I just found out about an hour ago, that my brother's, girlfriend's, 11 year old son was killed in an ATV accident yesterday. My brother and his girlfriend were enjoying the holiday weekend togehter in Atlantic City, and she had left her two boys with her parents in West Virginia.
Yesterday, the boy was riding the ATV, and had driven it down into a gully or ditch, and attempted to get back out. The ATV rolled over on top of him, killing him instantly. EMT's tried to revive him, but he was gone. Needless to say, everybody is very upset right now. The boy, and his little brother were just singing happy birthday to me last Sunday, and now he's gone.
It's hard to understand why tragedies like this happen. I'm at a loss for words. :(

Its hard to hear about this when it happens to anybody. Even harder when the tragedy occurs to an eleven year old. My thoughts, prayers and sympathy to you and all affected.

I've talked to my dad again since I first started this thread. Apparently, now they are saying that the ATV was driven by the boy's grandfather, and that he attempted to climb back out of the ditch at too steep an incline, and that caused the ATV to tip over. He was driving not the 11 year old.

This is not the time to go into how this happens, no matter who was driving.

Actually, it is my brother's girlfriend. They have only been dating for about 3 months, but we had come to know her two sons quite well. The boys were from a previous marriage, that had ended last year.
All thoughts and prayers are appreciated guys. I'm not entirely sure what exactly happened out there yet. My brother, his girlfriend, and her other 8 year old son are enroute back to Maryland now, and should be back sometime late tonight. My dad tells me that a local funeral home will be going out to pick up the body tommorow, and the funeral will be this weekend sometime.

Sorry for your loss, man. I am guessing that the grandfather survived? I feel terrible for him; he must feel extremely guilty. My thoughts are with you and yours.

Yeah, apparently he had only superficial wounds. What killed the child was the ATV rolling over on top of him. I can't imagine what he must be feeling right now.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences to all involved. I have an 11 yr old son and can't imagine the pain that the family must be feeling.
My 11yr old son has talked about getting an ATV. I told him that whenever I see the word "ATV" in a sentence that it is usually followed by "accident" and that I would never allow him to have such a vehicle. I imagine that when operated properly that they can be somewhat safe but my particular feelings are such that I just don't see where the enjoyment can outweigh the risk involved based on the number of these types of accidents I see reported or have firsthand knowledge of. A client of mine lost a friend when he let another friend use his ATV and one went airborne and crashed into the other.
Just a very, very sad story. As others have stated I really feel bad for Grandfather as well.
