Cooley was a 3rd round pick and is earning 3rd round money. However, if you look at all the third round picks of 2004, he is outperforming all of them by miles. I'd be willing to bet that his first 2 year stats are top 10 of 3rd rounders all-time.
64 Arizona Darnell Dockett DT Florida State
65 San Diego Nate Kaeding K Iowa
66 San Diego Nick Hardwick C Purdue
67 Oakland Stuart Schweigert FS Purdue
68 Indianapolis Ben Hartsock TE Ohio State
69 Indianapolis Gilbert Gardner OLB Purdue
70 Green Bay Joey Thomas CB Montana State
71 Tennessee Randy Starks DT Maryland
72 Green Bay Donnell Washington DT Clemson
73 Detroit Keith Smith CB McNeese State
74 Buffalo Tim Anderson DT Ohio State
75 Pittsburgh Max Starks T Florida
76 N.Y. Jets Derrick Strait CB Oklahoma
77 San Francisco Derrick Hamilton WR Clemson
78 Chicago Bernard Berrian WR Fresno State
79 Tampa Bay Marquis Cooper OLB Washington
80 Cincinnati Caleb Miller MLB Arkansas
81 Washington Chris Cooley FB Utah State
82 Baltimore Devard Darling WR Washington State
83 Dallas Stephen Peterman G Louisiana State
84 Seattle Sean Locklear G North Carolina State
85 Denver Jeremy LeSueur DB Michigan
86 Jacksonville Jorge Cordova LB Nevada
87 Green Bay B.J. Sander P Ohio State
88 Minnesota Darrion Scott DE Ohio State
89 Philadelphia Matt Ware CB UCLA
90 Atlanta Matt Schaub QB Virginia
91 St. Louis Tony Hargrove DE Georgia Tech
92 Tennessee Rich Gardner CB Penn State
93 Kansas City Keyaron Fox OLB Georgia Tech
94 Carolina Travelle Wharton T South Carolina
95 New England Guss Scott DB Florida
96 Cincinnati Landon Johnson OLB Purdue
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew about Cooley getting a new contract or anything...it seems like he would be the top priority in the offseason...

I know he's a kicker, but Nate Kaeding is turning out to be pretty good. Even though I'd much rather have Cooley, of course..hehe

the thing is, cooley has a four year contract, so we will give him an extension next season when only one year is left. If we give him the extension now, we strain our cap.

But it's tricky to compare stats and performances between differing positions. Sean Locklear was taken in that same 3rd round and he was our starting right tackle this entire season, so he is one guy on that list who I would not say has been outperformed "by miles" IMO.

Yep, and Locklear got a lot of media and message board attention in the superbowl. :D

Max Starks and Sean Locklear both started in the Super Bowl, Travelle Wharton has been a starter for the Panthers, Keading is a solid kicker, he is good but there are other good third round picks from that draft to.

Oh yea if he has another season like in 05 him and his agent will command more money. :deal:
Hopefully he will have an extension in palce in 06 no he will not be a hold out in 07.

he's fine, he'll get the extension when the times come
besides, he gets a sizable paycheck next season, and he happily knows it

This is what I'm worried about. If Saunders comes in and uses him like Gonzo in KC, his numbers will only increase, and his asking price will as well. I think the Skins should lock him up now, before he explodes next season (as I believe he will).

Oh yeah?
Witten: 122 catches for 1,327 yards (10.9 ypc), 62 first downs and 7 TDs.
Cooley: 108 catches for 1,088 yards (10.1 ypc) 67 first downs and 13 TDs.
You can have have the extra 200 yards and 14 catches...I'll take the 5 extra first downs and 36 more points, thank you very much! (18 of which came in one HALF against the Cowgirls! :silly: :nana: )

Okay, so I could do an in-depth analysis, but I don't the time or energy...:silly:
But Cooley's numbers have to be very good for a 3rd round pick...:whoknows:

Cooley reminds me a bit of Frank Wycheck. He doesn't have all the measurables but plays with a lot of heart and understands his position and the game. Take my word for it though, he's not going to be another Tony Gonzalez, he just doesn't have the skills for that.
Even though he is a valuable part of the team, you can't give guys like him a huge contract as a lot of his production came about due to our scheme, Brunell's inability to throw deep late in the season and our lack of WR production opposite Moss. However it would be nice if we can keep him around with a decent contract that's fair both for him and the team. Hopefully by doing it a year early we can get slightly better terms with regard to the S.B.
Depending on the outcome of his trial I'd try the same thing with S. Taylor BTW.

His contract is good right where it is.
