Redskins enter playoffs banged up at cornerback
Washington
CB Shawn Springs’ sore right groin, an injury that had been bothering him for weeks entering the final week of the regular season, worsened after Springs had been beaten for a touchdown by Eagles WR Reggie Brown. Springs left the game after that play, and his status was thought to be doubtful — not only for the team’s playoff game at Tampa Bay but also for further games if the Redskins were to advance. Losing Springs would leave the team without its best cover guy and force the team to play Walt Harris and possibly newly signed Christian Morton in roles larger than the team would like. That’s because rookie Carlos Rogers could miss the game with a torn left biceps, as could Ade Jimoh, who was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat. Rogers is believed to have made good progress and appears a good possibility for the first-round game, but Jimoh’s status is unknown. Losing this much depth at corner likely would cause Gregg Williams to alter his defensive play-calling strategy quite a bit, perhaps using more zone than he prefers.
Whispers
The Redskins’ loss of LB Chris Clemons to injury could lead to an expanded role in the playoffs for LaVar Arrington, who had been replaced by Clemons on passing downs.
