A lot of guys come to mind but I have to say one sticks out. There were a few players worth mentioning like Sammy Baugh and Joe T but the guy I have to say is Sonny Jergenson. He didnt have a great team around him yet he lead the NFL in passing almost every year. He never won a Super Bowl yet found a way to make it into the Hall of Fame. I think Jergenson is definatley the greatest Redskin QB.

I grew up watching Theismann at QB, and it just seems to have stuck in my head. When somebody says REDSKIN, completely out of context, the first picture that pops into my head is that single bar facemask Joe used to wear, followed quickly by Riggins, Art Monk, Darrell Green, the Hogs... basically, 81 - 85 (age 5 - 9).

Look at the team Sonny had around him for most of his years as a Redskin.

Sonny - although I didn't get to see him play. Followed closely by the Punt Returner who brought us our first Lombardi.

Not sure about this - I wasn't a big fan of Jay Schroeder. With Clark, Monk and Sanders I think Brunell would have been more effective

Brunell had Moss, Cooley and Portis. Stop the Brunell does not have crap argument. That is 3 pro bowlers basically.

I didn't say Brunell did not have crap. Schroeder had Clark, Sanders, Monk, Didier, Warren, the Hogs. You can't possibly compare Moss, Jacobs & Thrash to Clark, Sanders and Monk. Please. I'm not stating that Brunell is the greatest Skins QB - just that he was better than Schroeder. Also that Brunell probably would have performed better if we had a legitimate #2 WR threat.

Sorry, guys, but Joey T. does not even belong in this discussion. Sonny Jurgensen is one of my all-time favorite Redskins - a true gamer. But the only reasonable order if you take the time to study the team's history is:
1. Sammy Baugh
2. Sonny Jurgensen
3. The Rest

Stop that too. Patten was playing and Brunell never got him the ball. Patten was a fine 2 with New England.
Cooley was a number 2. He basically was playing wide out by the end of the yr.
One pro bowl tight end, running back, wide out, and two guys on the offensive line that had all pro honors. And people are still making excuses for Brunell.

Sonny is in the Hall of Fame, despite not having won any titles. That should tell you something.
By your line of thinking, Elway was not a great QB until he won a Super Bowl, then he suddenly became a great QB upon winning the big game. And Marino was never a great QB, huh?

And he is the only quarterback to start a playoff game for the Redskins in the last 6 seasons.

To be fair, that is one Pro-Bowler and two near Pro-Bowlers.
While we are mentioning Portis though, I have a question. How productive was he against Seattle? As I recall, not very. Using your logic, I could advocate benching him next year.;)

I vote for Sammy Baugh.
Although I, for obvious reasons, have a soft spot for Williams, Rypien, and Theismann.

I agree with your picks for one and two. But Joe Theismann certainly "belongs in the discussion." He won two NFC titles and the franchise's first Super Bowl.

The best Redskin QB I ever saw was Joe Theismann, who was one of my first sport idols during my childhood.
My dad's choice is Sonny Jurgensen.

Look, if you study NFL history, one could make a cogent argument that places Sammy Baugh in the very small group of the truly greatest players of NFL history. I never saw him play, but to read and hear accounts of his play - - he really redefined how the game is played. Sonny was a great QB and appears to be a great guy, but nobody thinks about him on the short list of all-time greats.

Sammy Baugh (defined the qb position)
Sonny Jurgenson (proved you could play the game hungover and win)

My dad would say Sonny without hesitation. I never had an opportunity to see him play though. The best Quarterback for the Redskins that I saw was the year Mark Rypien had in 91. He had the prettiest long ball I've ever seen that year. Everything seemed to fall perfectly into place that year, too bad it didn't last longer.

Portis still was productive in 2004 and 2005 which only makes the thought of a good CONSISTENT QB all the more important for Skins quest for the Superbowl.

This isn't even debatable. Sammy Baugh was the best QB in the league for most of 2 decades, and one of the best punters and DBs for several years as well.

Jay Schroeder actually won games for the Redskins. Brunell (at Dallas notwithstanding) was at best a manager.
Jay Schroeder really didn't have Ricky Sanders. Sanders wasn't on the team in 85 and was a spot player in 86. He started playing regularly in 87 and by that time Jay had an injured shoulder and confidence issues.
Jay engineered about 9 to 11 wins in games that the Skins trailed late in the 4th quarter. His knack for that isn't all due to the people he had around him.
As for the question posed, on a personal level, the greatest Redskin QB I ever remember watching was of course Joe Theismann. But based on films and reading about the players and what they did in their time, the greatest Redskin QB and one of the greatest players of all-time is Sammy Baugh.
Sammy Baugh pretty much was the man responsible for the position of quarterback being played the way we all know it today and he won two titles. How can he not be the greatest Skins QB?

Joey T. He didn't have great talent but he was a great leader. And he came thru in the clutch. Riggo was great in that 1st SB win. But Joey T also made some nice throws off play action. Loved Sonny but I gotta go with the guy who got us the Lombardi.

I grew up watching Theismann so I have to give him the nod.
There is no doubt that his exit from the game was the greatest of all time on any team.
Thanks for the good years Joe.
