Cowboys rookie Whitley tears ACL, will miss season

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

For former Texas Tech offensive lineman E.J. Whitley, a seventh-round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys, his NFL career will begin the same way his college tenure did.

With a redshirt season.

The versatile Whitley, the last of Dallas' eight selections in the draft last month and the 224th player chosen overall, underwent Tuesday surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He will miss his entire rookie campaign.

The injury occurred during a rookie minicamp earlier this month.

Coming out of the pass-happy Texas Tech program, Whitley was regarded by scouts as an accomplished pass protector but, even at 6-feet-5 and 309 pounds, talent evaluators felt he needed to add strength and to become a better run-blocker. Although he played principally at tackle in college, the Cowboys projected him to guard, where they were seeking to upgrade their depth.

Dallas released perennial Pro Bowl left guard Larry Allen in the offseason and signed four-year veteran Kyle Kosier as an unrestricted free agent to replace him. The starting right guard is former Pro Bowl blocker Marco Rivera, but there is little depth after those two.

They better pray for no more O-line injuries or they could be in deep, dark serious

Not that a low round draft pick really affects them very much, but the injuries are already starting.

Ouch, hate to see anyone get injured especially this early.

That's tough and all but the only thing that team has to look forward to this year might be alot of misery. Bledsoe is going to vogue on T.O.'s last nerve!

This guy would have had to played lights out to make the roster, and would fairly fortunate for the practice squad. While you never like to see a guy injured, he does get an extra year working out and rehabing with them team.

Don't like to hear about anyone getting hurt ever, but especially would prefer not to hear about a Cowboy player in the Stadium forum!!

I'm moving this to Around the NFL section as it's about the Cowboys. It's good stuff to know, but don't celebrate too loudly. Injuries happen to every team.

Since this was the first post on this topic, I thought I'd bump it.

Yeah, for real....that sucks. Especially being a 7th-rounder...you're bottom of the barrell already.

Sucks to be him, he was already looking at an uphill battle anyway.

I wonder how that Cowgirl fan that wished that ST would be carried off the field feels now, you see what kind of OMEN you committed by saying something mean and cruel, now you have a very serious injury to a player. Us REDSKINS fans are classy, we are very simpathetic towards all players and would not wish injury on any player like that. I wish Whitley a speedy recovery, and get well soon.

Sad that any player is injured and his career may be cut short, stalled or hindered by a injury.

I guess the only good news for the Cowboys was that it was a low round pick who on average don't make the squad anyway.

I'd prefer if there were no injuries in football...but that is a fantasy.

I hope the pukes let him rehab and give him a second chance.

Can't you stash players you don't want to cut on IR anyway?

No, that's a sleazy trick that the Redskins used to do when they would stash guys like Humphries and Rypien on IR when they really weren't hurt.

Hey, Rypien had a blood disorder...someone told him he had it...who was he to say he didn't.

Not so sure he wouldve made the team anyway.

His versatility was a plus, but 7th rounders who were not projected to be drafted face an uphill battle from the get go.

Terrible way to start a career though.

Hoping he's ready for 2007.

You're disillusioned if you think the Redskins are the only team that did/does that. Bellichek does it in New England, and we all know who he was the protege of...:)

A guy like this may have just seen his slim chances of playing in the NFL slip away. It's not like he was a 1st rounder...

I'm not crying over that one. Tuna may have to play, if they lose more lineman.
