Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country.

Remembering the reason.

Never forget those who have given the ultimate for the service of this great nation, nor should we forget those who are still with us that have served, or currently serving.

God Bless you all.

It's difficult to quantify the debt of gratitude we owe to our fallen, but I think it not an exaggeration to say that I owe them my life in every sense of the word.

When I wonder whether we deserve it, I am answered by knowing...they thought we did and paid the ultimate price for believing that. Let's all strive to act in a way that would have made them as proud of us as we are of them.

I must be a little wierd (OK, a lot wierd). But to me, the thanks go to everybody who served. Whether they died or not, whether they even saw combat or not, the sacrifice is in raising your right hand and volunteering.

The folks who didn't die, even the folks who never saw combat, still volunteered to take the same risks, anyway.

Here's to the folks who volunteered, regardless which job Uncle Sam chose to stick you in. You've all served.

We're all appreciative of those who served and those who are still serving. However, Memorial Day was set aside specifically for the remembrance of the fallen, and I don't think anyone's in the wrong to single them out today.

It is good to remember the actual meaning. Memorial day is more than getting drunk and eating steak.

While you have a point, there's no harm in honoring those who didn't fall in combat, but have stepped up to say, I will if need be.

Also, I also honor all the fallen Firefighters, and Police. They also protect our country, just from different threats..........

Veterans Day is to honor those that have served. Memorial Day is to honor those that have paid the Ultimate Sacrifice for our country. But there is nothing wrong in remembering ALL veterans on Memorial Day.

Rolling Thunder 19 went off Sunday afternoon- some 300,000 bikers and hundreds of thousands of others watching. That was awesome. Then yesterday the Memorial Day parade was one of the best I have seen in DC in 10 years...
