Officer Rode On Top Of Speeding Patrol Car

WASHINGTON -- A D.C. police officer is caught riding down a street with his legs dangling over the side of a cruiser.

An eyewitness photographed the officer as he rode on the hood of a police cruiser on I Street in Northeast at 5 p.m. Sunday. A second squad car was also following the police vehicle.

Jason Lamberton said he took the photos from the second-floor window of his house. After taking the photos, he entered them along with some comments on a friend's Web site through his computer. The site features a web log for deaf people.

Lamberton, who is deaf, is also a math whiz and calculated the speed of the cruisers at about 27 mph above the posted speed limit.

With the assistance of a translator, Lamberton gave an interview to News4.

"Luckily, I had my camera in my pocket when I saw the cop cars whizzing by with sirens blazing. The officer was riding on the hood of patrol car number 162, laughing as it ran past the stop sign on I Street," said Lamberton.

Great example setting. I hope they are happy with their 15 minute of fame.

Who is to say the cop was not out looking for someone and that he was riding like that so he could make a quick jump on somone if located. It mentions there was another cop car behind them so it would seem they were on a mission for something.

If you'd clicked on the link and read the rest of the article you'd have seen that this was not acceptable behavior:

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is now investigating safety issues relating to the incident.

"We don't let citizens ride on hoods, and we shouldn't do it. It would be considered conduct unbecoming an officer if a cruiser ran a stop sign or was racing down the street," 1st District Cmdr. Diane Grooms said. "It could result in a suspension if an officer was involved in horseplay. If not, a reprimand would be put in the officer's jacket documenting this inappropriate behavior."

Grooms also said the officer admitted he rode on the hood of the cruiser, and said it was done because he needed to be transported to his squad car about two blocks away.

Police told News4 that if a normal citizen in the nation's capital were to be seen on top of a car, an officer would be required to give him/her a ticket and cite the person behind the wheel for reckless driving.

He couldn't just get in the car to go two blocks.

You're kidding, aren't you? I say it. He was not out looking for someone. He was goofing around. The vast majority of police officers who die in the line of duty die from car and motorcycle accidents - and not chasing suspects either - just plain old accidents. And I mean about 95%.

That photographer was an idiot for giving his name and letting them figure out where he lived. Wanna bet he gets arrested for something very soon.

DC police officers are just below Baltimore City Police Officers. These cities will hire almost anyone, as shown above.

Let it be known, I respect police officers. One of my best friends is a MD State Trooper. I used to want to be a police officer myself.

But police officers from these cities (not all, but many) are idiots who put more people at risk rather than help. I work in DC and am disappointed on a daily basis.

Yeah, it's not really a big deal. But their unproffesionalism is often on display.

I know it's wrong and all - unprofessional, a terrible example, yadda yadda yadda. But I sort of agree with you. Discipline him and be done with it.

The point really is, if he had caught you doing it, you would have been given a ticket. How can you enforce the law if you cannot follow it?

Well if I'm a DC resident I'd care because I wouldn't want my tax dollars going to pay someone to be an idiot and screw around on the job. I'm sure DC residents want idiots protecting them.

Well if this qualifies for front page news r.e. the rampant corruption within the DC Metro PD... I'd say that Washintonians have it pretty good.

This whole thing is a little bit stupid.

If I saw a cop do that, I would think 'no big deal. not smart, but who cares?'

What's tomorrow's headline going to be? An ambulance driver not wearing a seatbelt?
