Once in a while, I get some spare time to play at nothing at all. One of my favorite things to play at is colorizing old photos.
This is Columbia U in NYC circa 1903. It's a two photo splice, then colorized.

Trolly cars, and they just didn't have enough detail to keep in.

It's not that hard at all actually. Anybody with crayons can do it

Just some transparent layers over the black and white with different levels of opacity. It's really is like a coloring book. ;)

Not bad at all.

Here's what I think you did right:

Usually, it seems like, when I look at colorized photos, the colors are a bit too saturated, making the whole picture look a little bit "fake". You, on the other hand, didn't give in to temptation, you got the colors just strong enough.

Here's what I think you did wrong:

Uh, nothing, actually, it's perfect. Why did I write this part? :)

Oh, and HapHaszard, too funny.

A good way to do a flesh tone is open a recent color pic and take your extracting dropper and pull the color from them, bring it to you color pallet and BAM!!! you got yourself a base skin tone that you can make llighter or darker.

Great pics!!! I am gonna have to scan a pic of my grandfather playing football so you can do it fo me (I don't have the patience!!)

That works well if your dealing with a white background, or a solid layer over the pic. The over layers I do are normally between 8 and 25 % solid, so when you lay on a color, it's nowhere near what it looks like on the pallet. If you just color at 100%, you lose all the detail.

I'll be glad to give the pic of your grandfather a shot.

I need to try to get some practice time in with all of these photo manipulator programs.

In everyone's experience, what the easiest and best program to use ?

I got something called digital image standard on my computer. Which I have no clue how to utilize.

Just start to play with a pic on it. As long as it allows layers, and you can change the opacity of the layers, you good to go. Most graphics programs have a "read me" or "help" section.

I use an old version of Adobe Photo delux............

I believe Buxton & Parker was an old law firm on Hunnington Ave., in probably what is now called East End. Buxton was a very prominent name/family.

Pete...I got some old b&w photos from the area. One is of a skipjack that
my great grandfather owned. Another is my mom's father in front of first
car he ever bought (a 1917 Ford). Photo was taken in 1919.

If you want any old pics let me know.

Good work Pete. When I was teaching Photoshop that was one of the projects that I had my students do. Take a B&W photograph, and colorize it. Do you use the blend modes at all? Or are you just playing around with opacity? Because if you want more natural skin tones blend modes work well. Blend modes work very well in general, for skin tones and otherwise. Off the top of my head, Overlay is one that works well. But over all good stuff.
