The hottest name on the coaching carousel is officially off the market.
FOXSports.com has learned that Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has signed a record-breaking contract for an assistant to prevent him from interviewing for a head coaching post elsewhere. Sources close to Williams said early Tuesday that Williams agreed to a new three-year deal worth nearly $8 million, well above the financial terms for any coordinator in the NFL.
Williams also agreed not to interview for any head coaching openings this off-season but, according to the source, it doesn't preclude him from taking a gig next year. The source also said that the biggest overriding factor was the fact that his family loves living in the Washington, D.C. area and were ecstatic with the new deal.
Williams was a top candidate in Minnesota, St. Louis and Kansas City, although the Chiefs are expected to hire Jets head coach Herm Edwards.

We're lucky to have him as an owner. He may have made some unpopular choices early on, but he's never been cheap.

Man this is great news. In addition it seems the days when Synder didn't have a clue are gone. He knows that continuity is key and knows you have to have the best coaching staff to win. He has come a long way as an owner.

January-3rd-2006, 01:15 PM
Snyder is a skins fan just like us. The mistakes he has made have all been about money (that we have seen he puts back into the team) and his desire to win. He is learning how to be a winning owner by using his money to get people to make the football decisions for him and not by making football decisions himself.
Give any one of us the team and that kind of money and we make alot of the mistakes he has made. He gave us Gibbs and he gives Gibbs everything he wants including Williams to make us a winner again. We need to let him off the hook for his growing pain mistakes and appreciate what he has done lately. I would hate to hear him booed if he is ever at midfield at halftime presenting Green or Monk with their HOF congrats.

January-3rd-2006, 01:17 PM
How do you guys reconcile this clause in the contract?
No need to, really. There were prime jobs avaible this year. Jobs he's mentioned would be nice such as Houston. Nothing is impossible, but IMO, this tells me he's comitted to being here and taking over. Otherwise, it would make much more sense to take one of the current jobs. Let's face it, the KC job is prime. Good team that already is competitive. If there isn't a meltdown of some sort, I fully expect he'll stay and take over when Coach Gibbs decides to hang up his hat.
And no coach would ever put in a clause that prevented him from interviewing elsewhere, for the length of the contract. That would be more than stupid.
Burgold
January-3rd-2006, 01:17 PM
Sarcasm message: This is just more proof that Snyder is all about the money and ripping off the fans. He is the worst owner in football. A meddler and a do nothing. My God, he sells twelve dollar hot dogs and eight dollar beers. He cares nothing about the 'skins. He only wants to make a buck off their hard working fans. Open your eyes people.
Sincere post: This is a nice rainy day surprise.

Great job by Mr.Snyder and Gibbs to keep Coach Williams here..where he belongs.:)
Not only does that get a distraction out of the way(to both the team and the fanbase), it also makes me plumb giddy thinking about these playoffs and next season...when we hopefully add that pass rushing DE to Williams' defense and watch him take these guys to a whole new level yet again!!!!!!!!

I remember reading somewhere that Greg said he would talk to Dan and Joe before going on any interviews. That said he would now have to take a pay cut to become the H/C on another team. Greg will make a fine replacement for when Joe decides to retire. Kudos all the way around. What a great group of Redskins we have. From the owner on down.

I understand all of that, and agree with your logic except for your last paragraph My question is why only a one-year moritorium on interviewing for hc jobs? I don't think that it would be "more than stupid". Is it at least possible that Coach Gibbs only coaches one more year? I think that an out- and-out refusal to at least consider that as a possibilty is more than stupid.

As so many have rightly said, thanks go to Mr. Snyder, but, also to Gregg Williams. This year there were a TON of good jobs available. He probably could have gone home to KC or had a good job in St. Louis, Minnesota or Green Bay if he wanted it. The best part is there are SOOOOOO many openings this year there will be far fewer next year to tempt him.
Possibly Dallas, but, with hope, Parcells will just leave now and take that job out of the equation as if he leaves AFTER this year there's no way Jones lets Williams sit in D.C. if he has a head coach opportunity in Dallas waiting open.

If the Skins could get a Dominate Defensive End how great would that Defense be? Kind of like that Cowboys Game, where the D Line put their Ears back and went crazy.

Snyder may have meddled too much at the beginning of his ownership, but now he's doing exactly what's needed--staying in the background and cutting the checks that Gibbs asks for. I guess that's easier to do when you hire your idol.
MAJOR props to Snyder and Gibbs for getting this done. And cheers to Williams for sticking with the 'skins. The market for him is about as hot as it could ever be, with a lot of natural fits available. It's just amazing that we were able to keep him. I don't think any other owner could/would have made it happen. And I don't think Williams will regret this when he inherits the job from Gibbs in 2009. (Or better yet, even later?! *fingers crossed*)

Snyder will get bashed by the media and within nfl circles for redefining assistant coach salaries.
The reality is that this is money extremely well spent.
Gregg Williams, 1 yr, $2.75, no cap ramifications
Lavar Arrington, 06 cost of ~$10M, severe cap ramifications.
Given the choice of options that has the biggest overall impact on the defense, I'd sign Gregg to this deal without blinking. Dan knows this is the only way he can use the enormous revenues his team generates to gain a competitive edge without circumventing cap rules.
The only bummer is that we'll have to replay this whole drama after the end of next season.

