So many fans could tell you that Santana Moss was second in the NFL last season in YAC (both total & avg, to Steve Smith). But did you know that Chris Cooley was 6th? Led all tight ends, and was just behind Tiki Barber. That's effin' impressive.

Never saw this guy get tackled by a single man in space on the first try, was always a second or third tackler needed to help bring him down, damn good player.

That is outstanding for a guy his size. Usually fans would expect the small speedy guys to be the ones picking up all the YAC. Now thinking back on it Cooley did break a lot of tackles and was extremely effective at following blocks downfield.

Chris Cooley is a monster, he showed most of his breaking tackle abilities in the 2nd game against Dallas, on his 3rd TD reception.

It really is surprising to think that a TE could be that high. Imagine if he ran a 4.4?!?!?haha

That was piss-poor tackling on the part of Newman, more than Cooley breaking the tackle. There are way better examples than that play!!

This is an amazing stat...I had no idea he was that high. The most amazing thing is that almost 63% of his total receiving yards were YACs -- by comparison, Moss is just under 42%. That is crazy...

Thank god we "reached" in the 3rd round to draft him!!

06-07 season probowl

Yeah...it really was a travesty that he wasn't selected this year. Especially after seeing that stat!!!

cooley has been hard to tackle since he joined the skins. this year they loved throwing him that screen pass and letting him run over people. he had that one catch vs the 49ers that had to have been 40 yards YAC

It can only be piss-poor tackling if the player actually attempts TO tackle...lol...Newman more or less tossed his shoulder somewhere at Cooley's waist and then just rolled over onto his back. Hell, even Parcells could barely stand to look at him on the sidelines after that feeble attempt at "tackling".

You're right, there are tons of examples of Cooley being manhandled by two or three tacklers and STILL getting extra yards...

just work on holding the ball and blocking and he will be even better.

Actually I would expect the bigger guys to have a good YAC average. TE's are the ones breaking tackles, not to many WR's break tackles. WR's either catch and run or catch and get tackled immediately.

Thanks for bringing up this stat. I had no idea he was even close to the top in YAC.

As far as CapitalDefense's statement about TE's breaking tackles, this stat isn't about tackles broken, it's about YAC. Think about some differences between your typical WR and TE when they catch the ball:

WRs usually have beaten a man when they get the ball. That is to say, they have ideally gotten to a position where no defender can interfere with the catch. TEs usually get inside their man and use their body as a shield. Therefore, WRs are less likely (keep in mind, I'm not talking about specific examples here, this is probability) to even have to break a tackle. TEs are more likely to go down immediately after a catch, simply due to not getting into open space like a speedy WR can.

The fact that we didn't have a valid #2 flanker makes Cooley's numbers look even better. Way to go on the fact-finding.

i thought cooley was the most impressive ive seen in a while at his position, and was definitely screwed outta the pro bowl

cooley is such a good player and that stat helps to prove it. defenses know him as a threat. and now since we have even more threats (randel el and lloyd) defenses are gonna have a hard time stopping us.

Not to get on Brunell, but that means at least 36% of his yards were the result of Moss and Cooley making plays. Haha...

Chris Cooley is the best 3rd round pick up in history

I definitely wouldn't say that... yet... but he is definitely one of the top recent 3rd round steals.

Yea, great YAC guy. But . . . he did have a tendancy to fumble. Needs to work on that, but you know that Gibbs will get it done :D

How does this rumor continue to propagate?? What, did you watch the game at New York and the Sunday Night game against Philly, and that's IT? He fumbled 3 times, and lost one. Tendency to fumble???

Cooley is a monster...you don't get voted hardest hitter on your team as a TE if you aren't a pure beast.
