woah, i right-clicked on the video itself and went to options-- appearantly youtube uses your hard drive without asking.

Well, #1, all internet communications, and in particular all streaming media, use your hard drive, at least some.
(So does ExtremeSkins, unless you've got some very unusual settings on your web browser. (And if you do, then your performance viewing the site will suffer.))