Snyder would put a contract out on his head before he let him go to Dallas! :)
Much respect and propers go to both Snyder for opening the checkbook and Williams for backing up his word when he personally told me that he was looking to make DC his home for a while. Some people, like on this thread below believed he was only here to add a line to his resume. That wasn't the case. I even had the contract numbers pretty close a week ago. If GW was using my post as a bargaining point - I want 3%!

Not much of a surprise here. Danny was going to outbid everyone for Williams' services, and it is really hard to offer him anything that he doesn't already have. His job is almost like a head coaching job, except that he doesn't need to be the face of the team. He almost has as much control as Gibbs on his side of the ball. Also, how much is the potential of going to a Super Bowl worth? Certainly, he's probably going to have a better chance of getting there sooner here than anywhere else.

I agree. Instead of starting all over in another city, Williams gets to continue to coach his players that are already comfortable with his system. Also, Williams has already attained a high level of respect and acheivement within the confines of the locker room, the community and within the organization.
Williams is going to inherit quite a stable situation when he does takeover as head coach of this football team. :2cents:

OK, so Snyder has gone from unabashed hatred (Deion, BSmith et all)--> indifferent (Gibbs) --> finally starting to get "it". I hope this is a sign of things to come, because it looks like Snyder is finally learning that coaches are what makes a team, not overpaid ego's. I may have to eat my words of the past 5 or so years, but he sure looks like he has learned from his past mistakes.

I hear this is part of the great tradition that Joe wanted to leave behind when he retired, again. This is a huge gift. Thank you Daniel Snyder.

This is the part about football that i really love. Going through my mental files here and remembering all the critic that said Daniel Snyder was the worst owner in Football and no coach would want to sign with us.
The rear end kissing is going to be great for once but I rarely forget those that sand bagged us in the beginning.

Don't forget that becoming the Redskins head coach means you're in the money.
He'll get at least $4-4.5 million a year as the Redskins head coach when he succeeds Gibbs.
So combine that with his new salary as the defensive coordinator/assistant head coach and he's got a ton more money than he would taking someone else's job now.
Add that to the fact he likes where he is, gets to help shape a team he'll eventually take over, and works for an owner who will get the players he wants, and you've got a guy who's not going anywhere.

Great job by Gibbs insuring the stability of the defense and the long term future of the Redskins. Great job by Snyder trusting Gibbs and then not being frugal with the check book, something we know was never going to be an issue. Finally kudos to GW for showing some serious loyalty to a team and fan base that has embraced him and supported him from day one.
The HC, or Joe Gibbs money, will be there when the time is right. There is something to be said about ensuring the happiness of your family and GW has shown that his families happiness is a major factor in his coaching decisions, very Joe Gibbsish and Danny has and will reward GW and us in the future.

If we have been such an awful team over the past few years, then why is our coaching staff picked apart over the past several years, especially on the defensive side of the scheme? I'm glad the Redskins can hopefully enjoy the stability a team like Philly or Tampa has been able to over the past decade.

As I read over all the posts on this thread, its amazing how unified everyone is over this great news. We kept the best defensive coordinator in football so the only people fussing about this will be Cowboy fans in disguise!!!!! don't forget this part of the article:
"Williams also agreed not to interview for any head coaching openings this off-season but, according to the source, it doesn't preclude him from taking a gig next year. The source also said that the biggest overriding factor was the fact that his family loves living in the Washington, D.C. area and were ecstatic with the new deal."
In other words, he can still leave for another job next year.
im sure thats true, BUT, what if danny boy told gregg that if he stays, the hc job is his when JG retires? GW will be stepping into a dynasty by that time, who wouldnt want that? plus hes getting paid better than 3/4's of the hc's already, i bet!!

This is why a true Redskins fan should love Dan Synder. He always pays whatever it takes to do what he thinks is best for the team. Williams makes more money than several head coaches, and most owners wouldn't pay him that much. Synder is a great owner and I'm thrilled to have him.

Dan Snyder knew Greg Williams was too valuable to let go. Williams has said repeatedly that he wants to be here and learn from Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs. All of the talk about him getting head coaching jobs in Kansas City or St. Louis was indeed talk. A lot of things have been written about Coach Williams but us Redskins fans knew the truth the wholetime.
