I'm a little disappointed in this list. I don't think Doak has squat on Lane. Maybe Death Valley.

A guy (UVA student - yikes) had it just about right on that page. VT is probably #1 for night games.
Can't sleep on Clemson. Criminy.
Maryland's stadium is definitely in the bottom third of the conference. :(
Luckily expansion is on the way, but it remains to be seen just how much the final plan will atone for the architectural sins of years past.

I have been to games at NC State, UNC, and GT. I have been more impressed with NC State than UNC. They know how to put on a production at that Stadium. The crowd can really get into games. UNC definitely had more of the whine and cheese feel. But that just plays right into the stereotype. So I guess there is no suprise there. When I went to GT, it was a Saturday night game against FL St. It was in 98 and Joe Hamilton was the QB. That was definitely the best atmosphere I have ever been in for college football. Even though FL ST ran away with the game, it was still fun.

I've been to a few of these places...when your decibel level is louder than a 747 taking off, thats impressive. what is the ranking based on though? is it toughest places to win, loudest stadiums, or overall taking into account beauty, fans, noise, program, etcc?
Lane is freakin loud. If this list is off of fan noise. I would put Clemson as 1 with VT just behind (cant beat a 747 dbs). UVAs fans are pretty sad. I was at the game when they beat Tech in 2003 and just disgusted in their fans attitudes. One UVA fan definitely, for no reason, poured a beer all over a VT fan in front of him on the hill. And proceeded to follow VT fans around banging his thunder sticks behind their head.
Some Maryland fans can be obnoxious as well. I went to the BC at Maryland game last year and one maryland fan stood in the bc visiting fans sections cursing at everyone and screaming that bc sucks even while bc was stomping them. he never shut up or walked away after maryland was losing bad so i will give him credit for that. Overall though not too loud of a stadium.
i dont think the one maryland fan paints a picture of the fan base at all. unfortunately every school has fans like that. as for uva fan base, well, i dont care comment on them

Byrd would benefit tremendously from a symmetrical layout, with an upper deck on both sides instead of just the one side. No need to duplicate the existing deck -- the tower and press box could be replaced with a lower, longer version containing boxes, capped by the new deck. It would make for a very nice facility.
It looks like the current expansion plan won't do that, although it will add some seats and make other key improvements. Only time will tell whether the existing plan is a developmental dead end that makes subsequent expansion efforts even more difficult.
So the nation's premier college basketball arena will have to wait a while to get a similarly peerless football facility up the hill. One at a time...

Why build all new seats at Byrd when they're all going to be empty in the fourth quarter anyway?

Ah yes, that saw again.
It would be more at home in The Antagonism Thread. But as long as we're on your short detour, I suppose I'll go through the well-worn motions of asking:
- Why does WVU Coliseum have any seats at all?
Then I'll faux-seriously answer my own question by noting that the visiting fans do have to sit somewhere.
It's a strange discussion to rehash, as both Maryland Football (again) and WVU basketball (for the first time ever) are anticipating sellout seasons this year. So if anything, both schools and their supporters should be happy to have their own fanbases in order.
But, ticket sales aside, the questions remain, firmly based upon historical precedent:
- Will Maryland fans stay for the last 1/8 of one particular football game?
- Will WVU fans even show up in the first place throughout the entire basketball season?
And we've covered those in excrutiating, well documented detail elsewhere.
As this is a thread about ACC football stadiums, let's get back to that far more interesting action.
Lane vs. Doak. Go.
