Does anybody know why we only had him play one season for us? He was a tough as nails intimidator in the secondary, much like Sean Taylor...so why didn't we keep him longer when we had him?

If I remember correctly, he was suspended for a hit late in the season(maybe last game). That suspension would have been assessed to him the following year. He may have decided to just not play at that point. I don't think he ever played again. pro-football-reference doesn't have any stats or teams for him after the 2000 season.

I do remember talk about why he stopped playing and it's relation to the suspesion and also a possible injury. Hope this helps.

The dude was a walking suspension. He lived by the helmet to helmet hit

bhayes nailed it.

Carrier was a target for refs and league officials by the time the 2000 season ended. He had a suspension hanging over his head if he came back to play in the 01 season and if I'm not mistaken, it was for a hit that wasn't particularly vicious (but he did lead with his head) and it wasn't even called a penalty in the game. Carrier's ability to play safety (specifically his aggressiveness) was being affected by the league cracking down on him and I think he just decided to hang'em up.

That plus he was a 10 or 11 year vet at the time so it's not too outlandish to have somebody retire at his age, were the reasons I've always heard as being why Carrier never played again.

i really thought it was unfair what the league did to him and chuck cecil. They really got targetted and hits that were clean were being fined like mad. just my .02

Yet John Lynch continues to get away with it.

Mark Carrier was facing a 4 game suspension. No team wanted to take him on and hold open a roster spot for a guy who was going to miss 4 games and had the possibility of a longer suspension at any time being a repeat offender. The hit that drew the suspension wasn't particularly bad but many of his hits were bad and it was just the culmination of many late hits. He was fined many times and suspended prior to coming to DC.

It was also the year in which Marty the "team" builder cleaned house and the suspension was a good enough reason to ditch him after the year . I have no idea about his personal circumstances. Interstingly Carrier was not the only of the 2000 splurge shown the door in 2001. Jeff George went (although he was kept around untill the begining of the season), Carrier and Neon Deon retired. Also swept aside was Marco Colman - one of the last DEs to put up double figgure sack in burgandy and gold replaced by Wynn, Larry Centres one of the best pass catching FBs ever, and the likes of Mike Sellers, James Thrash, ND Kalu all bit players but better than the guys he brought in Kevin Lockett anyone .

I don't know about that, Chuck Cecil was one of the most penalized safties with leading with the helmet hits. One of his most known may be the late helmet to helmet hit he put on Rod Middleton that ended up breaking Middleton's jaw

To the poster slamming Marty:

Yes, Marty made a mistake in letting Thrash, Kalu and Centers go, but he developed Pierce (fat lot of good it does us now, I know), had Arrington playing great football and in general had the team playing hard, which is something we hadn't seen since 1992. I was very upset that Snyder dumped Marty in favor of Spurrier, and the results speak for themselves.

Because he stunk.

He was little more than a headhunter at that point in his career with no cover skills. All you could really count on with him was one 15-yard penalty each game.

The reason he was becoming such a helmet to helmet guy was because that was pretty much the only way he could be effective at that point.

As for Marty clearing house, the Skins salary cap was a mess that year. His hand was kind of forced.

He was also the guy who found Lemar. He kept him around in 2001 (though not on the active squad) but signed him to the active squad before he left.

I was actually thinkin about this guy the other day. He's on the Raven's coaching staff now? What is he going to teach them, how to take someone's head off?

Mark Carrier only went for the homerun hit. He wanted to knock a wide receiver out every chance he could - and too often he missed and it resulted in a big play for the other team. He was way overrated, and is part of the reason the mainstream media thinks our front office only goes after name players. Sean Taylor is already better than Carrier ever was.

OK one time. How about all the times during his career that he has gotten away with it?

I dont recall Lynch ever hitting low.
The dude is a headhunter and I like him for it.
