View Full Version : Assuming that Patrick is traded, which route do you go with another QB?

Rookie? Old Vet? Younger guy who could be ready to grow up?
I'm just wondering how guys like Tim Couch and Akili Smith have found their way to not being on any NFL roster.
If the coaches are comfortable with Campbell as the #2, then what's the harm in grabbing one of these guys as a #3?
I'd think they'd love to be on a roster these days.
Just thinking of guys like Gannon and Maddox who needed to fail a lot before making a comeback. Nothing special.

I'd go with a rook, never know when youll find that diamond in the rough.

I would like Matt Shaub if we could get him. Lit up a hurt NE for 300 yards and if it wasnt for Vick, he would be starting.

bruce gradkowski

I think if we do trade Patrick we need to go after someone who is a quality backup, but also cheap. We already have a lot of money/capability locked up in Brunell and J.c. We just need a solid number three.
Though a lot of teams are now going with the two QB's on the active roster. That's an idea with our cap problems.

Whoever is the cheapest possible.
I don't really care because if it comes down to the 3rd string playing we're screwed either way.

With Ramsey gone, I'd find a younger vet who could be the #3 guy this year, and step in to be the #2 guy in a year when Brunell retires.

Again, it all depends on whether Gibbs thinks Campbell is ready to be the #1 or #2 QB. If so, we might go with a vet at the minimum. There should be plenty of them left out there.

Brunell will not be here for long. Campbell will start sooner or later. If Brunell is a Redskin this yr this his last. No way they are paying him through his contract.
So we are going to have get a rookie this yr and a vet next yr.

I say a rookie in the later rounds or a 2nd/3rd stringer from another team that has only been in the league for a few years.

Brad Johnson wants to leave Minn. to start somewhere else, Feely signed with the Chargers recently, Garrard probably wont be happy as a number 3. I don't know about Volek or Wallace but Griese may stay in Tampa.

The third string QB carries the clipboard or is inactive for games. I sure don't want to use cap space for that. Young and cheap is the way to go.

I can't possibly imagine Joe having two young guys as back-ups with as old and injury prone as Brunell has been. I think we'll be looking at a late 20s QB at the youngest. Someone who won't be jittery and will make the safe decision.
Older QBs aren't necessarily expensive. Look at Brad Johnson in Minnesota. Nobody wanted him and he's more than capable and I don't think he's breaking the bank there.

the best #2 option for us is ramsey, what are you guys thinking??? cut brunell, not one other team in the league would pick him up. Just like 2 years ago when we TRADED for him. not one other team in the league would made that move. He should be making the league minimum. Marcus Vick anyone???

Todd Collins from KC would be ideal for me. He's really old, but he is capable in a pinch and more importantly he is extremely familiar with Saunders's offense. He would be a nice fit for tutoring Campbell.

I like Craig Nall of the Packers. One of the better QB's to have come out of NFLE (which is a proven breeding ground for QB's), would be cheap and has been around the league enough to know what's what but isn't so old as to be set in his ways.

Whoever we go with, it will take him two years to learn the system well, just ask Brunell or Ramsey about that.

On a similar note, Dave Ragone of the Texans had a decent year in NFLE last year.

Well, if Pennington goes, do you think Herm will find room for him as a backup in KC? That may be a likely scenario if he's cut by the Jets.
I would see our 3rd stringer as a vet with experience in the Saunders offense...Todd Collins is backing up Trent Green, right? He may be available in Pennington is picked up.

I think that the way the NFL is some guys have a hard time adjusting to reading the defenses. I also think to be sucessful in the NFL you must work on your own growth. Furthermore, It depends on the coach to train the college quarterback up to the NFL. I saw Campbell in college and one thing that impressed me is his patience. I will very shocked if Jason is not a good quaterback. I rather not take a chance on one of these unproven guys. We will get either a quaterback in the draft or keep the kid Casey Bramlett who we signed in January.

That's it. Right there. Gibbs will want an experienced QB in case Brunell is injured and JC struggles. The relationship with Saunders will be the diference-maker.

That sounds like the most reasonable to me. In his first go around Gibbs always wanted a seasoned vet as a backup (see Jim Hart, Doug Williams, Jeff Rutledge). While Collins isn't exactly a seasoned vet, he is a vet with knowledge of the offense. Just as important, he should be fairly cheap.

Ideally, we get someone with some experience who has some upside should he be needed for a long stretch and, in a perfect world, he's familiar with Gibbs type system and is fairly cheap, say under $2 mill.
In a real perfect world, he has two years of experience in a Gibbs type system.
Here it is; We ain't gonna get anyone who is a better fit and cheaper than Ramsey.
You watch; we're gonna get one of the guys you mention and pay 'em about what Ramsey is making AND they won't be able to handle any more than a pure back up role.

Having only two QBs makes me very nervous...imagine this, our starter goes down (which happens all the time), now we have one QB with no back up. Dont like it, how does that QB play knowing that he is it. How does the coach call the game knowing that a reciever will be behind center if he calls a risky play?

The third string quarterback will make the legal minimum salary. That's one place on your roster you absolutely have to save money unless you've got a bonus baby rookie like Campbell was last season.
Casey Bramlett or someone like him will get the job. Possibly a rookie free agent. The Redskins need cheap young players in a lot of positions to provide depth and future starters. I can't imagine spending a scarce draft choice unless someone was too good to be true. Nor are we going to trade any player we actually like to get a clipboard holder.
Most players mentioned in this thread are out of the question. For example, Tim Hasselbeck already has a job where he is #2. Why would he come here and what would we pay him with? If you already know a QB's name and he isn't in your immediate family, the same considerations probably apply.

Brad Johnson is the vikes next starting qb
brian griese is too much money for a 3rd String QB
AJ Feely is with the dolphins and they wont let go
David Garrard is good enuff to be a starter so he wont be playin 3rd String QB
The other two r possibilities

i say do nothing this year...trade patrick for something i dont care what just something. Have Brunnel as the starter campbell as the back up and then pick up Jordan Palmer out of UTEP next year. He will be golden just like his brother! Remember you dont HAVE to have a 3rd stringer plus if we get down to third string we may as well put sean taylor in there to scare some people
