) and that next season the Skins will be in trouble offensively. I don't know if he feels the need to be more critical of the Skins or what. It is disappointing to hear such a lack of support from one of the greatest legends we have. Anyone who follows the Skins knows that they've put up over 30 pts. in 3 of the last 4 weeks. It'll be interesting to see, if we keep winning, whether Riggins will change his tune towards the Skins.
