Losing in the Super Bowl.

losing in the SB because if you dont go at all then you wont have won anything but if you do go, then at least you'd have had to win a NFC/AFC Championship game to get there. So losing in the SB is better than not going at all.

Losing in the Super Bowl. 2nd Place is just 1st loser. Plus, it makes me think for the rest of my life what would have happened had a play gone differently, or a ref call. I'd rather not make it to the Super Bowl.

Not going. Losing isn't a bad thing. 2nd place out of 32 teams and you know you're losing to a great team.

For me, its not going there, but with one qualification: getting blown-out in a SB is the worst!

I agree that going to the Big Dance is better, but it can get embarrassing if you get continuously rolled like the Broncos and Bills did from the late 1980s thru the mid 1990s. At least the Broncos and Elway later atoned by winning back-to-backers in the late 90s. This is going to sound extremely blasphemous, but I got so sick of seeing the Bills in there that I was actually cheering for Dallas during the rematch of the game the year before :(

No one forgets when you lose the big one. I say losing the SB. Almost no one remembers NFC championship games.

I think it depends on what kind of team you're talking about. For the Colts not to make it to the SB this year after basically being the best team in the league would be a tough thing for them to live with all off-season. For the Redskins to get in the playoffs, but not get to the SB - well you can always be happy they exceeded many peoples' expectations and left us wanting more for next year.
As for what happens once you get to the SB, I don't think you can be too upset to lose it, unless you just totally **** the bed on Superbowl Sunday. Like someone else posted, being number 2 in a 32 team league isn't bad at all.

At least if you go to the Super Bowl, your teams gets on thoise cute little Super Bowl pins you see in the glass cage at sports shops.
And you are still a Conference Champion.
It would be like saying..."Whats worse, winning your division and not getting to the Super Bowl or just not going to the playoffs."
I'm not saying I want to be the next Buffalo Bills of the 90's, but getting there is VER special!

In our case, I would have to say not going. If we make it this year that will be a huge accomplishment for us even if we happen to lose. ;) You notice I said "if." ;)

Washington-Dallas, 1982 season?
Miami-San Diego, 1981 season? (AFC, actually - but you get the point)
IMO, the conference championship games are usually much better than the Superbowl. The SB is all about commercials, casual fans paying attention for one game all year, 4 hrs of pre-game hype with the network talking heads, wardrobe malfunctions, etc.
Conference championship weekend always feels like the last real weekend of the season to me.

I would say that its worse getting to the super bowl and losing because its so close to the goal but not getting it.

I think going this year and losing would be ok.
It wouldn't be anything that the Eagles haven't done before, recently. :D
As long as it wasn't to the Donkeys, I wouldn't be too pissed. Yeah, I guess I would but it would be much better than a 5-11 Spurrier or 7-9 Norv season. Gibbs would really be proving all those idiots like Pastabelly wrong and a lot earlier than we all expected.

losing in the superbowl is the worst ever. You can say yeah we were NFC Champs, but who cares. Gotta be #1 or who cares

I really hate to hedge here but this question does really deserve two answers for me personally.
There has been no worse feeling for me as a Redskin fan than the night we lost SB 18. It felt worse than any Norv 3-13 season and certainly worse than losing to the Giants in the 86 NFC Championship Game and it lasted for the entire year.
However, once the pain subsided, I looked back and do take pride in at least the Redskins being an NFC Champion. When I look back at say the Norv 3-13 or Richie's 4-12, my head drops with embarrassment even to this day.

Losing Super Bowl XVIII is far more painful than any loss - even to Dallas. If you're not going to win then don't go.

I look at it this way, you get 2 or 3 more good games and another month of Football. You get to the SB, you probably had a good regular season, too

Losing in the Super Bowl. It always sucks but we would still be NFC Champions.

I'd rather lose in the SB than lose in the NFC title game. I dont even think I'd be able to watch the Super Bowl if we lost the conference championship.

A lot depends on the franchise, for instance as Redskins fans we have won 3 so losing, while it does suck, doesn't have the sting as say Buffalo, Philly, Minny, or the Chargers. Those fans only SB memory(s) are of defeat in the biggest game.
So as a Redskins fan I vote not going.

Having never seen the Redskins in a SB game i think id love to see them get there, however watching them lose after winning the NFC championship would be too hard to bear. I think id rather that we got knocked out earlier than that.

I say it would be worse to not make the Super Bowl. There is nothing wrong with being the second best team in the league. It would hurt to get as far as the Super Bowl then lose; but would you rather play in the Super Bowl or watch it at home? I'd rather play.

There have been some nice memories in NFC Championship games. I'd rather make it and lose than get beat a round or two earlier.
The object is to go as far in the playoffs as possible, right? Why would you EVER prefer to get beat earlier????

Definitely NOT GOING. No matter what, you were at the very least the Conference Champs. What can your rival fans say? There team didn't even make it.

December-31st-2005, 11:34 AM
Considering there are only two teams that make it, and some teams have never been...I'd say not making it to the SB would be worse.
How many great players have played the great game of football, and never been to the big game. Too many.
The SB loser may not be remembered, but the players on the team will know they were the best in their conference at that time.

I think it all depends upon HOW you lose in the Super Bowl.
If you are a double digit underdog as the Bengals were against the 49ers and play a tough, close, hard-nosed game that is only won in the final minute, then I think it is worth going to the Super Bowl.
If on the other hand you end up like the Skins did in 1984 getting buzzsawed 38-9 by the Raiders in their worst post-season performance under Gibbs, then no, I would rather lose in the NFC title game.

I remember when we... in 1983... the game was sooooo supposed to be ours. It was my first live game, and we got blown out, in every phase! It hurt so bad. I'd rather not go. Lucky we tased 2 wins since so i know how that feels :)))

Yeah...I don't even wanna talk about SB XVIII...the score should have been the other way around...thankfully, SB XXII erased that horrible feeling...HTTR!!! :point2sky
Going to the Super Bowl is always better than not going, IMHO...even if you lose the Super Bowl, you had one or two more weeks to celebrate!

not making it. Every game from this point forward is icing on the cake. If gibbs makes it to the superbowl in his 2nd year back, it will exceed my expectations a hundred fold. We were supposed to be playoff worthy after 3 years or so. Getting there is sort of a cinderella dream right now. Making it to the superbowl and losing there when you are expected to make it and win is one thing. Making it to the SB and losing when you never expected to get that far in the first place is completely different.

If we went to the SB and lost it wouldn't be a bad thing, because next year we would break the string of losing teams not making it to the playoffs because we are going to kick ass next year and this year in the playoffs.
Also going to the super bowl would increase Gregg Williams chances of staying in washington, because most teams will have their coaches in place by February.

Thats one game I am glad I didn't get to see. I saw the one earlier in the season and we did win that one (probably shouldn't have though) but I was thinking that the Raiders would probably win the SB.
Glad my parents decided not to get cable tv for a while when we moved out of state.
