To all crab cakes fan,
I have found a place that (Possibly) make the best crab cakes, ever! The name of the place is called "Timbuktu", located in Anne Arundel County.
First of all, they broiled their crab cakes and they are huge. You can have it fried if you like but the broiled ones are the best.
If you live in or near Maryland or plan on visiting the State of MD, do yourself a favor... If you are a crab cakes' fan, contact Timbuktu and get the directions to the restaurant, it's worth the visit!

Oh yeah, I tried it yesterday, 5/19/2006. I've eaten crab cakes at a number of other restaurants but none were like these I've eaten at Timbuktu.

Yes DCS, they are good. There are two other restaurants that are comparable and one is even better than Timbutku. Romano's in Glen Burnie, MD are excellent also. But, the best of the three is G&M restaurant in Linthicum Heights, MD are by far the best. As mentioned before NEVER fry your crabcakes and broil them.

gus' mariner on the va beach oceanfront makes the best. they even had them on the food network after they were picked almost unanimously by taste experts traveling the country as having the best crab cakes and best she crab soup in the country. the cakes are almost 4 inches wide, 2 inches thick, and almost 100% backfin crab meat. literally almost zero filler, great stuff. and a great deal IMO for only $7.99 for 2

I gotta agree with King on this one.....about 20 yrs ago, or so, Timbuktu was the best. Right now,(my crab cakes aside ;) )I'd go with G&M's also, they're still very good.
I can not recommend Romano's, for crab cakes anymore. I recently got stuffed oysters there, (basically 5 blue-point oysters covered with the same crab mixture used for their crabcakes and baked/broiled), and the quality isn't as good as it was around 2-3 yrs ago. They're taking shortcuts, and used too much breading. I had lumps of bread, almost as big as the lumps of crab meat. That ain't right.
A proper crab cake should be all jumbo lump, with just enough binder, (bread crumbs, egg), to hold it together. I'm intrigued by the restaurant that extreme has mentioned, (gus' mariner), on Va Beach. I don't understand how you can get 2 crab cakes, all backfin and almost zero-filler, for just $7.99. My folks live down there, I'm gonna have to go try it, on our next visit....

Timbuktu, G&M, and Hellas are all under the same ownership.
Out of the 3, Hellas is the best.

I'm jealous...very jealous. One drawback of living where I do is there is NO way to get a damn bit of decent seafood around here! I'll have to try out all these places one day.
On a side note. One of the absolute best crabcakes I've ever had was a at a place in Springfield. I can't remember the name offhand, and I didn't expect much out of it initially, but damn...were they good.

A few years back the Washington Post did a story about the search for the best crabcake in the DC Metro area. Timbuktu was very highly rated and has a very loyal following but they came in as runner-up. Stoney's in Broomes Island (Calvert County) was voted the best crabcake in the area.

Man, I was waiting for the Stoney's love. The thing is, after getting spoiled with eating a stoney's crabcake a couple times, all crabcakes at other restaurants just seem not adequate...just...inferior.
Personally, I like mine pan fried, not broiled, because I like to have a nice brown, crispy outer shell. A lot of people can't make that happen without the thing falling apart or without overcooking a side (usually to avoid having it fall apart, so they resort to the less delicate broiling procedure, which isn't as fun and doesn't give the crab cake the good crispy bite the I enjoy on the outside, with a nice firm texture in the center.
Alright...this is making me hungry.

I'm a G&M veteran, myself, and make a run up there anytime I'm in the area (Orioles game or picking up someone from BWI). I have to say, those are some mighty good crabcakes (among the best) but better ones do exist. Typically speaking, though, you have to be at a pretty high quality restaurant to beat out the ol' G&M...

I've been there. It's disgusting. First of all, their crabmeat is not cleaned well - too many shell fragments. Secondly, the place is a wreck - old furnishings, decor, dated, smelly, unkept, etc.
Do yourselves a favor, and just head over to Costco for a can of Phillips' premium crab meat.

The place is filthy, and what's worse is the fact that there are so many shell fragments in their overbreaded crab cakes. At least the Phillips stuff doesn't have any shells.

WTF??? You must be joking...or you have no clue about Crab Cakes. Phillip's doesn't even use Maryland Crabs for their canned stuff...it is out of Asia...trust me...I know Brice and Shirley Phillips.
On a serious note, if you are in Ocean City you will find a great crab cake at the Captains Galley II. It is located in West Ocean (off of RT 50 and Golf Course Road). Softball size crab cakes...BROILED! No filler, and no shells.

I recommend Jerry's seafood Crab Bomb. Technically it isn't a crabcake, but it is supposed to be very impressive and is rated very highly by several DC chef's I know who run restaurants that are listed in Washingtonian's top 100 Restaurants on a regular basis. Here is the website: http://www.jerrys-seafood.com
I live near Ashburn, so I haven't been out there and their prices are on the steep side, but it is supposed to be awesome.
Although the crab is not maryland blue crab, the crabmeat in the can at Costco for $14 following the recipe by Old Bay is not a bad substitute when you have a craving for crab cakes and you don't feel like going a long way for a quality restaurant to serve it. There are plenty of restaurants in the DC area that will charge you $20+ for dinky crabcakes that don't use MD crabmeat either.
Nothing beats the sweet yummy meat of MD crabs though.

I don't fancy myself as a crabcake (or just plain crab) guru or aficionado, but I enjoy and have eaten them enough times to appreciate the difference between what's good and something less than good. Timbuktu is ****. I'd rather eat Phillips black can crabmeat that doesn't contain shell fragments. Now maybe you enjoy picking shell pieces out of your teeth, but I'll pass.

I would have to agree with you on both accounts. My claim that Stoney's has the best crabcakes is assuming we are discussing crabcakes at a restaurant.
