View Full Version : Draft Possibility

I've been reading some of the draft stuff online and a couple of places are saying that if Mathias Kiwanuka (DE, Boston College) is available at our first pick of the draft, we should take him. SI has him listed as their 5th best DE and said he could be a steal and develop into a great pass rusher. With Daniels and Wynn both north of 30 yrs old, I think having a young stud DE to spell them would greatly improve their effectiveness. With our other needs (WLB, DB, OL depth, etc) and the signing of Andre Carter, do you guys think we should/will still take Kiwanuka if he's still on the board? I think if we do, we could have one of the best D lines in the game. :D But then again, we have other needs to be addressed too.

I just hope they take the best player available and get it over with. Anyhow, I trust the judgement of the scouting staff and coaches.

Would be nice, but I just don't see Kiwanuka being there at #53

I believe with the addition of Carter, the DE position will be addresed later.

I haven't seen or heard from any source that he might slip as far as #53. But, if he does, I doubt that we'd take him unless the LB's and CB's we like are gone.
I think he would be a nice player to develop, though. IMHO, he just needs to get stronger and the Skins can help him do that.
If either Rocky McIntosh or Thomas Howard are on the board at #53, I'd be tempted to bet the mortgage money that one of them will be the pick.

I'm not convinced Kiwanuka is going to turn into the great NFL defenseive end people expect. Speed rushers like them are very hit-or-miss, historically. I think it's a gamble because he doesn't have NFL strength.
A guy like Mario Williams is just such an impressive athlete and player that his success is entirely up to him. Kiwanuka, I think, needs to have the pieces around him to succeed. Kind of like Andre Carter: when he played on a decent defense, he looked great. But when he didn't have other players around him, he was just average. (Don'y worry, I like the signing because we have good players to surround him with :D ). But a guy like Williams can be a stud even if he's the only good player on the defense--if he puts in the effort.

I really think the guy in this draft that is going to be good is Manny Lawson.

every day i feel more and more like theyre gonna take mcintosh. no real strong feelings about him one way or the other, but whatever. i trust the staff. although if cedric griffin is available in the 3rd(which he could be) i say we trade for a pick there to get him

Kiwi would be a nice addition, but it really isn't a need right now. Daniels may be old but he can most certainly get the job done.

Vinny C did say in an interview that we are looking to get younger on the DL . . . maybe they have someone in mind.

Kiwi definitely has a lot to learn but he still has a tremendous upside. I don't think Gregg Williams and Greg Blache would allow him to be a bust.
I was more impressed though with the video of Pitt's Charles Spencer. I think he could be better than Dockery and he can play Tackle in a pinch as well as Guard. He has good feet, uses his hands well and would make a good pulling guard opposite Randy Thomas.
At this point I really wish we had an early 2nd round pick in addition to #53. There's definitely some quality in that round.

Mathias got dominated by the Brick in the Senior bowl. He may have to convert to a lber if he wants to play in the NFL. He seems a lil weak for a DE right now.

I think that we have Wynn and Evans for this year to back up our starters. I still think it is best to concentrate on a cornerback and look to free agency to address LB situation.

they should take the PBA amongst the LB, CB, DE, DT, or OL - of course, they should weight their relative need at each position vs. the potential upside of the player, but in general, that would be my philosophy - If any "top" prospect at these positions falls, have a go at it....
