View Full Version : Could we be the NFC "team to beat" of the future?

Just wondering. Looking at the PRESENT NFC, I feel that we can beat ANYBODY......right now. I look at the current NFC playoff race. The two 'highest rated' NFC teams both have lost to us. We have beat everyone in our division at least once.

With Joe Gibbs getting a better handle on the current NFL and with our stellar defensive coaching staff (which I hope stays intact), are we actually primed for a 3, 4 or 5 year run at the playoffs (similar to what the Eagles have done lately).....or are we just having a good year THIS year, and are resigned to make our beds in the muck & mire of mediocrity??? I mean, we have all the tools, and have a future QB for the team in Jason Campbell. Most of our players are young, and have been able to handle business as of late and get us back into the playoff race. With a few picks in the draft to sure up our D-Line and Wr's, could we be the team of the future, that everybody will be scared to play? ( not to mention that we have one of the hardest stadiums to play in, in all of the NFL)!

thoughts????????????

I think to be that perennial power, we need a long term, franchise QB. Can you say Jason Campbell?

It would be nice to have this turn into something special. After having my heart broke so much in the past I can only hope this is the return of the skins of old.

I think we match up against Seattle very nicely...and we already beat them. But they look like they've gotten a lot better since we last played them. We beat the Bears, and the Giants. The 3 teams already guranteed a playoff spot.

i read this early this morning and it brought a smile to my face.

Return of the Redskins (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AptXWCxj8agpG7GpjJHnZ_M5nYcB?slug=cr-redskins122405&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)

Surely, it's a momentum that has been building for the Redskins all month long. Written off as regular-season fodder at the end of November, Washington has remade its image into one that looks like yet another dangerous NFC playoff team. And in a conference that seems to have only one clearly elite team in the Seahawks, there's no telling what the Redskins can pull off from this point on.

"Guys are motivated," Gibbs said. "They are excited."

This is exactly why i believe we are the soon to be "team to beat in the NFC!"

HTTR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :notworthy

Playoff teams play the way we have the past two weeks, especially against division foes. The problem is that our division will only get better. Philly be be closer to form next year. Parity is rampant.....just look at Da Bears.

We make the playoffs and the target on our back just grows bigger. It's hard to predict a team of the future in the NFC, especially with the salary cap.

I think we have all the right players to make a run. However, I really want Jason Campbell needs to become our qb of the future because I do not think Brunell has that much left in him and Ramsey is a really big question mark. Everything else is in place.

GUYS:

The Skins are in good shape for the long haul. Contrary to popular believe they're fine cap-wise and should even be able to sign one or two top free agents. Don't expect the skins to lose any starters and they'll probably upgrade at one DE spot, WR, and LG. They also have one of the younger teams in the league. This team is built for a 4-5 year run, possibly longer because without any immediate needs they can make draft choices similar to Campbell where they can ride the pine for a few years before starting.

Depends how your QB situation pans out. Period. You got good QB play this year and, surprise surprise, are a very good balanced offensive ballclub. If Campbell is great, you will be great. If he is a bust, you will not be the team of the future as you will waste a few years looking for the next diamond in the rough.

This is why it's so great to know that Dallas is on borrowed time. Seriously, once Parcells quits on them and Bledsoe shortely thereafter, what does the future hold for them at the QB position? Henson?

Agreed, which is why Dallas isnt the team to beat in the NFC. Maybe on defense, but not offense. The Skins have been very balanced this year, mixing up the run and pass well, and despite the defense giving up some big plays, they have been solid. If Campbell is the QB we have been longing for, then we could be a very solid, and possibly great team in the NFC in the near future.

agreed, I cant believe some cowpoke fans actually want to play us again at FedEx in the playoffs, even after we swept them. Well, they'd be in for another asswhoopin if we do end up playing them again, but in the playoffs.

BTW, in our sweep of Dallas, we outscored them 49-20!

I think we are the NFC team of the Present and the Future. We need a long-term QB that can garner a rating of 80 or better to extend this thing.

