He deserves it. It actually helps us with negotiations for Sean Taylor. Sean Taylor is probably the 3rd or 4th best safety in the NFL, thus Snyder should have a convenient way to determine exactly what that amount is, based on Reed's contract. We should then be able to get Sean the extension he deserves at a competitive price. This is the best news we could from Ravenland.

Taylor has 6 more years left. Can we give taylor a 10 year ext?

It's very rare to see more than a 6 year deal for a FA. If the Skins could sign ST for 6 more years, that would be awesome. Congrates to Reed, he's a great player.

Taylor is another few years away from getting his contract torn up.

He hasn't had that "signature" season yet. Agents like to strike while the iron is hot. While it is warm, it sure aint white hot. Plus, he can't seem to string together more than a few months without his name popping up in the news for something other than football. That's not the way to maximize your coin. He needs to show that the past was truly the past and that he's grown up.

I agree, he needs at least one or two seasons where he stays out of trouble and continues to excel before he can start asking for more coin. He will then be the highest paid safety in the NFL.

also, he knows once he reaches certain incentives, his paycheck jumps up. He has 5 more years on his contract I believe. I can see something being done with 1-2 years left, unless Drew Rosenhaus pushes for it earlier. It may actually help us if we redo his contract, as some of those incentives can be killer (like 9 million if he makes the pro-bowl or something?)

Though I understand the sentiment that Taylor is just a couple years-in on his current deal, and has many left on the table, you guys don't really think he doesn't want a new deal already do you? Let us not forget the whole hiring/firing fiasco with his agent to start with. One of Sean's first public comments was the fact that he was unhappy with the deal his agent struck for him, thus he fired him and resigned the Shark (How soon we forget). People are talking about years left on Sean’s contract like that really matters. Everyone knows the only relevant part of an NFL contract is the signing bonus. NFL contracts never reach the end without restructures or cuts so lets stop the "We still have him under contract for X-years talk."

Sean is not a dummy, neither is Snyder. The money is no object for Snyder so the best time to determine Sean's value would be right now while the best at his position is being shown the money. Sean is two or three players behind Reed so it makes sense to determine that value now. If you let any of the two players ahead of Sean sign a deal, the team may be in for a mammoth payday when it comes to Sean. Just say for instance Pittsburg redid Troy Promamalou’s contract and paid him slightly more than Reed, when factoring in easily achieved incentives. That would be just the leverage Rosenhaus needs to hold Snyder over the fire with Taylor. Distractions, holdouts etc. don't sit well with Gibbs so you would see a similar exit to the one Lavar or "The Toe" received. In both cases disgruntled stars were shown the door in the interest of preserving the team concept. Do you think Sean doesn't know he would receive top billing from 90% of the league if here were made available today?

I have a feeling that if Sean has great year on the field and an absolutely quiet, only hear about him at charity events type of year off the field, then he will be given a new contract - maybe this time next year.

Me too Jimster. I couldn't understand the logic of the posters that were saying "We have Sean under contract for X-many years." I wasn't, by any means saying I thought he's going to get his new deal today, but it makes sense to talk to him during this Seasonn to let him know the team is open to talks on a new deal soon to follow. That would be great timing, value wise, and a great way to send the message to him that a new contract is coming his way provided he can stay on the field and free from jail or other negative incidents.

He should be, not Adam Archuleta!!!
Also, I agree with the other posters who say that Taylor's contract won't reach anywhere near the end before he wants more money. He wanted more before last year. The only reason he didn't go after it was because he got into trouble.
I'm sure the Skins were glad this happened in a way, because it pushed back any of the problems that were going to be associated with contracts and holding out, but rest assured if he continues to play well he too will get one of those back loaded contracts that will have him making 14 million bucks in the 3rd or 4th year.