The Skins could be a tough team for awhile. It's just a matter of getting Campbell some playing time and hoping it won't take long to mature. And then there's the fact that the NFC east looks like it'll be beating up on each other for the next few years which is a disadvantage compared to the schedules Seattle and Chicago end up with.

Gibbs had a team to fear for pretty much the entire 80s, with several QB's

I don't think it matters if JC is *the guy*

If Gibbs can find a mistake free QB that is all its really going to take. He is going to ride Portis the rest of his time in Washington

I can't see it with salaries at 113 million next year which is about 20 million over the cap

agreed, since we are a run-heavy team, as lomg as we have a QB that can make the passes and get the job done, I think we will be quite fine.

I think we will be the NFC team to beat next year. We got some great franchise players in Moss,Cooley,Portis, Taylor, to just name a few. Brunell is good for a couple more years, then we need to find a good young quarterback to take the helm (Campbell?). I think we can dominate next year given that nothing horrible goes wrong in the offseason and we keep playing the way we are right now next year. We can be great!

Our cap situation always looks ugly, but they're have been countless threads and articles over the past few months showing that we're actually not in such bad shape... we can get under the cap relatively easy.

Jason Campbell had a pretty good run with a run-heavy team at Auburn. If he could get it done with Cadillac and Ronnie there is hope that he can do it here as well with some seasoning. My hope is that Brunell can stick it out one more year and then turn over the reins to Jason. In the meantime a couple of playoff berths would sure go a long way. Once you are a playoff caliber team you can justify spending big bucks to bring in a couple more guys to push you over the top. You just have to be careful not to go overboard and mess with chemistry like what we saw in 2000. But I think that we are in much better hands Gibbs than Norv.
For the long term I think we are in nice shape. Almost all of our key guys are on the right side of 30 except for Lemar Marshall. But you see linebackers who can contribute well into their 30s. In my opinion the biggest question marks are going to be 1) Gregg Williams and 2) Lavar's contract situation. Beyond that I think that these are the times that you want to start looking into extending guys like Cooley and Taylor for the long haul before they become very expensive.

Yes, but you should change the wording to be the NFC team to beat for the present and future. Actually pretty soon it will be the Team to beat not the NFC team to beat.

Good Thread. I try and never look ahead and I surely did not spend any time thinking about the playoffs this year. I only needed 8 games and was looking at the playoffs as a possibility for next year. Then, I kept seeing the playoff bracket and the teams there are there after we beat the Giants and realized that 1.) we cannot look past this game with the Eagles but 2) if the season ended right now, we could beat any of those teams in the NFC bracket. Wouldn't that be something?

When Joe Gibbs came back, we immediately became the team of the future to beat. The only question was how far into the future? Much to my surprise, a year sooner than I expected, given the sorry shape of the team upon his arrival.

Someone posted this fact in another thread, but the only "valuable" player we have as a FA is Ryan Clark. The core players will be here next year (with the exception of Arrington and his $12 million cap hit). Add to the fact that we will have no first round player to sign, and the 20 million over the cap becomes manageable. I say sign Clark and release Noble and Bowen (for $4 million savings).

If you guys beat the Eagles, which I hope you do, you'll likely get a second shot at Tampa (I know many of you would love to see some kharmic retribution!) And if you do, I hope you win it. Your next stop would then be Seattle, and I think that would be the end of your ride this season. You beat us in Fedex, but I think we take you in Qwest. You're definitely an up-and-coming team, barring any unforeseen circumstances, but I don't think this is your year to go to the Superbowl. (It's our year, and we've been waiting almost 30 years for our year, dammit! :D )

A lot of it has to do with Ramsey stepping up. Rumor has it JC is not progressing as quickly as we would like. I guess we'll know by next year whether or not Ramsey will be ready to take over the reins.

Ramsey might not be here next year, meaning that'd Brunell would most likely start, and then be replaced by Campbell later on in the season. We'll see though.
